More than 10,000 square miles of the North Atlantic have been searched so far, according to the US Coast Guard. Reports that regular 'tapping sounds' were picked up by sonar on Tuesday, providing fresh hope that the occupants are alive and Titan might yet be found. But oxygen on the vessel is expected to run out at Midday today with a 'miracle' now needed in the race against time. One scenario feared by experts however is that electrical power may have already been lost, which if the case, could have already proved fatal for the five. Dr Ken Ledez, the medical director of hyperbaric medicine at Memorial University in St John's, Newfoundland, said electrical power would likely help control the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the vessel. He told BBC News that without power, as oxygen level falls, the proportion of carbon dioxide being breathed out by the crew will be rising. 'As levels of carbon dioxide build up, then it becomes sedative, it becomes like an anaesthetic gas, and you will go to sleep,' he said.

Swansea City have named Barnsley's Michael Duff as their new head coach.

The Championship club had lined up the former Northern Ireland and Burnley defender as a successor to Russell Martin, who has joined Southampton.

Duff, who won the League Two title with Cheltenham in 2021, led Barnsley to the League One play-off final last month.

The 45-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Swansea, who have had to pay compensation to the Tykes for his services.

"Michael has a proven track record of galvanising a group of players into a collective unit, and he has consistently outperformed expectations at his previous clubs," said Swansea chairman Andy Coleman.

"Every conversation I had with him only reinforced the view that he is exactly the type of leader we need here at Swansea City.

"He is a proven winner, both as a player and as a manager, and I'm confident he will bring that mentality here.

"I believe in his ability and his belief in the Swansea way, while he also possesses the capability to adapt within games to drive results.

"This is a results-driven business. Our position in the table matters to all of us and we are focused on supporting Michael with everything he needs to succeed."

The club say an update regarding Duff's coaching staff will follow in due course.

Dingo bites tourist sunbathing in Australia

New video shows the moment a French woman was attacked by a dingo at a beach in K’gari, Australia.

The Queensland Department of Environment and Science says the animal was "humanely euthanised" after being involved in a number of "high-risk" incidents.

K'gari Island in Queensland is home to some 200 wild dingoes. There are strict rules against feeding them with heavy fines for offenders. Another dingo was euthanised earlier this month after months of attacks on the island.

Shoppers have been splashing out on new outfits and other items for enjoying the summer weather, boosting sales overall, latest retail figures show.

After the sun came out in the second half of May, sales volumes rose by a stronger than expected 0.3%, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

Online retailers and garden centres did particularly well, the ONS said.

Fuel sales also rose compared to April, but people bought less food as prices continued to rise.

"Retail sales grew a little in May, with online shops doing particularly well selling outdoor goods and summer clothes, as the sun began to shine," Heather Bovill, senior statistician at the ONS said.

"Garden centres and DIY stores also saw growth, as the good weather encouraged people to start home and garden improvements."

Food sales fell 0.5% in May. As well as price pressures, that could be due to the extra bank holiday last month, the ONS said, as more people ordered takeaways or went to the pub.

Overall consumers are still buying slightly less than they were before the pandemic. But because prices have risen, they are spending significantly more in total.

Titanic director: 'OceanGate were warned'

Former Liverpool and Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez is returning to management after being named Celta Vigo boss.

The 63-year-old Spaniard has been out of the game since being sacked by Everton in January 2022.

Benitez, who also had a spell as interim boss at Chelsea, has agreed a three-year-deal at the La Liga club.

He replaces Carlos Carvalhal, who left at the end of the season after helping Celta avoid relegation.

Celta finished three points above the drop zone in 13th place, having beaten champions Barcelona on the final day to guarantee safety.

The club said former Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Napoli manager Benitez "has extensive experience on the bench with a career that is difficult to match".

Benitez won the 2005 Champions League and 2006 FA Cup with Liverpool and the 2013 Europa League during his interim spell at Chelsea. He also guided Newcastle to promotion from the Championship.
