'Half way' would be good...
But after seeing the 1st half performance, It's not unreasonable to expect that we could finish a lot higher.

Zidic had to go...clumsy challenge or not, He'd not long since just elbowed Clarke in the face & had a stern warning...what do you think the Ref was going to do
Warn him again !

The 2nd half was....disappointing , after seeing how we ripped them apart before hand.
Why the needless hasty clearances...Why did off the ball players stop making themselves 'available'
Why & How did 10 men pile on the pressure...Clarke & Smithies (outstanding save) spared Terrier blushes..It was almost that close, & there was no need for it to be that way. 4-0 at half time, & NO Brummie could have complained.
I enjoyed the game,
But the fact is, We should have been comfortably out of sight before the sending off...
Still. made for an exciting finish

ps. Beckford. On that showing, no complaint from me.
Worked hard on & off the ball, Linked well with Vaughan & Ward... More of the same, Lets hope we have seen the last of this ridiculous tactic of One man up front on their own.

In the 2nd half Birmingham started to play long ball up to that beanpole..it's dificult to defend against because once the ball is in the air the big guy can run behind the defence, who are then turning and facing their own goal...hence dropping deep so at least you are facing the ball when it's lobbed up in the air...it was a crude tactic but did cause us to have to drop off a bit. However Grayson kept 3 up and we had plenty of chances on the break...

If we can keep an interest in the play off zone up til January then we'll be over achieving..There are some pretty mediocre teams in the this league..Birmingham, Burnley, Wednesday...but there are a sprinkling of good teams too...Wolves will be another big test for us but after that we should win the next 6.....

Smithies - 8, did what he needed to very well, a couple of important saves and his distribution was good all game.
Hunt - 8, Solid for the most part at the back and made some important lung busting runs forward.
Clarke - 8, Very solid game again from the skipper.
Gerrard - 6, Made some important blocks but his ability on the ball makes Clarke look like Ronaldo.
Woods - 8, Very impressive performance, we know he offers nothing going forward but did what he had to do defensively very well.
Clayton - 7, Hard working performance, for me could have done a lot better with a few of chances that fell his way.
Norwood - 8, Seemed hungry for it again, showed for the ball more than he did in the 2 recent defeats and used it a lot better.
Southern - 10, Outstanding performance from the beast, MOTM.
Ward - 8, We really are seeing the proper Danny Ward this season, excellent again.
Beckford - 8, Struggled once Vaughan went off with holding the ball up but made plenty of good runs which I don't think we're used to a striker making so never found him. Worked very well on and off the ball, very good.
Vaughan - 9, We missed him so much when he was injured, and he showed again how good he is when fit. Is that now 0 from 9 without him and 17 from 21 with him? Brilliant.

I didn't cheer Clark once and didn't join in with the "Lee Clark is a terrier" rubbish, but I thoroughly enjoyed him showing how stupid he is by waving at the away support while 1-0 down and playing rubbish. Anyone who doubted his sacking or even thought for one second he was a good manager needs to have a good word with themselves.

TERRIER CAS..
peter dropped back in.. at least twice they had opportunities close in and he was actually still stood behind smithies!!!!
you just can go any deeper without having to buy a ticket..
it brings everyone else deep and we all end up on top of each other..it has to stop..
advice to team...if you dont have to give the ball to either centre back, then dont...

I am trying to get Wor lee out of my system completely, but sadly some of you lot just can't do likewise.

So, if he's shiite how many other "rookie" managers can any of you lot list, with a better record in their first job in football management?

In case you've forgotten, it was:

P178 - W87 - D51 - L40 - 48.88% Win record.

Which also included an unbeaten league record of 43 matches, plus he made the play-off's in both his first two full season's in charge.

So, although he might be struggling at the moment at Brum, I reckon all decent Town fans will still wish him all the best, except for the poisoned few who are currently swarming all over the Brum boards to spread their hate for everything LC.

