A sunken ship found in the Nile river may have lain undisturbed for over 2,500 years, but it is finally ponying up its secrets. Scientists think that this ship has revealed a structure whose existence has been debated for centuries.
In fragment 2.96 of Herodotus' Histories, published around 450 BCE, the Ancient Greek historian - who was writing about his trip to Egypt - describes a type of Nile cargo boat called a baris.
Enter Ship 17, of the now-sunken port city Thonis-Heracleion near the Canopic Mouth of the Nile, dated to the Late Period, 664-332 BCE. Here, researchers have been exploring over 70 shipwrecks, discovering countless artefacts that reveal stunning details about the ancient trade hub and its culture.
Although it's been in the water for at least 2,000 years, the preservation of Ship 17 has been exceptional. Archaeologists were able to uncover 70 percent of the hull.
"It wasn't until we discovered this wreck that we realised Herodotus was right," archaeologist Damian Robinson of The Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology told The Guardian back in March 2019.
The ship displays several elements noted by Herodotus.

Ryan Hoyle, 38, said he was "shaking" when he got an email informing him he had become a multi-millionaire in Friday's EuroMillions draw.
He drove to his parents' house, passing his phone through the window for them to "double-check" his numbers.
After confirming the eight-figure bonanza, he enjoyed a drink in the sunshine with his siblings.
Mr Hoyle, of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, said he first thought he had won £2.30 when he saw an email from the National Lottery on Saturday.

Phil Neville is to leave his role as England women's manager next summer.
The 43-year-old former Manchester United and Everton defender was appointed in January 2018 on a contract until the summer of 2021.
He led the Lionesses to a first SheBelieves Cup success and a fourth-place finish at the World Cup in 2019.
But since last year's quarter-final win over Norway, they have lost seven of 11 games and failed to retain their SheBelieves Cup title in March.

West Ham manager David Moyes has been delivering fruit and vegetables to local residents during the coronavirus lockdown.
The Hammers boss has been giving a helping hand to the elderly in his local village near the Lancashire seaside after answering an advert calling for volunteers.
Moyes revealed he has spent four days behind the wheel already as he continues to be unable to perform his day-to-day duties as a football coach.
Leeds United are to rename the South Stand at Elland Road in honour of club legend Norman Hunter, who died aged 76 after contracting coronavirus.
Hunter made 726 appearances during 14 years as a player for the club.
He helped them win six trophies and also played 28 times for England.
"Naming the South Stand after Norman is the very least we could do to recognise the lifetime of hard work and dedication he gave to our football club," said owner Andrea Radrizzani.
"Norman was respected and loved by everyone connected to the club and as we battle through uncertain times it is unlikely that he will be able to be given the send-off he deserves and therefore we expect the South Stand to be bouncing when fans are finally allowed to return to Elland Road and pay their respects to a giant of the game."
Clubs in League One and League Two have written to the English Football League asking for salary caps to be introduced next season.
The letter was sent on behalf of 37 of the 47 teams by Mansfield Town chairman John Radford.
It follows a meeting on Monday of senior club officials in the third and fourth tiers to discuss salary caps.
There are big doubts the 2019-20 season will finish because of the number of players out of contract on 30 June.
In the letter, Radford says that, ideally, clubs want to end the campaign no later than 31 July.

The incident happened after Spurs were knocked out of the FA Cup at home by Norwich.

Dier has until 8 May 2020 to respond.
The 2019–20 Israeli constitutional crisis (ICC) was a constitutional crisis resulting from former Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein refusing to follow a court order to hold a vote on his "successor". This followed three legislative elections in which neither Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud coalition nor his opponent Benny Gantz's Blue and White coalition were able to secure majority backing from the Knesset in forming a cabinet. The crisis ended when Gantz was voted in as speaker on 26 March, with the support of the Likud party.

This was also the first time that Orange County voted Democratic since then when Franklin D. Roosevelt swept every single county in the state. Trump's vote share in the state (31.62%) was the lowest for a major-party candidate since John W. Davis's 8.2% in 1924.
