Serious question here chaps.

Why do these people send out stuff they know can nause up your computer, if it is purely for ha-ha's they should be given a good kicking followed by a lengthy jail term...........followed by another good kicking followed by .....yep, you've got it, another good kicking

I believe that Virus protection companies release virus' into the web, so as there is a greater need for their product. Also people get paid for every advert that is accidentally opened. At least that is my theory.

Also - Last!

Someone told me it is possible to develop a firewall that will be totally impenetrable, but like the ever lasting lightbulb, what would be the point of that, comercial suicide

It's called the off-button. Unless you're in a closed network without access to the outside (cyber) world there will always be threats.

Most viruses are nothing more that technological graffiti anyway. It's when you get into the realm of malware, keyloggers etc you can really be in trouble.

Or you could just use Linux. I don't even have anti-virus software on my laptop.

Please expand on this "inky", I would like to know more about the machinations of computers and the devilish world they inhabit.

When you say really be in trouble, what do you mean

TOOR

How do you use linus, I have just bought a lap-top, and want to be able to use the internet in a secure fashion

1. Replace the MS OS with Linux.

2. Dual boot MS / Linux machine.

3. Install a Linux virtual machine (VM) on your PC.
Only access the Internet via that.

I installed Ubuntu, alongside Windows. I only kept Windows due to needing it for one program that Wine doesn't support. When it does support it, I'll get rid of Windows.

Just type 'Ubuntu download' into Google. Download it. It will create a partition for Ubuntu, so as you can choose which partition to boot from, Windows or Ubuntu.

Remember you are talking to non-Linux bods too.

Does the Ubuntu download install a GRUB shell etc, so the PC user can have N seconds to decide what OS to boot up with, when the PC is switched on ??

posted on 11/10/11

You get 30 seconds after POST to decide whether to boot to Windows or Ubuntu.

If GRUB, depends on the config files.
My dual OS machine only gives me 3 seconds for the first selection (must change that one day ) .
