Tbh if he's doing that well, unless Arsenal are Cl regulars by then, I'd imagine the plan is to sell him.

But then we'd surely only get what we're looking for if he's on reasonable wages, surely?

Unless he is outperforming his contract and the rest are looking rubbish. And then there is inflation. He wants to leave or he is demanding to run down his contract, contract clauses etc. So converting his balance sheet value to future wages for himself.

Look at Kane. Has load of years left on his contract. Knows he is worth £150m. So is demanding £400k a week to stay at Spurs. Even though he has years left probably on half the wages he is on now. And you get a stand off.