At least Larry was gracious enough to acknowledge the part Wor Lee played in last season's promotion campaign, and oh, didn't he also sign a player from Ipswich for a few hundred thousand quid, who we made us an almost £8 Million quid profit, or have you lot already blanked this out of your blinkered minds.

posted on 7/10/12

So his good traits:
- Decent first season
- Signed Rhodes
- 43 games unbeaten

Bad traits:
- Dire second 2 seasons
- 90% of his signings were awful
- Refused to accept our weaknesses
- Berated press for questioning him
- Constantly accepted draws which cost us
- Ultimately failed despite unlimited backing

Oh, and as for managers who've done better in their first job - there will be plenty who have actually achieved goals in their first season such as avoiding relegation or promotion. They might not have an unbeaten run or brilliant win percentage (which mean nothing) but they will actually have ACHIEVED something. I believe our current manager would fall into that category, got Blackpool promoted in his first management role didn't he?

Cas,

You say 90% of his signings were awful, but wasn't it these same 90% who were ultimately got us promoted under Larry last season? - and wasn't it Larry who signed that useless t-sser Mendis?

As for him "ultimately failing" last season - how do you or anyone else know that he would have failed, had he not been fired prematurely?

Don't forget he also picked up more points in his 30 matches in charge, than Larry did in his 16 match stint - and anyhow, I reckon Town were destined to get promoted last season whoever was in charge, because it was simply "written in the stars".

Oh, and how can his second full season be classified as dire, particularly when we came within 20 mins of reaching the Championship?

Cas, admit it, you've never felt as optimistic about Town as you have done over the past three seasons, so lay off Wor Lee now and accept that he's now part of Town's history.

Mirf, i would hope that Clark got more points in 30 games, than Grayson got in 16., talking tosh as usual!

Nope - but had Brum beaten us on Saturday, both teams would have been on 14 points -so there's nowt much for you to crow about at the moment - the night is young.

Oh and when I said Clarke had won more points last season than Larry, Wethers knows full well that I meant he'd averaged more points per game in his 30 games, than Larry did in his 16.

In Larry I now trust

Although I hope Wor Lee's luck changes shortly and he has a good season - why would I wish otherwise? - unless I'm a bitter and twisted Terrier?

To be honest , I tend to agree with Mirf's last sentence there..time to move on.

We all have opinions and in the end it us pure speculation as to whether LC would have got us up last season, he'd certainly got us into the play-offs again and nobody knows what would have happened.

I know it's topical on this thread 'cos he's manager at Brum, but he certainly tried his hardest at Town unlike Bruce who beggared off to do a man Utd commentary when he was needed to sort things out at Town.

I don't want LC to fail at Brum, why would I ? Up to the Millwall 2nd leg we played some good stuff, he maybe should have stuck to those principles. Even the great Ian Greaves struggled with Town in the end.

Managers as a general (not always) rule have a 3 year impact, then it's time to refresh and renew. It's never a lifetime job unless you're an AF or an AW of course.

I'll leave it with the Clark bashing after this, but the whole "It was Clarks team that got us up" and "Grayson acknowledged Clark after the Playoff final" things are rubbish.

a) Grayson was always going to acknowledge Clark, it's just good PR. He's hardly going to go to a new club and say the previous manager was doing a poor job, and then upset all his players by saying they're rubbish. He said he thought Clark had assembled a great squad when he took over and he thanked Clark for building the great squad when we got promoted. However, he dismantled that squad at the first opportunity and made it ten times better on a similar budget to what Clark had in the first place.

b) It wasn't Clarks team that got us promoted, it was very much Graysons team. With hindsight admittedly as I gave Larry some stick at the time, it's clear to see what he did leading up to the Playoffs. He tinkered with the team, the formation, the personnel, everything, until he knew what his best 11 was for the 3 games that actually mattered. He was also aided a little by the return of Damien Johnson who we would not have been promoted without, but other than that it was definitely the team he had built in a few short months that got us promoted.

Clark deserves praise for his first full season in charge, we played some brilliant football and it was one of the most enjoyable I've had as a fan. However, the 2 after that were massive failures - there was no excuse for being pipped to the post by Southampton and there was no excuses for the abject performances in the playoffs (struggling to beat Bournemouth and then getting thumped by Posh). I also think it's quite clear to see we would not have been promoted had we stick with Clark last season - yes it's impossible to prove but the difference between him and Grayson is massive.

