I was on about the stiffs know as the BBC mods!

Although reading my post it does sound as though the old place was very...... promiscuous (sp?)

On a serious note, good for finding this out. Could have easily damaged the reputation of the site.

Also admin1 the user could be one of those that sent the DDOS attack. Watch the space...

Admin1.

OK. I am back online with a nice clean desktop! Here goes my defence!

1. A few hours ago a shiny new user pops onto our site and proclaims on the Arsenal and Manchester United boards to have nearly completed an anonymous proxy application that will allow you to surf JA606 from your work.....Hmm.
2. I assume this is a retuning banned user hell bent on causing trouble. So check the IP address it's Wanadoo France residential broadband and there is no record of it in our system. Now i'm suspicious
3. Having taken the time to ban over 5000+ proxies from our site, I ban the articles but download the file for an investigation.
4. As the poster states, I upload to virus total and sure enough it comes back clean! I then scan it with Avast AV. Clean too! Malware Bytes Scan also clean.
5. So it probably is indeed a proxy app? I closed all JA606 browser windows and email etc etc and decide to run the program. Thinking I will log the proxy addresses and put a stop to it! But nothing happens!
6. I decide to open the .exe in a HEX editor and was impressed to see that it was indeed a virus which dynamically built itself using the .NET runtime.
7. So not happy using was now a tarnished Windows install, I have after several hours restored my PC to factory condition!
8. Thankfully Admin2 approached the incident with the utmost tact to save me any embarrassment on here

Admin 1

Did that actually mean something, or did you just type a load of words randomly

I hate viruses!!

I learnt the hard way last year never click anything that says your computer is infected with a virus and you need to scan it immediately - which I did two work computers later I'm a bit more careful about what I click on

The boyfriend says it's nice that I'm so trusting. I'm sure our IT guy would beg to differ

Have to agree. The pile of po rn that loaded onto my works laptop last year when I was told to "Scan for Viruses"

The stuff that came up was mental. The worst bit though was my boss thought it was really funny and merely wanted to view said po rn, whereas the FD went mental and said I was "AT IT" when I point out to him I was useless at IT he didn't see the funny side but lucky for me my boss is the MD and he thought it was all very funny

Also I was advised that if you do get a random pop-up telling you your computer is infected, the best thing to do is don't click anything. Switch off the wi-fi/pull out the internet hard line straight away and completely shut down. Apparently even if you click cancel on these things or the red X in the corner, it can still install a virus

Yeah same with my computer. Soo embarrassing!! The worst part was our IT guy was working remotely to fix it so I still had the screen on while he was busy on my computer and all sorts of things kept popping up! I had to turn off my screen and leave him to it! Luckily we have so many empty desks dotted around the office I could still carry on with work (*cough606cough* elsewhere.

The last virus I had (the one that completely killed my last work computer) did this really annoying thing where it would re-direct all of my google searches to random fake websites that were littered with even more viruses.

These days if anything pops up or looks out of whack I just re-start straight away. 18 months without incident so far

The virus you're on about is a Russian package that is commonly purchased at there markets for about $50. It will install on your computer regardless of what you do in a split second. I've had it many times but luckily I back up my hard disk regularly and then restore from that.

However, I got so fed up with it I did some investigation, I work in IT by the way (software support) and found that if you purchase Malwarebytes Pro and use a decent AV program (AVG free will do) then keep both up-to-date. Then these together block the attempts to infect your computer.

Hope this helps

Can't you post this advice to every teams board?

Seems a bit preferrential at present.

It's not too much of a problem if I ever need to restore my pc because everything I save usually goes on USB sticks or portable hard drives so it's fairly easy to restore it. Especially when I can get the IT guy at work or my sisters IT whizz boyfriend to do it for me in exchange for beers

------------

I've got Malwarebytes on my work computer now. We also use Symantec Endpoint Protection which I'm told is pretty good and I use google chrome for going on the internet which is usually pretty good at detecting if a site might be harmful and stopping my browser. I'm well switched on now

I know, but how long does it take you and it always seems to happen at the wrong moment. That's why I had to find a solution to the issue that killed the virus at source.
