Blame the media for drooling over Rooney

Greg - again I will say that if you used match sharpness as an excuse then even that is feeble.
There was no reason for him to be unfit. If arguments are to be followed he should have been rested and full of energy

Nobody is saying he should be maradona (in fact people are saying he ISNT WC), but to run over the ball, constantly give ut away and miss from 4 yards out is criminal for someone who you are arguing is our best player. Yes it happens to all players now and again but with roo its been consistent

Look at the misses for UTD this season

URM - he wasnt injured.

--------------
I didn;t say he was

I said his fitness was clearly nowhere it needed to be to cope with the heat at least. The guy was visibly sweating a couple of minutes into games

That run he made where he simply couldn;t catch the ball. Someone said it looked like he was running through treacle and I agree. Go check his run from his own box v Arsenal season before last particularly the last 20 yards of it

That's a fit Wayne Rooney.

Ronaldo or messi wouldn't har hit the first man at the near post and would have actually found a team mate when a break was on in the opponents box.

I reckon the babe count has been excellent this tournament myself

He's a better goalscorer now. He was a far better player around 2004; faster, better touch and control, better mentally and far more confident in his own ability and technique.

URM - thats what some are saying. he was still training

as for that run v arsenal that was the season before last

go back another season and i would not be saying what I am now

If that is the measurment the rooney hasnt been fit all season

I tried playing football yesterday in 22 degree heat was it? I was knackered after 30 minutes and i play 3-4 times a week and im only 26 and consider myself to be fit.

Rooney hasnt played a game in 40 days, and was playing in 30+ heat literally chasing shadows for 120 minutes.

He misplaced a few passes, but no more than anybody else, its extremely hard to perform properly when you are fatigued.

When you watch United, he drops into midfield and has Welbeck, Nani/Valencia, Young, Scholes and Carrick all to give the ball to, make space/runs whatever..

For england he had Welbeck and Walcott for a few minutes, as I said Rooney is a team player and without a team he will never succeed

Salford Red - I dont hate Rooney - I just get tired of the excuses trotted out for him after every tournament.

If we're gna castigate Lampard, Gerrard for not turning up for England for a hell of a long time then we have to treat Rooney the same. There's never any excuses given to excuse Lampard's form in international tournaments or Gerrard's but there always is with Rooney. How about this. Maybe he's just not good enough at international level.

International tournaments only last for 6/7 games. If you're take 6/7 games to get your first touch right then you might as well go home.

Macca - You're right that he has always had issues when it comes to tournaments but Ive been saying this all season that Rooney's overall performance gets papered over because he scores the goals. The last performance from Rooney which I thought he ran the whole show from start to finish was the 3-3 draw against us at Stamford Bridge. This was back in Feb.

I dont think he is consistent at all for you, whichever Utd fan said it earlier on in the thread. He goes through some good patches then some very bad patches then some good ones again. Its like that every year.

Greg - sorry mate but thats just ridiculous and you are applying silly analogies now

Rooney was given time off and then returned to full training with all the nutritionists/physios etc etc to get him up to speed. Its a bit different to what you get

As fo what you say re misplaced passes, well that his been rooney all season for UTD

and IF rooneys job was to mark Pirlo, he isnt a team player

Every team needs a scape goat; Rooney, you're it.

Doesn't matter that our forwards got zero support from midfield, its all Rooney's fault.

I am just saying Rooney needs good players around him to get the best out of him that's why i don't think he could ever play well for England unless we get a midfield who can control a game.

You say he had all these nutritionists etc but he looked a bit chubby didn't he? add to that playing in ridiculous heats.
I was tired yesterday as I've been drinking a lot over the Euros and got a bit of a beer belly

If anything Rooney should be thanked. By kicking out at that player and getting himself banned, England ended up looking better without him than with him.

MrC

Goals don't paper over cracks for me. If he played as a number 9 and scored the same amount last season. He would be getting hailed for it

Truth is, he's a number 10 and still manages it.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on Rooney and mine is that the guy is just brilliant and United would be far weaker without him

his first touch can be sloppy at times but his overall game more than makes up for it for me.

Some may say he was poor last season.

Well, I hope he's as poor again and bangs in another 35 goals for us playing as a second striker

Chill out lads I don't see anyone scape-goating him

I'll always be a fan of Rooney but if people have a problem with him it's because his best tournament was his first and since then we've been wondering why he cant reproduce it

posted on 26/6/12

Front two were isolated with the Hodgeson set-up....it just didn`t work. Although England held Italy off, you gotta score goals to win. Eh Woy? !!!!
