I just remember Magilton's sides playing some amazing football, with some average players, a bit like us under Burley.

Backo...I agree we were in limbo in June....not able to buy players, no new owner and owned by Nigel Doughtys estate... we were in a mess......everything turned on it's head when the Al-Hasawi family came in and made such a difference in such a short time...........just like GSE

What about it TEG?...O'Driscoll was taking Doncaster backwards...they are League 1 now. Didnt build any legacy there.

You wont get an argument over GSE with me Pep

wrong Backo, he wasnt 'taking them backwards'! The job was just too much for any manager.

A bit like us in the Prem. No manager could've kept us up!

Come off it Backo. SOD finished higher with Donny than Clough ever has with you. He also got them promoted, his budget was lower than Derby's and his team stripped

TEG Your talking about a Leauge 1 promotion...even Forest did that. Theres a few teams finished above Derby once in the last 4 years...some are still in the Championship tho...which brings me to Mostyn...Were Doncaster going backwards with O'Driscoll's signings?

posted on 27/10/12

think he only made 2 in his last season. But I cannot remember now and I cannot be bothered to research, but my opinion is my opinion, and yours is yours. I think Clough has done damage to Derby's performances, results and players, I dont think O'Driscoll has to his teams.

Id like to know your answer on this Mostyn.... Do you think O'Driscoll would get Derby promoted under the budget GSE give Clough?....Do you think O'Driscoll could of cleared out massive contracts any quicker than Clough?

No i do respect your opinion Mostyn....im just debating it. I just think O'Driscoll is nowhere near being proven better than Clough

Clough had one of the best squads in this league when he took over Derby, what did he do with them?

posted on 27/10/12

Sent them to Coventry

Backo, I actually think people over-emphasise the 'cost-cutting' that Clough has supposedly done. I dont think there's a player that Clough actually wanted to keep that ended up being sold. He fell out with both Hulse and Commons, and Commons only got into the side when Pearson and Teale were injured. Shackell was outed by Clough and not the board. Clough extended contracts of Bywater, Teale, Pearson and Leacock, but then wanted rid of all four not long after. Clough has also courted several players and then binned them instantly, like Martin, Maguire, Davies etc.

I think given the resources that Clough has been, which people undervalue, including wasting money on loans cos he was scared to buy, I reckon O'Driscoll could've got us in the top six by now and in contention for promotion.

The word 'proven' is subjective. A lot of people would suggest Roberto Martinez is unproven, but O'Driscoll has achieved as much as him.

Mostyn. Hulse wanted to come back from QPR...Thats not someone who fell out with Clough. Clough offered as much as he could to Commons and to say he fell out with him is silly. Dont get me wrong....im not saying Clough is perfect..but O'Driscoll is far from being proven as better than Clough.

posted on 27/10/12

Nope, deffo not Backo, sent to Coventry as in never to be seen again.

posted on 27/10/12

WHO said he is proven better? I've said twice and I'll repeat it again and hope it registers, in MY OPINION, O'Driscoll is a better manager than Nigel Clough.

Ian Dowie, Phil Brown and Ady Boothroyd are PROVEN to be better managers than Nigel Clough! 'Proof' is subjective.

Hulse and Clough fell out as NC took sides with Savage over Hulse. Clough didnt want Commons, as he didnt work hard enough, he was never even offered a contract, it was a ruse to trick the fans who loved Commons.

And i asked you why Mostyn. Dont think you have said anything to back up your opinion other than try to have a go at Nigel Clough again. Just my opinion Derby lose and you are all over 606, Derby win...and we dont see you. People see it Mostyn..

Clough has dealt with difficult stuff though. Look at how he handled Savage, a problem player on big money and no sell on value. It's no coincidence, I feel, that we've become a more competitive unit since he retired.

As for Clough's record on signings, he has plenty of misses but he tends to shift players on at the right time. I was sorry to Shackell go but Burnley have been indifferent. Maguire has disappeared from view at Hillsborough and will probably surface back in Scotland.

Commons was offered a contract, we dithered and Celtic pounced but then we were being held to ransom by a player who had had two injury-hit years and who Clough got playing to the best of his ability. Hulse did nothing at QPR despite playing in a better team and under a manager who knew him. It was the failure to replace him that cost us that season.

I feel that Clough put his faith in experienced players, like Bywater & Pearson (I think Leacock's contract was extended by Jewell?) partly I think because it was cheaper than paying fees and agent costs. I feel these players let him down; they were inconsistent.

Clough has never had substantial backing, look at our team, so many players have been sourced at inexpensive fees, Theo (£200k) & some of them have proved excellent (Ward & Bryson). It makes you wonder what he could achieve with some proper backing alongside the youth players he has developed. Gjokaj kind of reminds me of Ayala. Don't you think Clough would have liked to have gone out & brought Ayala in as a partner for Keogh?

Sean O'Driscoll may be a better manager, due to experience, but I'd be interested to see how he'd cope in the PL. I think he'd be like Nigel Adkins, naive. I'm not an expert on tactics etc, vis Mostyn, but Martinez is a quality manager.

Capn, fair assessment. I note that people now admit Savage not being in the team has allowed us to be more competetive in midfield, yet at the time, when I was pointing out that the opposition central midfielders were always MOTM, people were disagreeing as confusing workrate/effort with effectiveness.
