mbappe99 still thinks smashing through balls through the defence onto pacy strikers is the way to go

We have no wingers. It's obviously the way we will play.

Why wouldn't they need to?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Essentially Lacazette and Aubameyang like the ball to feet or in space. We were moving away from the focal striker build up even under Wenger. In those cases crossing from wide issued more as a surprise tactic rather than a style of play that the opposition need to defend. So when teams set up to play against Man City, for example, they don't expect crosses coming into the penalty area for small Jesus, Augero to head. Therefore when it does happen the crossing doesn't need to be that accurate because the opposition isn't really defending it. On the other hand Man Utd/Chelsea use heading goals as a far greater tactic so opposing teams setup to mark Lukaku/Morata far closer. Therefore the wide players have to be much better to find Lukaku/Morata with a cross compared to a Man City wide player.

Exactly this. Which is why Emery has decided to play to the strengths of the team rather than impose a focus point attack with average wingers (or rather AMFs forced to play as wingers) just in the off chance they'll get in a decent cross.
I like Emery's thinking already, tbh. A lot more thought into the team setup than Wenger's good old "Just express yourselves lads" way of playing.
Crossing doesn't need to be in the air for a target man, there's lots of different variants of it

Yeah we're specialists of that tbh. I particularly like Bellerins "Fail to beat the first man" approach in crossing.

In fact its why Mikhi failed at Man Utd. He is not a wide player in the old wing play style.
I would say its actually very hard to find those type of wide players in the modern game. You will find wingers who can cross but can't go past a player so they end up as full backs where they have issues to defend. This is why some teams go 5 at the back, like Chelsea or even Spurs, where you can accommodate players like that. I am surprised Man Utd haven't gone with 3 CBs.

Two different things. Bellerin etc provide width without issue. Crossing in thew air on the other hand is not a skill they practice much. Its one reason why I always used to wonder why Wenger bought Giroud.
How many times did Henry or even RVP head a ball in? Very very rare.

I agree two players sitting is something that Emery eventually settle on.
Torreira and Maitland-Niles.
I think thats why we are still being linked with N'zonzi.
If Ramsey goes I suspect we will go after a wide player.

Well with Giroud it wouldn't matter. He never had the pace to get across a defender if he was being marked. And because he was a threat in the air he was always going to be marked. In fact Giroud did better than Podolski at the very beginning of his career at Arsenal because teams were still setting up like they were playing against RVP.
One thing that annoyed me last season was that we now had strikers like Lacazette and Auba who could get across a defender, or make a run to the near post or find space in the pen area with late runs but we were still playing like Giroud was starting for us.
Giroud did pretty well from crosses whipped in low across the face of goal, that's why Walcott was useful
