Long ball gets a bad rap because it lacks the 'sophistication' of a more measured, possession based approach.
I wouldn't personally want to see us going route one again, but when it worked for us under Graham, it really worked for us.
Letting the other team do all the graft and then quickly crushing them with a quick 'one-two-GOAL!!!' was a pretty great feeling, to be honest.
I think the long ball tactic of play kinda projects an image of the old days of English football and therefore the completely unjustifiable reasoning that it’s no longer suitable within the modern day game. I have to agree with your point however, since I don’t see why some form of the long-ball tactic cannot be adapted to the modern system currently doing the rounds.
The problems occurs when the sole ethos of your game revolves around the singular tactic of hoofing the ball to a lanky forward and having the game played off him. But isn’t that similar to limiting yourself on the singular tactic of playing tikky takky with little other option available when things are not going as planned? I mean Barcelona might show the Ultimate idealisation of the beautiful game, with their pretty and quick passing, but what then when you meet a force like Chelsea.
Frankly speaking, the hoof-ball tactic is nothing to be ashamed of when it produces the desired aim of getting wins and results. In actual fact, I would say the current Arsenal side do not utilise that tactic often enough, when the opposition is set well and hard to break through.

Quite right. There's no shame at all in doing the basics well. Long ball may be route one football is a tried and true relic of the game like the 4-4-2 formation. Old fashioned doesn't mean it doesn't have a place in the modern game.
I'm a big fan of a fluid passing game and some of the football we played through September was phenomenal but a little revision when our tactics get stale will do our goal tally a lot of good.

"Full backs should stay back after training specifically to practice this."
---------------
As should Walcott and Chamberlain.
Did you hear what Phillipe Auclair had to say about Falcao and his free-kick taking last night?
The guy is not only talented, but super-dedicated too.

I'm sure they all work very hard, just more emphasis must be placed on crossing the ball if Giroud is playing centrally.
Of course, this is all moot if Gervinho is going to retain his place as a centre forward.

Our corners also need work. Very easy for the first defender to lump it clear as our corners are often his quite low.
A floaty corner would work just fine if the tall players are in the box.

Why is Podolski not making crosses?
Or Cazorla when he is pushed wide like he was on Saturday?
Or Arteta floating in a cross early?
===================
Good questions Melo. Especially in view of Giroud's goal against West Ham. Passsing the ball around the box looks nice but there is nothing wrong with driving to the byline and putting the ball in a dangerous area.
On another note, while Arteta has been quite reliable in retaining possession, I noticed a couple of times he failed to see an out ball to Gervinho on the right. Instead, he squared it over to Santos and the potential for a quick break was lost - which means Norwich were given time for a defensive transition. They were compact because we allowed them that.
Melo - due to a request for a cesation of wumming between Arsenal and Celtic fans I now extend the hand of friendship and will only post on your board in a positive manner or with some genuine banter
