British number one Emma Raducanu is heading to Melbourne, but her prospects of playing in the Australian Open remain unclear.

Raducanu, 20, retired from her second round match at the ASB Classic in Auckland on Thursday after slipping and rolling her left ankle.

The full extent of the problem is yet to be diagnosed, but the hope is that it is only a minor strain.

The first Grand Slam of the year starts on 16 January.

Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, had not entered any tournaments next week.

She began 2023 with victory over teenager Linda Fruhvirtova in her opening match in New Zealand in preparation for the season's first major.

But the world number 78 left the court in tears after rolling her ankle during the second set against Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova, with the score 6-0 5-7. She later criticised the "slippery" courts.

Raducanu's 2022 season was plagued by injury as she retired from five matches, but in December she had said she was feeling "good".

Almost a third of university courses are still combining face-to-face teaching with online learning in 2022-23, data gathered by the BBC suggests.

Data from 50 of the 160 universities surveyed shows 28% of courses are being taught in a hybrid way, compared with 4.1% in 2018-19 before the pandemic.

One student said he feels like he is paying thousands of pounds per year for a "glorified streaming service".

But an official says many students appreciate the flexibility and freedom.

Everton defender Conor Coady says they are in "a bad place" but that they showed they are fighting for manager Frank Lampard despite defeat at Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Lampard and Everton went into the game under severe pressure after a 4-1 thrashing by Brighton on Tuesday left them in the Premier League drop zone.

This was a much better display, with only a Marcus Rashford stoppage-time penalty sealing a 3-1 win for United.

"We need to keep fighting," said Coady.

Tana was in a humid cave checking the rind on a round of Tomme when the messenger arrived to tell her that the war was lost and her wife was to be hanged. She took her time rewrapping the cheese before she responded. Still too soft. Another week, she estimated. The rind was a beautiful blue-black shade that would catch a maid’s eye in the market.

A former international footballer has been charged after being arrested by Gardai in Dublin following a short car chase with cocaine worth an estimated £4,000 in the glove box.

Anthony Stokes, 34, who played two minutes in a league cup match for Arsenal was detained in Dublin after he and a passenger allegedly attempted to run from the car containing the drugs.

Gardai followed Stokes and his passenger through Dublin's southside before the pair abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot.

The sister of a man who is facing a large medical bill after a motorbike crash in Thailand has urged others to check their travel insurance policies.

The Boxing Day crash left 28-year-old Adam Davies with serious injuries, including a fractured skull.

Adam, from Dinas Cross, Pembrokeshire, now faces large medical costs which are not covered by his travel insurance.

His provider, Lloyds Bank encouraged customers to check the terms and conditions of their insurance.

Adam's family have raised £20,000 to pay for treatment, but have warned others to check their policy's fine print.

An Italian man has admitted stealing more than 1,000 unpublished manuscripts, many written by high-profile authors.

Filippo Bernardini impersonated figures from the publishing industry to trick people into handing over their works.

He used his inside industry knowledge, having been employed by the publishing giant Simon & Schuster in London.

Bernardini, 30, pleaded guilty in New York to wire fraud, but his motive has never been clear.

Manuscripts were not found to have been leaked on the internet, nor were any ransom demands made.

The conviction of Bernardini, who was arrested by the FBI in January last year, appears to explain a mystery that has baffled the literary world for years, with Margaret Atwood, Ian McEwan and Sally Rooney among the novelists targeted.

Prosecutors said he registered more than 160 fake internet domains from 2016.

Agents, editors and Booker Prize judges all fell victim to phishing scams from slightly altered official-looking email addresses, requesting manuscripts of works by authors including Booker winner Margaret Atwood.

Ana Montes - among the best-known Cold War spies caught by the US - has been released from prison after more than 20 years in custody.

The 65-year-old spent almost two decades spying for Cuba while employed as an analyst at the Defence Intelligence Agency.

After her arrest in 2001, officials said she had almost entirely exposed US intelligence operations on the island.

One official said she was among "the most damaging spies" caught by the US.

Michelle Van Cleave, who was head of counter-intelligence under President George W Bush, told Congress in 2012 that Montes had "compromised everything - virtually everything - that we knew about Cuba and how we operated in Cuba".

"So the Cubans were well aware of everything that we knew about them and could use that to their advantage. In addition, she was able to influence estimates about Cuba in her conversations with colleagues and she also found an opportunity to provide information that she acquired to other powers."

Jacob Brown's neat finish and two own goals sent Stoke City through to the fourth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Hartlepool United.

Euan Murray hammered the ball into the roof of his own net after Josh Tymon's incisive early run and low delivery.

Brown doubled the Championship side's lead, skipping past goalkeeper Ben Killip to roll in from a tight angle.

Rollin Menayese found his own net from Harry Clarke's cross as Stoke set up a home tie with Aston Villa or Stevenage.