Grayson came in, spoke positively about the team, kept all the players happy, gave everyone a chance, and ultimately found his best 11. Clark constantly berated his own players when things went wrong, alienated players for poor performances (McCombe, Gudjonsson and Arfield as examples), and never knew his best 11 - we had reached an impass (after the Millwall game IMO) and were stuck in limbo, something needed to change.

Did Lee Clak try his best? Yes, and I'm sure he's trying his best at Birmingham as well, but how similar were Birmingham to us at the beginning of last season? No midfield, shaky defence, hoofball when things weren't going right, players obviously discontent - he's clearly learnt nothing from the mistakes he made with us, in fact I still don't think he's accepted the mistakes he made in order to learn from them.

Lay off poor Lee, he's not a bad lad.

We had a cracking first season under his leadership scoring goals galore.
Second season not as free scoring but still some decent football played and a great run in(inc 6 away wins on the trot) only for the team to fold like a pack of cards in the last 15mins at Old Trafford.

Cas,

Get your blinkers off for a change and accept that Clark also did many good things for Town, plus he made us over £9 million quid of profit with the sales of Pilkington, Peltier & Rhodes, which more than covered the cost of all the other players he signed.

a) Clark would have also dismantled last years squad had we got promoted, otherwise we would have gone straight back down this season.

What Grayson said about Clark must have been true, since it was the very same squad which got us promoted.

b) There was nothing to choose between the team Clark left behind and the one which Grayson built to get us promoted. The true difference was that Grayson's team had a shed load of luck when it mattered most in the penalty shoot-out. How many teams can you recollect who missed their first three spot kicks in a penalty shoot-out, but still triumphed? - I can't think of any.

This was luck on a grand scale and had FA to do with Grayson and was more in the "Lap of the Gods".

c) How can you say that season's 2 & 3 were "Massive failures", particularly when we finished in the Play-off's on both occasions and were only 20 minutes away from promotion last season, when things turned against us.

I'll grant you that when Grayson came in he did shuffle up the pack a little, and lets not forget the "Magnificent Mendi" he also signed. However, lets not also forget that he failed to average the same points/game return, as Clark had managed in his earlier 30 match stint, so points wise he had not been as successful as Clark, whether you like it or not.

As for Brum, Clark inherited a team of "has-beens" who were very low on confidence, following relegation last season, so things can only get better for him from hereon.

No cas, when it comes to the subject of Lee Clark there's only "Wakey" and maybe "Jacko", who don't begrudge him a little bit of credit for some of the things he did get right, and don't forget the unbeaten 43 match run, which kept Town in the headlines for most of the season.

It's a good job fans like you and one or two others on here, don't support Sheffield Wednesday, because last year you would have been having organism's about Dave Jones, whilst this campaign you would have already been calling for his head.

Season 2 - the silly unbeaten run started and Clark started to accept points instead of going for 3. Had we actually attempted to win matches we would have definitely finished above Southampton, but instead our luck ran out in the playoffs and we got what had been coming to us for a while.

Season 3 - The wheels really came off, I can name good performances on one hand. Rhodes was knocking in 4 or 5 in some matches to carry us but in others we were completely impotent, not to mention the constant chucking points away when we were in front. We were woeful, no way would we have gone up with Clark in charge.

Clark inherited a Brum team who did very well last season, and was allowed to add high paid players such as Hayden Mullins, Peter Lovenkrands and Darren Ambrose in, as well as Leroy Lita and Ravel Morrison on loan. Yet performances have gone from good last season to dire this season, and most of the "has-beens" are players he personally brought in himself. I have loads of good mates who are Birmingham City fans - I know very well just how much of a poor job he is doing.

The team that played in both legs v MK Dons and in the final against Sheff Utd is completely unrecognisable to the one that played against Sheff Utd in Clarks last game in charge. Performances were dire and were getting worse every game - I don't see how anyone could have had confidence in him getting us promoted.

I get that you made yourself look a bit silly 2 seasons in a row (now 3 actually) by sticking by your assertion that he's the best young manager in the country, but you could very easily just accept you got it massively wrong.
