I still think that it was a massive mistake letting that breakaway develop. Someone had to take initiative.
Team GB allowed themselves to fall in with the peloton. It was poor race tactics.
AFL - Completely disagree.
Other countries should have helped GB. Denmark and Germany in particular. Both of them have two of the best sprinters in the world in Peter Sagan and Andre Greipel. In reality they both had no other real chance of winning a medal in the race. Therefore to give their main hopes a chance of winning the race they should have worked together with GB to haul back the breakaway. If they did so the both teams would have caught the breakaway and both Britain and Germany would almost certainly have had someone in the medals. Instead they waited hoping GB would do all the work for them and end up empty handed. That's why Cav said that other countries seem happy to not medal just to stop GB. As otherwise Germany would have put in a shift.
Secondly it is easy to say they shouldn't have let the breakaway develop. But 9/10 in a race like that the breakaway gets caught and the sprinters take the spoils. It is about judging which breaks are worth chasing and which aren't, otherwise they would waste a stupid amount of energy. They didn't catch the break on Saturday and it is gutting but that's road racing. Normally those race tactics would work but sometimes these things don't happen.
See the clown from twitter last night is being investigated by police.
Good.
I'm assuming he'll no be feeling too clever about it today.

Noticed yest that this thread was not at the top of the club pages and had to look for it
Can we go back to putting it at the top a couple of times a day as its developing into a great thread
Think the sky team used up to much energy at the tour de France and had nothing left
Did the winner ride in it ?
Found out he is a x drug cheat so not happy that he is allowed to win a gold medal but thats the rules we have to live with
You should multi thread it into the Scottish boards too.
I only stumbled across this by accident, and there's a lot of Scottish lads who'd bring some brilliant banter to it

Well done the the gymnasts yesturday, that should lift the whole GB team
What a perfomance, edge of the seat stuff even if the judges did their best to mess up the moment
Gold medals are not far away, the two girls in the rowing look nailed on for gold
What does everyone make of this swimmer winning gold, swimming faster than the men and breaking her PB by 5 seconds
Think the sky team used up to much energy at the tour de France and had nothing left

Not sure it's anything to do with Sky's performance in the TdF as a) Stannard was at the Tour de Pologne and Millar rode for Garmin and b) these bike riders ride in one day races after long races regularly. And Vino did ride in the TdF yes, regularly Trying to get an elusive stage win.
The reason that the breakaway wasnt caught was that not enough teams were interested in the bunch finish (only GB, Australia & Germany - and Aus wouldn't chase due to O'Grady being in the break) and thus ultimately 4 riders chasing 32 is never likely to work. The other sprint teams thought GB could do it on there own, which the break took advantage of - ultimately, with the reduced team size of 5 compared to 9 at the World Championships meant it was impossible to create a sprint finish.
As for Vinokourov, the man is an ex-doper yes. But he's also had a brilliant and enigmatic career. One of the best riders to watch in the Peleton the last couple of years and deserves the triumph now he's clean. Now his Palmares looks much better with this final success before retiring as opposed to the career of nearlys.
Cancellara, Martin, Wiggins, Van Gaarderen to be the top 4 in Today's TT
What does everyone make of this swimmer winning gold, swimming faster than the men and breaking her PB by 5 seconds

Wasn't even in the seeded heats
Remarkable performance, a joy to watch
People are so used to thinking that human boundaries are set in stone, we have become conditioned to believe that anything spectacular is fake or illegally manufactured.
as was the the 15 yr old that won gold last night...trains in the uk...by a uk coach...but swims for ukraine or lithuania or some such...
15 and olympic camp...she was so stunned afterwards she was lost for words in her interview with sharon.....
but swims for ukraine or lithuania or some such...

She swims for Lithuania because she's Lithuanian? What's wrong with that?
Naomi Folkard
I understand that records can be beat. but to beat your pb by 5 seconds is just not possible without help
What she did is the same as Usain Bolt running the 100 meters in 8 seconds
Its slightly suspicious but I'm sure if there's anything sinister going on the doping inspectors will catch it.
Just have to wait and see
i didnt say there was anything wrong with it...just stating the fact that she has a uk coach and trains in the uk....
Dont know where china have come from in the swimming
They have come from nowhere in the last few yrs
I see, apologies
Think it's much more believable considering her age, think her coach predicted her reaching the final before Olympics began too
accepted.
still...massive massive result.
i love the swimming....wish i was better at it....fantastic workout.
