Man City vs Ajax Official Match Thread

Are you talking about Oliver Holt's article today where he suggests that "their (city's) struggles so far this season have represented a worrying lack of progress."?

It's amazing that this conversation's even about United. Last night's game was between third and fourth in another group, couldn't really have less to do with United.

Then why is this match thread posted on United's board?

You'll have to ask the OP

The OP can see my post. I'm sure he'll answer it if he feels inclined...

Funny because united fans could have not commented on a match nothing to do with them, but it's us that are obsessed, an holt does have a point about fergie an refs.

posted on 7/11/12

But what did Fergie have to do with last night? You'd be better off talking about why you suddenly can't defend corners etc. rather than concocting a bonkers Ferguson led conspiracy.

If we get beat off Braga tonight I'm sure you'll have something to say about it. Or will you not?

The match thread was created to help our neighbours. They are new to this level of competition and may have not known what to do

'thirteen years in ferguson's case' - the difference being that ferguson was hindered by the foreign player rule for almost half that period. city and mancini have had no such restrictions and unlimited transfer funds, yet couldn't even beat a side home or away who are our even reserves put out of europe last season.

Ole, were other clubs not hindered by those rules?

"Ole, were other clubs not hindered by those rules?"

Indeed, however, given United's first stab at the CL under Fergie was '94 and he won it in '99 he took a lot less to win it really didn't he? We were in the UEFA cup in '96 too.

English clubs had been banned from Europe from 85 til 90 and I think it took a while for English clubs to adjust.

Having said that I know you'd have been cheering United's cavalier rollercoaster ride to CWC glory in Rotterdam in 91 though Boris - great to see English clubs back on the map, eh?

posted on 7/11/12

indeed they were, boris. city however have not been hindered by any such stipulations, either this season or last.

United's first game (under Fergie) in the CL was in 1993. They went out in the 2nd round (before the group stage).

In 1994-95, they failed to qualify from the group stage.

In 1995-96, United lost to Rotor in the first round of the UEFA cup.

The 1996-97 season was the first season they really made a mark, reaching the semi-finals.

if we're talking europe in general, which it would appear you are by including the uefa cup run in 95-96, then i'd say that winning the cup winners cup in 1991 (ferguson's first european campaign with the club no less) was 'really making a mark' in europe.

Ole, I am referring to the years that Post Nearly Man pointed out. I.e. since United first played in the Champions League.
