Dembele + International Football

Apologies if I'm repeating - I haven't read the thread
entirely.Dembele started well for us but imo went missing a fair bit in his later games (before the injury).

Anyway, I've heard it's a long-standing injury since he was at Fulham, and no-one really knows (yet) what's up with it. I read AVB said it's a hard one to pick up on scans.

With Parker out we needed another CM in the summer imo. I say that as a huge fan of Thudd, but from what we've seen of him so far AVB (or whoever) was quite right to want to send him on loan to get regular games and his fitness up to par.

As per always, we look light in CM to me. One injury and we're screwed.

AVB was right - we needed Moutinho or Willian in the summer.

We have plenty of cover in CM, its just AVB has been playing them on the wings.

we needed them but waited till deadline day as usual to make our move.. will we ever learn

To be fair, i think we did quite well with our deadline day signings. I would have taken the proven pair of Dempsey & Dembele over the other 2 any day.

Its only now Dembele is injured the debate will come up again. We were all pretty happy before.

I was not happy and i said so.. i said the club has excepted that it wont push on and just concentrating on the new staduim, you cant keep top 4 if you dont keep improving and we made a profit again in this market <grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Weare - don't get me started on our usual summer shenanigans

This is one of the reasons imo we need to give AVB time. Evryone could see who his targets were and Levy didn't deliver (even supposedly flying over to sign Willian and then going back on the agreed price )

Moutinho was always a pipe dream, even if it was a beautiful one.

Pipe dreams is all we ever get now nows

^ By extending my point there a bit, I can say perhaps that as long as we are doing ok (par or even just below for a season or so) give AVB as much time as Harry had. I am certain we'd win a cup in that time, rather than going out by a 4 goal difference at every advanced round.

Its time for this club to win trophys again, i know we need the money from top 4 but its about glory not money for fans and any fan who says he prefers top 4 to a trophy either has shares or is a armchair fan in my view

redrob,

You would have taken Dembele and Dempsey over Moutinho and Willian? Really?

=======================

Yes. Both proven, in the league we play in, and for the jobs we... want(ed) them to do.

Spending £22m on a player from the Portuguese league is very risky.

It doesnt seem too long ago we'd bought a goal machine from Porto (Hélder Postiga), 22 goals in 58 appearances, only for him to score just 1 in 19 for Spurs.

Weare - I was so jealous of Liverpool last season in the domestic cups. Two finals and won the smaller one. Just that one small trophy would make my season. Even back in the 'bad old days' we used to get a league cup or two every ten years to ease the pain...

Don't think Moutinho was that big a risk. He had an excellent game v Spain at the Euros.

What?!

====================

We played Dempsey on the LW, then when he went off we played Sigi there, even when we had a winger on the bench.

chicken. siggy was very dangerous from the left in the second half.

had his finishing not been poor he would have had at least two goals.

So one game, where our LM was ruled out about an hour before kick off, accounts to a whole season? (your comment implied that it had been going on all season)

Dempsey can play LM, although maybe our higher pace style didn't suit him as well as it did Fulham. It would've been a big decision to drop Townsend into a massive game like that.

kent. personally i would have played townsend.. but i reckon AVB didnt because he was worried about townsends defensive work being good enough

-------------------

That is amazingly good to hear

I missed the second half and it sounded amazing (had to drive so listened on the radio), but I have never yet (all our games this season) seen anything really good from Siggy so far (apart from most of his set-pieces that were way better than VDV's - i.e. they cleared the first defender more than once or twice a season).

And that's despite rating Siggy highly as one of my most 'Spurs should buy him' of all the teams we played last season (saw every game).

Hope he comes good, but I think it'll take a while (after Christmas is when I'll judge I think.)

all our shots went straight at Cech , on another day we would of won if we defended better

posted on 23/10/12

I'd have preferred Townsend to have come on for the last 20 but like you say Sig was doing ok and it would've been harsh to sub him when his confidence is low.

And if we defended better we would've won by 4 instead of 2.

Agreed, although he'd already tried Dempsey on the left and changed it after 45 minutes because it wasn't working. At least we know Sigs can do a job there if required, shame Townsend didn't get a chance but then it's not really fair to expect him to change a game like that.

Somewhat a contradiction ? He was hardly dangerous if his finishing was poor was he ?
