Why don't you address the people specifically who you think are fickle instead of saying "we" as if you're talking about all United fans.
And to address the topic, I'm a big fan of Cleverley's and Welbeck's for that matter.
I think they both certainly have what it takes to make a good name for themselves at this club but they both need a good run in the team. Cleverley needs a full season behind him and Welbeck needs to be played in the proper position.
I've watched every game that Cleverley has played since the Olympics including Internationals and I count probably about 3-4 possibly 5 games that Cleverley hasn't impressed me in. I think he was progressing nicely but lately, he hasn't featured much for some reason (only started 3 out of our last 8 games which is quite bewildering) and I think it showed against West Ham last Wednesday where he looked a little bit rusty.
Cleverley is someone we need to build the team around, the same goes for Kagawa. He's very tidy in possession, energetic, always available for a pass, enables us to play a progressive style of football and given time and more games could really start to influence things in the final 3rd when he starts getting more used to playing with RVP, Rooney and even Welbeck who in training seems to almost have a telepathic understanding with Cleverley according to Rio and when I've seen the two play together, they've looked great together.
I agree with the grass is greener comment, the two players that seem to crop up most in the "we should sign him" conversations are Fellani who i think is brilliant for Everton because they play to his strengths and Sneijder who had a brilliant 2010 but hasn't done much of note during the rest of his career and he's 26-27, we also have players who play in similar positions who are better than him.
It's not a new phenomenon amongst some (i stress the word some btw) United fans, i remember about 10 years ago it was revealed that we could have signed Edgar Davids when he was at Ajax and some people were bemoaning the fact we didn't, conveniently forgetting that we had Ince and Keane, then Keane and Scholes as our midfield pairings, which didn't work out to badly for us during the 90's.
I used "We" because fans tend to be fickle. This doesn't mean everyone, though I did generalise. - can't comment more at the moment, as I'm a little busy.
I agree with you totally. The comments baffle me as well. When I see people say Di Maria, Robben and Ribery are the best wingers in the world. It makes me laugh. They hype playerswho they rarely see and are quick to put ours down.
Some even believe we would get thrashed by dortmund forgetting that Arsenal beat them with ease.
I'm quite pleased with our squad apart from the pensioners and we have some truly excellent young players that will go on to be superstars.
Sadly some within the fanbase can't see it
its the nature of the beast, the more fans you have the more fans you have moaning.

Do you realise how consistent these 3 are and how many goals and assists they contribute season after season?
There has been hardly any talk of Eirksen (who i personally think is totally overrated) and a little of strootman.
I think Cleverly is and will be a good player, not a real big fan of Welbeck if I am being honest.

==============
Please elaborate, starting with Di Maria and his marvelous contributions this season
Di Maria has played 22 games this season, scored 4 and assisted 7. Scoring or assisting every other game on average....not amazing but not bad either.....
Not saying he is a bad player or an average one. He's a decent player and not even the best winger at Madrid
100% agree, if if Tom was called 'Tomas Kleverheisen' and played for Dortmund all our fans would think he was World Class. Our players are underestimated so much by some of our fans I feel like getting double barrell out.
Cleverley is a superb player btw and I've no idea why he's not starting right now
well i guess that depends on whether you count Ronaldo as a winger or not.
But I personally rate Di Maria, robben and Ribery (on fire this season). As up there, as some of the best wingers in the world.
Consistently they are good.
on his day nani is better than all 3 put together.
I hate ribery and di maria, fking pansies

Thanks mate, you've captured my point perfectly. They are definitely up there but not the best.
Another one who is overrated is Sanchez
Which of our wingers have a better return than di Maria this season? Or last for that matter?
As for Ribery last season he got 26 assists and fifteen goals. None of our wingers got remotely close to that sort of return. This season 9 assists and five goals in 17 games. Once again none of our wingers are have been that productive.
And robben assists stats I can't bring up ATM but he bagged 19 goals so even if he only assisted five he still was far more productive than any of ours. Had bad luck again with injuries again this year so not been that good. By when fit and firing he is world class.
You chose 3 very stupid examples.

So Real Madrid have a couple of players better than ours. Not exactly something to get us reaching for the razorblades.
But we're top of our league and they're 11 points behind in theirs.
I know which position i'd prefer to be in.
Without question Ribery is the best out and out winger in the world. Ronaldos a left forward.

That's a really stupid statement to make. he isn't even the best winger in Bayern.
Bringing up his achievements in Germany is also stupid as their league is weaker than the prem and Spain.

Rubbish. What do you base that on exactly? And yes he is the best winger at bayern.
Stretty
I don't think anyone is trying to say that Young is better than Ronaldo or Di Maria but just because our wingers aren't the best in the world doesn't mean they're rubbish.
Just that there is a middle ground and we shouldn't just be like 'he's garbage, he's garbage, and oh yeah, he's garbage'.
Rubbish. What do you base that on exactly? And yes he is the best winger at bayern.
