But no, we had to make a sale to sign Partey or Aouar. And no one was making decent offers for any of our other players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not to flog a dead horse but why do you think that?

1) We paid £45m up front for Partey. So we had plenty of money and didn't need to sell to buy.

2) Had we kept both the players we would have actually got more for Leno this summer.

The fact is Emi only had a season left and wanted assurances he would be first choice before he signed an extension. Those never came because Arteta was not sure of either goalkeeper so Arsenal sold him.

Simple situation of poor judgement by the manager. Something he has corrected by buying Ramsdale.

‘We paid £45m up front for Partey. So we had plenty of money and didn't need to sell to buy.’

We wanted both, but could only afford to sign one, so I’m not sure where the notion we had plenty of money comes from. Especially as the general consensus was we needed to raise funds towards Partey’s fee.

And, don’t get me wrong, I really like Partey, but I’m under no illusions he was very much 2nd choice to Aouar - despite them being very different players.

Had Arteta been given £150m last summer instead of this, I’m convinced we don’t sign Willian. Also that we keep both keepers.

Turned out to be a poor decision to sell Emi, I agree. However, at the time he’d been in the team a matter of months. I’m not going to pretend it was obvious at the time. I remember one of the main reasons I wanted him to stay rather than Leno was because he was an ‘Arsenal lad’.

Strange opinion considering no-one waned to buy him.

Emi - “Everyone wanted me to stay, but that’s when I decided to go. I wasn’t upset or emotional, I was proud I did it.
When I arrived at Arsenal, there were nine goalkeepers in front of me. Every year I had to prove myself, but I left as No 1. That was my story done there. The following morning I texted Mikel and told him. I thanked him, I said I won these trophies because of the way he trained, the way he changed the team."

JA606 - "Arteta forced Emi out. Emi wasn't #1 when he left. Emi wanted to stay, his story wasn't done".

Let's move on from Emi, would you say from Arteta's comments that Ramsdale is No. 1 now?

posted on 12/9/21

No, he only gave him a 99.99999999999% chance of starting vs Burnley so I think it is very much up in the air.

What were Artetas comments anyway?

"on Aaron Ramsdale's performance..."
I think he was terrific. It is not only what he did on the technical side, it is what he transmits, his energy, his chemistry with the backline, how he reacts, his body language... I think it was top. We have two fantastic goalkeepers and never forgot what Bernd has done for us and what a good goalkeeper he is. I had to make decisions and I felt Aaron was the right one to do so and like in any other position, and that is what we decided today.

"on whether he plans to rotate the goalkeepers now..."
I want to see how they perform. Now we need performances and we need to win football matches, so whoever gives better performances and whoever transmits more confidence and is more reliable will play.

But it was shown to be a false narrative. We could have bought both if we wanted. The reason why I emphasised the £45m up front money is because most clubs, incl Arsenal make part payments for transfers. However when you trigger a buy-out clause you have to deposit the entire amount in escrow to Liga. The money is then transferred in its entirety to the club and the registration transferred to the buying club. So money was available last season as well.

We did not need to sell Emi or Leno to fund transfers.

How is it strange? The more people see Leno the more they did not want him.

His reputation was far better when he was injured.

posted on 12/9/21

It is strange because there was no real interest in him from the level of club who he would go to, or who would pay a fee greater than the Emi fee, or who would give him the wages he is on.
Plus he would be moving into the 2 years left scenario.

It is amazing Arsenal fans can watch how hard it is to move our players on, yet still think we can sell outcasted players for big fees.

posted on 12/9/21

Okay, a few things here.

Firstly, thanks for explaining, but I already knew how the Partey buy out clause affected payment of his fee.

Secondly, if we could afford both, why did we wait until Aouar, or his agent, and then Lyon (when we’d, by then, left it too late) finally made their decision before moving for Partey on TDD?

Finally, if you believe we didn’t need to sell to buy last summer, especially after half a season played behind closed doors, you’re crazy.

It most certainly has not proven to be a false narrative.

The only reason KSE have ‘invested’ money this summer is due to favourable interest rates. The signings we’ve made also aren’t purely based on future resale values either. They will have drastically lowered our wage bill too.

In the long term this £150m will be ‘paid back’ one way or another.

Absolute garbage comment tbh.

Brighton vs Arsenal.

Maupay makes snide challenge on Leno, forcing the Arsenal keeper off injured.

Gooners: ‘Nice one, Neal. FINALLY we’re going to see Emi Martinez given his chance!

Search the internet and you will come up blank.

Reason being.

It never happened.

Anywhere.

What makes you think Arsenal made Leno available at the time when they were trying to sell Emi because he was refusing to sign an extension because Arteta did not give him assurances of starting for Arsenal?

I think its really stupid to suggest to there was no interest for some one who was not for sale.

Its true actually. Leno was still talked of as a future German International season before last season when he was injured. His reputation only took a dive last season.
