The Alien complaint was upheld
The Jaws complained was, errr, declined
"I guess for gore it's not that much worse than Raiders of the Lost Ark really, but it does have that horror/thriller aspect throughout which maybe makes it more suitable for adults."
The problem the UK had in those times was that there was nothing between A and AA.
In dem days, profane language, sexual references, or vicious violence, would be enough to get a A film an AA rating.
Raiders was given an A rating in general.
I think it would have got an A without the "opening of the ark" scene anyway.
But I recall a "parental guidance" note went out in the press etc to warn about that scene.
Aliens is not horror.
Apart from the chest-burster reprise, it does not have the violence of the original.
So A was like 15 and AA 18? I always thought Raiders was a PG that's why I used it as an example. I guess it is now mind you, same with Jaws.
Great films whatever their certs.
Old ratings :
U = care bears stuff.
A = not for all kids (parental discretion suggested)
AA = 14 yrs old
X = 18 yrs old
So with that in mind, figure out what level of "parental discretion" was needed for Jaws.
Oh yes I forgot X.
Seem reasonable ratings to me then but I'm from a more desensitised generation, and back then those would have been more shocking.
Looking at them now; Jaws, Raiders, Alien, there isn't a whole lot of difference in the gore. Only in tone, esp. for Alien should their certs be different.
X = phooooooaaaaawwwwrrrrrrr
hang about - temple of doom's much scarier than the lost ark (except for that one scene).
Temple was a bit darker you're right. Weakest of the trilogy though.
Anyone notice how I shut Blueblood up ?

typical.
i post a great article like this, and it turns out to be match day
To liven things up, I have added marks to all films of a 17/20 standard or higher.
As can be seen, the thriller and action genres come out way ahead of their rivals.
In contrast, war and comedy drama fail to score a single 17+ film between them.
No black and white allowed?
- The Third Man
- Citizen Kane
- North by Northwest
- Brighton Rock
- Vertigo
- Spellbound
- Kind Hearts and Coronets
- The Great Dictator
(Among many others...)
Colour:
- Battle Royale (Japanese)
- Infernal Affairs (Hong Kong) originals are far superior to The Departed 'remake' imo.
- A Clockwork Orange
- Life of Brian
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Most of Kubrick's stuff is better than what's on that list, in my opinion - absolute genius. I'd include Eyes Wide Shut in that personally, although somewhat controversial, after 'the master' conveniently died after his final edit, which was then torn to pieces by the studio.
- Brain Dead, Meet the Feebles by Peter Jackson also way ahead of most of that stuff
- Evil Dead 2
- The Godfather (maybe I missed it?) Prefer it to 2 personally
- The Killing Fields
Just off the top of my head
brain dead isnt ahead of anything
btw, rope's black and white isnt it ? the charlie chaplin film certainly is.
Pretty sure Rope is in colour

In your opinion. In mine it's the ultimate gore-spoof film ever.
I thought this was all about opinions? And discussion?
Obviously it's not in your opinion. Fair enough. What about the other films I mentioned?
I forgot another - Chinatown. What did you think of that?
