Iconic!!!!!!

posted on 20/7/12

To be honest Affordable I think this is a good appointment, both of our clubs have had high profile managers in the last couple of seasons in Sven and McClaren and neither of these two really covered themselves in glory and Derby employed an 'Iconic' surname and have done very little (i'm sure one of the WUMS will come on and mention the 10 - conveniently forgetting the 5-2 of course). If you look at the last three seasons teams who have got automatic promotion have included Newcastle with Houghton (I not sure of the spelling) Norwich with Lambert and Southampton with Atkins - none of which would be in any way shape or form have been considered high-profile.
Also people have said that SOD is the cheap option but out of all the names bandied around (except Warnock) he is probably the only one for whom we have had to pay compensation for.
I'll admit I don't like Leicester but I'd rather dislike them as Premiership rivals than Championship rivals in the future

O Driscoll presides over decent football which the fans at Forest appreciate. He carries himself with dignity and is respected amongst his peers. He was in my top 3 most wanted so I'm happy.

Slightly underwhelmed, but also cautiously optimistic. The next month will give an indication as to how to feel, because at the minute there isn't a manager who get our tiny squad going.
Can't say what order we'll finish in, but both us above Derby who are destined for relegation.
One more thing - why is there a liverpool fan on our board? I feel violated.

Really happy with the appointment of SoD.

Thank you.

SoD - Cheap option. Yes man. Expect your midget Kuwaitis to feature this season.

Derby are close to having a better side than last season, we are expecting a striker by the start of the season or just after the start. (Believe it when I see it). We also have two young players in their first full
professional season, one is good the other exceptional with more ability than any of your players. If he can handle the tackles we will do well, so don't go writing us off just yet.

Very pleased. A solid, sound appointment.

Apparently, our owners listened to the players who spoke very highly of him.

After McClaren (and Sven at leicester), it seems a good appointment.

In going for Clough, Derby went for an iconic name, albeit the wrong one.

Of course there will be dissenters but you can't please everybody.

Iwas - I will feature very heavily in the upcoming season, Driscoll is merely my puppet

I don't think anyone is truly writing Derby off... It just makes easy banter with your current fiasco. Especially with our APPARENT turn in fortune (We'll wait and see how it goes). Whatever the case may be over there, Clough has done a decent job with what has been available to him, and he's been prepared to give the kids a chance. You have a good core of players and are really only missing that all important goalscorer.

As for Driscoll himself,he has a reputation of having his teams play good attractive football. OK, the games to wins ratio isn't heavily stacked in his favour, but that could be blamed on simple bad luck. He has the backing of the players, who are used to his coaching style and seemingly very excited to have him back. It should do wonders for morale after a very uncertain summer.

I was responding to the relegation comment Midget. You are looking at a period of stability, or are you. it's definitely a better position to two weeks ago.

I love the comparisons that can be drawn between Forest and Derby, from your Two Euro Cups and our two league titles to Nigel from Burton and Sean from Crawley and the hundreds of others in between. one I found especially funny this morning was SOD only winning one of his last 15 games at Donny but it would have to be against Derby.

That's good to know. I'm sure you'll regret pointing that out, when it's being used as an argument against you in the coming hours.

Yes he did have a turbulent time at the end of his Doncaster career, but he was a considered a great success in the seasons before it. I know a lot of Donaster fans were sorry to see him go, despite his losing streak.

In fact, a couple of seasons ago, when we were on our undefeated home streak, I remember being extremely disappointed that we were being overlooked on The Football League Show in favour of Doncaster's sexy football.

Sure it may not be the "iconic" signing we were all hoping for, but could he be the right man for the job? I think so, but time will tell.

So long as your owners are not hungry for instant success.

The thing that's quite funny about all this is, fans of quite a few clubs have had a wum on here, twitter or where ever.

He's not iconic blah blah blah. But I've never known Forest appoint a manager that the fans are as happy with from day one. The players obviously want him because they put his name forward. So everyone's pulling together and that's half the battle won straight away.

If we'd have got the big name we'd have been far more divided on if he was the right man or not

Sutton

To be honest the "iconic" statement has been a bit of a noose for the new owners, it has been grabbed by the media and the numpties and held up as the be all, end all of this deal.

I would rather have a good manager than an iconic manager. It will be interesting to see who we bring in on the playing side now but SOD is in a better position than most other managers would have been to judge what our club needs.

The signings we make will be a much better indicator of financial investment intentions.

Even if they are, no manager could absolutely guarantee instant success. Plus it's the first time he's ever had a real budget to work with, could very well turn out to be diamond. Who knows?

I am a Leicester fan, but I have quite a few links with Donny Rovers and he was very highly thought of at the club.
You will have more possession in nearly every game,
The only thing they complained about was sometimes passing for the sake of passing and he probably isn't great defensively.
Be interesting to see how much money he has to play with now.
Good luck apart from against us of course

So I understand it, O'Driscoll's style of management is to get his players to understand how to make the correct decisions on the pitch and why they are correct. I think it's a good philosophy to have and, if your owners are willing to stick with him, he has the potential to do well for you over the next two or three seasons. Certainly I wouldn't have minded him coming to Leicester whenever we've had managerial crises. (Most years.) Screw his win percentage.

The thing you'll have to watch for is that he seems to have a unfortunate habit of having a long injury list at his club, which suggests to me that his training methods aren't the best at staving off injuries or that he buys too many injury-prone players in the first place.

I was underwhelmed at first although had wanted SoD before we hired Cotts. I am growing on the idea more and more: he plays good football, came in when results got better last season, knows the division and has improved both clubs he managed considerably.

Bournemouth and Doncaster were perennial bottom league teams. He took Bournemouth up and nearly got them into the Championship a couple of times. Doncaster were in the 4th tier and he got them into the Championship. People are saying he's not used to having money to spend but that isn't too tough to cope with is it?!

The Kuwaiti player standing next to Guy Moussi in the Al hasawi video did look like a midget! Glad I'm not the only one.

You could be describing Nigel there. The difference is SoD should get the budget to buy the players who make the right decisions rather then gambling on lower league ones who often fail.

Davedarkly - What about the one in goal. He'd better have a jump on him.

Leicester fans above: thanks for your positive, balanced comments.

Got an interesting few years ahead.

Toronto, I work with a few forest fans and a good friend has a season ticket so have good banter throughout season.
I only see Coventry as our rivals and certainly dislike the sheep more.
Do you think you will be spending the sorts of daft money I've heard or think it will be a little more reserved?

posted on 20/7/12

Wigston - I really don't know.

The appointment of SoD points to a slower re-building process rather than a money-inspired quick fix.

I'm fine with that but not sure all Forest fans will be so patient.
