Shinzo Abe (21 September 1954 – 8 July 2022) was a Japanese politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. He was the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history, serving for almost nine years in total. Abe also served as Chief Cabinet Secretary from 2005 to 2006 under Junichiro Koizumi and was briefly the opposition leader in 2012.
Abe was assassinated on 8 July 2022 while delivering a campaign speech in Nara two days before the 10 July upper house elections. The suspect, who was immediately arrested by police, confessed to targeting the former prime minister because of Abe's reported ties with the Unification Church. This was the first assassination of a former Japanese prime minister since 1936. A polarizing figure in Japanese politics, Abe was described by his supporters as having worked to strengthen Japan's security and international stature, while his opponents described his nationalistic policies and negationist views on history as threatening Japanese pacifism and damaging relations with East Asian neighbors China and South Korea. Commentators have said that his legacy pushed Japan towards more proactive military spending, security, and economic policies.
Almost 30 years ago Ian Watkins, better known to many as H from Steps, was all set to become a painter.
At the age of 18 he was accepted at Cardiff School of Art and Design but decided to defer his place to "dip his toe" into the world of performance. As they say, the rest is history.
Steps' debut single, 5,6,7,8, was released in 1997, kicking off more than 25 years of hits including Tragedy, One for Sorrow and Last Thing On My Mind.
"I packed up my artistic dreams in a box and put it on the top shelf," said Ian.
"I always knew I would open it up one day. And now's that time."

Fifa has lifted its suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) and has set up a temporary committee to operate the organisation for a year.
The decision of world football's governing body means that Zimbabwe will be in Wednesday's draw for the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
"I want to assure Zimbabwe that you have the complete support of Fifa and of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) in ensuring that Zimbabwean football reaches the heights we've all desired," Solomon Mudege, Fifa's head of development in Africa, said at a news conference in Harare on Tuesday.
Zimbabwe was barred by Fifa in February 2022 after the country's government-appointed Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) suspended Zifa.
Fifa outlaws third-party interference in the running of a football association.
As result, Zimbabwe were excluded from the qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2024 Women's Afcon, among other competitions, and Zifa had its Fifa funding frozen.
The reasons for the SRC's intervention included alleged sexual harassment of female referees by Zifa technical staff as well as allegations of fraud within Zimbabwean football's governing body.
In September 2022, Fifa suspended former Zifa official Obert Zhoya for five years after adjudging him to have sexually harassed three female referees.
The newly-formed normalisation committee has been mandated to complete its duties by 30 June 2024. It will restructure Zifa, review its statutes and organise elections for a new board.
The committee will also ensure a proper financial handover to the new Zifa board and has been asked to establish a collaboration agreement between the SRC and Zifa to address issues of sexual harassment.
