If the BNP commit racist determined crimes they would be, why do you think JT was charged in a criminal court if racism is lega?

Didn't Martin O'Neil remove his poppy ASAP?

I don't agree with McCleans views, but I do respect his right to not wear the symbol. It is not as if he burnt a poppy in the centre circle during the minutes silence, or urinated up the leg of a war veteran.

Why should he have to wear it? He shouldn't.

JT was charged becasue he was accussed of something lets not forget he was NOT FOUND GUILTY! a charge is simply that!

Not wearing a poppy, the lad should have had the backbone to walk out with his balaclava on!

I am absolutely stunned at some of the stuff I am reading .......

Where's the freedom of speech and freedom of choice ...

This is bigotry towards Irish people ..... You guys wouldn't pipe up if this was a Muslim or otherwise

If it's a Muslim player, the reaction would be worse.

But by wearing one he could be accused of hypocrisy and also accused of disrespecting those who died at the hands of British soldiers in his homeland.

He showed respect by observing a one minutes silence on the pitch. That should be enough, imo.

I hope everyone having a go at him wore a poppy and went quiet at 11am this morning for 2 minutes. Would hate to think any of you are hypocrites yourselves...

If the BNP said person X is an FBC, they would have broken the law. Saying all black people are ethnically not British and therefore should be deported isn't breaking the law.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay I see, although I don't see how that is not racist though. Deporting BLACK people, even if they were born in this country, just sounds a bit racist to me.

On the actual article I agree that McClean should have worn one but ultimately it is his prerogative to choose whether he wears one. He didn't harm anyone by making the choice not to wear one. Some people may have been offended by it but then some people will be offended by Terry and Suarez's continual appearances on a football pitch in England. It defeats the entire purpose of Remembrance Sunday if social tyranny forces individuals who would otherwise not wear one to wear one.

Should a place dictate where you earn a living, what religious you have , your political beliefs, your personal beliefs,

I thought England was a multi cultural society

You are really surprising me with your views

SDB racism isn't really illegal. Racial abuse/inciting racial hatred are. And I guess the BNP can claim they are not deliberately seeking to incite hatred just representing the views of 1.7% of the country have as of the 2010 general election.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I understand what you are saying. But I don't get how it is wrong to say FBC to a black person, but it allowed to call for all BLACK people to be deported out this country?? Just does not make sense to me.

no i just think you should wear a poppy, as a show of respect and gratitude to the sacrifice of the soldiers, because without their sacrifice we would be living in a very different country, whether youre from ireland, israel or the moon

Beat me to it.

England is a multicultural and somewhat free society compared to a lot of the others. It's not illegal to not where a poppy, it is not harming any one, but I see how it can upset people.

I would also say that I have only seen articles on this based on newspaper reports highlighting the missing poppy. Did anyone even notice he didn't have it on when watching MOTD or goals on sunday? (did they highlight it?)

If the media didn't highlight it it wouldn't be an issue, would it?

anyway the article asks how do people feel about it and judging from the reponses so far it seems split down the middle, which is interesting.

I don't wear one because of universal soldier by buffy St Marie

the poppy is a freedom of choice mate! The poppy is symbol of men going to war and not coming back. If a players chooses not to wear it that's his choice and no one has the right to say anything else! The people who died (mainly ww2) in service, died fighting for freedom so you can have the life you have now!

The OP comes across as young and trying to be clever with student politics, when he really hasn't a clue what the poopy is really about!
