The renowned Japanese composer and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto, admired for his electronic music experimentation, has died aged 71.

He won awards - including an Oscar, a Grammy and Bafta - for his work as a solo artist and as a member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO).

Sakamoto had been diagnosed with cancer for a second time in 2021. His office said he died on Tuesday.

He starred in the film Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence with David Bowie in 1983.

His film score for The Last Emperor, in 1987, won him an Oscar, a Grammy and a Golden Globe. He also acted in the movie, an epic about the life of Puyi, last emperor of China.

Sakamoto began studying composition at the age of 10 and was inspired by the Beatles and Debussy.

He set up YMO with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi in 1978, playing keyboards, and their synthesizer innovations influenced techno-pop and hip-hop.

"Asian music heavily influenced Debussy, and Debussy heavily influenced me. So the music goes around the world and comes full circle," he said in 2010.

Prof Brian Cox, physicist and former keyboard player with the bands Dare and D:Ream, praised Sakamoto in a tweet: "He was a big part of my '80s musical experience - initially for me through his work with David Sylvian and Japan - but of course he leaves a magnificent catalogue of music behind".

Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels. Palm Sunday comes from the fact that it honors Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, where the people carried palm branches. It can also be referred to as Passion Sunday, because the Gospel narrative of the Passion of Jesus is read during the liturgical celebrations. Palm Sunday marks the first day of Holy Week, which is the last week of the Christian solemn season of Lent, preceding Eastertide.

In most Christian rites, Palm Sunday is celebrated by the blessing and distribution of palm branches (or the branches of other native trees), representing the palm branches which the crowd scattered in front of Christ as he rode into Jerusalem. These palms are sometimes woven into crosses. The difficulty of procuring palms in unfavorable climates led to their substitution with branches of native trees, including box, olive, willow, and yew. The Sunday was often named after these substitute trees, as in Yew Sunday, or by the general term Branch Sunday. In Syriac Christianity it is often called Oshana Sunday or Hosanna Sunday based on the biblical words uttered by the crowd while Jesus entered Jerusalem.

Many churches of mainstream Christian denominations, including the Orthodox, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican, Moravian and Reformed traditions, distribute palm branches to their congregations during their Palm Sunday liturgies. Catholic Christians have a Mass following the blessings of the palms. Many Christians take these palms, which are often blessed by clergy, to their homes where they hang them alongside Christian art (especially crosses and crucifixes) or keep them in their Bibles and daily devotional books. In the period preceding the next year's Lent, known as Shrovetide, churches often place a basket in their narthex to collect these palms, which are then ritually burned on Shrove Tuesday to make the ashes to be used on the following day, Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent.

Finnish conservative leader Petteri Orpo has won a nail-biting three-way election race, defeating Prime Minister Sanna Marin's centre left.

"We got the biggest mandate," said the leader of the National Coalition Party, after a dramatic night in which the result gradually swung away from Ms Marin's Social Democrats.

Mr Orpo secured 20.8% of the vote, ahead of the right-wing populist Finns Party and the centre left.

The populists won a record 20.1%.

It is a bitter defeat for Ms Marin, who increased her party's seats and secured 19.9% of the vote.

She continues to enjoy high poll ratings and has been widely praised for steering Finland towards imminent entry into Nato and navigating her country through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Shortly after the conservative leader claimed victory, the centre-left leader conceded the election.

"Congratulations to the winner of the elections, congratulations to the National Coalition Party, congratulations to the Finns Party. Democracy has spoken," she told supporters.

For weeks the three parties had been almost level in the polls, and as the results came in it became too close to call. Then a projection from public broadcaster YLE gave Petteri Orpo's National Coalition victory with the biggest number of seats in parliament.

posted on 3/4/23

"I think Finnish people want change. They want change and now I will start negotiations, open negotiations with all parties," he said.

There was a mood of euphoria in the camp, said Matti Koivisto, political correspondent with public broadcaster YLE. "When they saw the projection, it was quite clear they were going to win."

Finns Party leader Riikka Purra congratulated her centre-right rival and was herself delighted with the best result in her party's history.

"We're still challenging to be number one, but seven more seats is an excellent result."

WWE and the owners of mixed martial arts franchise UFC are to form a new £17.3bn sports entertainment brand.

The publicly traded company will see UFC owners Endeavor Group Holdings taking a 51% controlling interest, and existing WWE shareholders 49%.

The business will be led by Endeavor chief executive Ari Emanuel.

WWE executive chairman Vince McMahon will fill the same role at the company, with Dana White remaining Ultimate Fighting Championship president.

McMahon retired last year following misconduct claims but returned to the WWE board in January and suggested the company could be for sale.

"This is a rare opportunity to create a global live sports and entertainment pureplay built for where the industry is headed," said Emanuel.

"For decades, Vince and his team have demonstrated an incredible track record of innovation and shareholder value creation, and we are confident that Endeavor can deliver significant additional value for shareholders by bringing UFC and WWE together."

WWE has a global reach and fanbase, which includes a wide age demographic and range of incomes.

The company had more than 16 billion social media video views in the final quarter of 2022. It has nearly 94 million YouTube subscribers and has more than 20 million followers on TikTok.

Five of its female wrestlers are in the world's top 15 most-followed female athletes across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, led by former UFC fighter Ronda Rousey with 36.1 million followers.

Television coverage of the English Football League is set to stay on Sky Sports after it was named as the preferred bidder for 2024 onwards.

Reports had suggested streaming platform DAZN wanted to show every game live, ending the Saturday 3pm blackout.

The EFL said it had completed a "full and comprehensive review" of invitation to tender bids.

It added it would now enter into an exclusive month-long negotiating period with Sky.

The previous five-year broadcast deal, worth £595m, was signed in 2018 and allows Sky to show at least 138 league matches a season as well as every play-off game and the Carabao Cup final.

The broadcaster also screens matches in the earlier rounds of the EFL Cup and the semi-finals and final of the EFL Trophy.

The TV blackout for Saturday 3pm kick-offs in the UK dates back to the 1960s and was designed to protect lower-league attendances.

Former Conservative chancellor Nigel Lawson has died at the age of 91.

Best known for his role as chancellor during the 1980s, Lord Lawson held several cabinet posts under Margaret Thatcher and served as Conservative MP for Blaby from 1974 to 1992.

PM Rishi Sunak called Lord Lawson a "transformational chancellor and an inspiration to me and many others".

Lord Lawson is survived by six children, including Nigella Lawson, a food writer and celebrity cook.

The prime minister posted a picture of himself as chancellor with the caption: "One of the first things I did as Chancellor was hang a picture of Nigel Lawson above my desk.

"My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time," Mr Sunak added.

Former prime minister Boris Johnson paid tribute to Lord Lawson, calling him "a fearless and original flame of free market Conservatism".

In a series of tweets Mr Johnson praised him as "a tax-cutter and simplifier who helped transform the economic landscape and helped millions of British people achieve their dreams.

"He was a prophet of Brexit and a lover of continental Europe. He was a giant. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Reading have been deducted six points by the English Football League for breaching the terms of an agreed business plan for a previous profit and sustainability rule breach.

It marks the first decision handed down by the independent club financial reporting unit (CFRU).

The deduction leaves Reading 20th in the Championship, with 40 points, one above the relegation zone.

Manager Paul Ince said last week he thought the punishment was coming.

In addition, Reading have agreed a new budget with the CFRU, which will be finalised once the club's full profit and sustainability review has been completed for the current season.

The club accepted they had not "sufficiently satisfied" elements of the planned budget.
