It all comes full circle illiterate people barbaric lands
i havent even got that channel on here so i cant watch it.
from the programme description though it looks like it's about 10th century, so that's no big surprise.
that's pagan celts returning to scotland from the sounds of it. from what i can tell everyone was a bit on the barbaric side there, with the english being no exception.
much of the irish population is descended from the old english anyway, which went over 12th century onwards, after the pope's request for the english to introduce catholicism and bring a bit of order.
the rest of the population is descended from (ancient) scotish celts (which became the gaels) and the vikings which arrived from the 8th to 11th centuries.
maybe ive got the catholicism thing wrong then. the pope did ask the king of england in the 12th century to spread catholicism in ireland, but maybe it had already taken plant there to a significant extent. that conflicts with the sources i had read, but maybe it is the case. it may be that it had flourished prior to the vikings' arrival, but that they had snuffed it out, and it was the english which rekindled the flame.
ive found the snow documentaries on youtube anyway so will watch them in the morning.
It was the vikings what done it :
"During the ninth & tenth centuries, waves of Norse warriors ransacked the countryside. The Vikings plundered everything in sight. The monasteries were favorite targets for their treasures of golden religious ornaments.
As the eighth century neared its close, religion and learning still flourished; but unexpected dangers approached and a new enemy came, before whose assaults monk and monastery and saint and scholar disappeared. These invaders were the Danes from the coasts of Scandinavia. Pagans and pirates, they loved plunder and war, and both on land and sea were formidable foes. Descending from their ships along the coast of western Europe, they murdered the inhabitants or made them captives and slaves.
In Ireland as elsewhere they attacked the monasteries and churches, desecrated the altars, carried away the gold and silver vessels, and smoking ruins and murdered monks attested the fury of their assaults. Armagh and Bangor, Kildare and Clonmacnoise, Iona and Lindisfarne thus fell before their fury. Under native and Christian chiefs churches were destroyed, church lands appropriated by laymen, monastic schools deserted, lay abbots ruled at Armagh and elsewhere. Bishops were consecrated without sees and conferred orders for money, there was chaos in church government and corruption everywhere."
I was wrong then. the english reintroduced the christianity which the vikings had wiped out.
You're welcome
You owe me a lot of apologies
fair enough.
i just had a quick read up on the pre viking period, and yeah it does look like the irish were the scholars of the day back then.
i look forward to watching the documentaries and learning more about it in the morning.

i commented about it on the record thread, and i think it's likely that he didnt want the incident to be discussed on there, so took the option of taking me off that thread rather than banning me.
just speculation, but i think that's quite likely.
