There are other reasons fees stay undisclosed than to screw over supporters. Say we actually try to buy a player this summer (I know it's a stretch, but it might happen(it wont happen)), we don't want the club we are negotiating with to know that we have 300 grand in the bank when we only want to pay tuppence ha'penny.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00t3qjx/Colin_Bloomfield_Industrial_action_by_NHS_doctors_affects_Royal_Derby_Hospital/ interview with Maguire, 2 hours 9 mins in
When a club is buying and selling players, in whatever degree, at whatever level, there is always going to be a certain amount of risk involved - whether they will gel with the team, personality, susceptibility to injuries, taking on board the manager's philosophy, etc. I believe the risks under Clough's stewardship are minimal compared to the devil-may-care-spend-and-be-damned attitude of Messrs. Jewell and Davies. Not every arrow hits the target. We move on.
We'll never know about that particular arrow
Until he scores against us
TSAR - if we sold every player for less than we paid for him, we would go bust very quickly.
The art is to balance it out. Say you buy 3 players for £500k each. One (lets call him McGuire) you sell for nothing, so you've lost £500k. The second, who might be a centre half, you keep for a bit then sell for a £1m profit, so wiping out loss on the first player and also paying for the 3rd player - who might be a scottish midfielder who stays in the team for many years to come and has now effectively cost you nothing.
Simples!
And who might be sold to Celtic
You're analogy would fairly looks pants if that happened.
TSAR... While I'm not exactly jumping for joy when we sell players at a loss, I can see the common sense in it.
Let me ask you a counter-question:
Where's the common sense in spending the next two years paying wages to a bloke you're not going to play, and then letting him go on a free when his contract expires?
We've all got to realise that DCFC have very little leverage in circumstances like Maguire's.
When we paid approx £400k for him he was untried at this level. Now he's a failure at this level - for this club at least.
That's obviously going to put his transfer fee down isn't it? IMO its pretty hard for Derby to argue how much his game has developed in the last 12 months so he's now worth more.
It was a gamble in the bargain basement of the transfer market. It didn't come off. Lets cut our losses and move on, and be thankful the other gamble paid off handsomely.
If things were as bad as the more pessemistic of us think, we'd be here complaining that Bryson was being sold for a profit, not Maguire for a loss!
Just been told he went for 250k
"Now he's a failure at this level - for this club at least."
His goals-per-minutes-played ratio would stand comparison with most in this league and I'm including his 3 in 11 for Pompey there too.. on that spell alone, which some on here have dismissed as paltry, he'd have been in line for 12 or 13 over the season.
How did our highest scorers get on last year...?
Well Tyson, the clue is in my name.
Igor - not really! Bryson would only be sold at a very considerable profit. The issue TSAR raised was why we sell all our players at a loss - which we clearly don't.
In fairness peeder we have a history of letting plenty go on the cheap, I think a little frustration is creeping into a few as this time last year we were the most active in the market and just feels a bit stale and stagnent at the Mo, hopefully pick up july.
Can somebody tell me how many players in the last three to four years have Derby County made a profit on and how many have we lost money on.
tsar
thats a bit unfair on gse as the likes of clod (£3m+) wernt bought on their watch and they ended up with him (and the rest of the dross BD bought).
TSAR...
I said...
"Why do you think that Clough should reveal the fee if it's not club policy to do so? Why do you even think that Clough was directly involved in the negotiation?"
You interpreted that as...
"Nigel Clough did not want to get rid of Chris Maguire then!!! "
Must be something wrong with your English:Sethefrikan Dictionary.
just listened to that interview and quite frankly its about as one sided as is possible.
if anyone is daft enough to form an opinion based solely on that then gawd 'elp them.......
Maguire quote:
"I asked Nigel Clough what the problem was and I don't think he liked it."
Thankyou Sherlock.

According to DET he was sold for are a figure 'in the region of 250k'.
Bet Wednesday sell him for a lot more when the time comes.
Old One-eye......sorry I forgot, it's that hearing problem of yours just playing you up again.
I'm sorry but letting Maguire go is a big mistake by all at Derby County. The joint top scorer wants to leave because of family reasons & there is no replacement on the horizon apart from a couple of teenagers. Shortsightedness comes to mind!
Hes probably been sold for what we paid for him. Aberdeen were to get "up to" £470,000 with the add-ons kicking in. Derby probably have add-ons in there too...but i dont see why the big reaction about Chris Maguire. I saw him play 3 times...1st time he was average at best..2nd time ok...3rd time absolutely dreadful. Chris Maguire signs for Sheff Weds...so what?...we have a 16 year old better than him...sorry not 16 yet...we have a 15 year old better than him
Saw him once Backo. I was impressed in what I saw (I know it's hard to judge on one performance).
Can a teenager of his age cope with a full championship season? I very much doubt it.
I dont think for 1 minute Jorvik that Bennett will play a full season but i think he will play more than he did last season. I would see Bennett being ahead of Maguire solely on ability. But i expect a striker in anyway.
Backo, you expect a striker in?? Don't forget, we are losing Steve Davies aswell, and it's 99.9% he is joining Ipswich Town, so we need at least 2 strikers in.
