So it appears Rooney wud be the consensus choice to start tonight, which I agree tbh. He may be rusty but he is the most talented English player since gazza, so has to play.
How will Roy fit him in?
Personally I hope Roy goes out to win and not stay tight for a draw!!!
So for me
Hart
Glen Terry. Lescot. Cole
Walcott stevie Parker ox
Rooney
Wellbeck

TOOR, whilst I agree he's leagues ahead of his peers, do you think it's right he's being heralded by the media as some sort of saviour? At the risk of coming over all Pythonesque, he's not the messiah.
Yes, he should definitely play. But I completely disagree with all these montages. I mean, come on, that thing on the Beeb, with shots of him in his England shirt, the rising anthemic chords hammering around him (someone in the Beeb knows their obscure early 90's grunge bands, so some respect there), it's all pumping the expectation levels up to the stars. That's a lot of pressure, even for a seasoned pro.
----------------------
My point exaclty
I though we lacked massively on the wings the other night and for me I agree with KFF that neither young or milner should start.

The media are doing exactly what they did before the l;ast WC. They are bigging him up as much as they can so he has further to fall
----------------------------------
What are you on about? They're bigging him up because they love him, he is England's saviour.
----------------------------------
TOOR you know what the press are like.
If they see him as England's saviour, they would not have beaten him to death after the last WC.
If Wayne has a bad game, which is entirley possible, and we lose, what do you think the headlines will be tomorrow?
--------------------------------------------
That's what happens to the saviour when they play badly. It happened to Gerrard, to Messi, to Ronaldo and many more. The expectations are in overdrive and this will be even more so now that he's missed the first two games.
I think ive made my hatred for the media known for a long time and although they do have a love in with rooney I can see the point of what is being said...
as soon as he was banned i knew the papers would be talking like this...though it doesnt help when Roy comes out and wants a 'pele' style influence from him..
not a big ask then!!!!
I have to ask if liverpool fans if they cannot see gerrard struggling to close down players? How hard it is for him to get into space? His lethargy in general is quite clear. He is not a 4-4-2 midfielder anymore and while hodgsons compactness will help defensively a team with a decent midfield will take advantage of it.
He still has his flashes of brilliance and that works in the highlight age of football, but unless a team is built around his strengths and weaknesses, he is a liability.
Insane campaign in Ukraine puts an end to Wayne's reign.
"If Wayne has a bad game, which is entirley possible, and we lose, what do you think the headlines will be tomorrow?"
I guess it depends on how badly he plays, I guess.
"Roo blew it for us, Wayne!"
"Done by the Roo-kraine". Roo-k-Wayne? Could work...
Rooney uses his brain in the rain to contain Ukraine.
he is a liability....
is a rediculous statement.
I can see that he tires towards the end of a game but so do a lot of players out there. I think parker does more, i think Terry does too.. I even thought welbeck did in the first game as he put a shift in... thats what subs are for and if we are leading i would have no problem with stevie coming off... but a liability is madness. he has led very well as a capt and set up two goals... we have only scored four.... !!!!!!!
So it appears Rooney wud be the consensus choice to start tonight, which I agree tbh. He may be rusty but he is the most talented English player since gazza, so has to play.
--------------------------------------------------------------
It´s exactly this kind of mentality that holds England back.
Rooney does not deserve to start. Bring him on as a sub during the game but he does not warrant a place in the starting line-up.
By giving a start to Rooney we are condoning his behaviour that led to his ban as well as saying that his awful showing in the World Cup 2010 was acceptable.
Rooney does not deserve to start. He has to prove himself worthy to deserve a place in the starting line-up.
A segue: do we go for a dominant win and top the group so as to avoid Spain?
Personally, i think it doesnt matter but we perhaps have more of a chance against the Italians.
And having watched Spain being frustrated by Croatia for a large part and Italy, i think if we face them, with a compact defence, nick one on the counter - we can hold out for a win.
Remember, we beat them last year? I would be more wary facing Germany or even Portugal than Spain.

I just ignore these idiots now. No point arguing about it, I've spent years arguing about Gerrard's England performances. Club bias clouds judgement for some people.
Scouse heart - Yes Carroll did score a wonderful header which i've said a few times now.
But that doesn't mean he should start ahead of Englands best player.
TOOR
Fair point... i can almost deal with the blindness of teir Carroll guff as they have spent all season revelling in it... but Gerrard <doh.
The media was bound to exaggerate Rooney coming back. I remember in the last World Cup, Barry was coming back from injury for the Germany game, and The BBC made it look like he was our saviour...and we still got stuffed!
Rooney is BY FAR our best player. Him and Welbeck have being playing well together all season, so for me, it's Carroll who misses out.
I would also start Theo over Milner.
Other than that, the team should pick itself.

No offense mate but you have no clue about his mindset, how he's performimg in training, what his team mates think.
You know as much as we do. Nothing.
Saying he doesn't deserve to start is wrong. He made a silly mistake and he is now back, We need our best player on the field. Not sat on his backside
Sorry

Enough said.
Why would Rooney be rusty ? the season only finished a few weeks ago, he's been in full training hasn't been injured.
He will be fresh and ready to go.
VCD
I didnt say he should start...where did i say that????
I just said you were a bit hypocritical to have a go... and im right... as your article last week was based on your club support.. you had decided he wasnt good enough before the lad had kicked a ball in the tournament..
i gave an extra cheer when that fantastic header went in just for you...
Nobody said anything bad about Gerrard just that a better opposition midfield would take advantage of his weaknesses! Whatever there are.
I'll put in into a context that both Utd & Liverpool fans might get: To suggest not starting Rooney is like suggesting that Gerrard should be dropped!!!
Core of England team : Hart - Terry - Stevie Me - Rooney
Its not exactly rocket science anytime any of those 4 players are fit, they start, simples
