How did we play against Juve?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Totally dominated, beaten by two own goals at the end of each half.
Had two goals disallowed - both Eddie Nketiah. The first one for offside despite the Juve defender playing the ball to him, the second for - according to PP as I was watching on Italian TV - because the ref stopped the game for an injury even though that happened milliseconds before Eddie netted 🙄
Eddie should have netted after a keeper howler, but hit the post in our best chance.

Reiss Nelson started off very lively, and paid with his hamstring going. Vieira was very bright, especially first half. Marquinhos struggled as Nelsons replacement, but Cozy Dubs and Nwaneri both looked good in their short cameos.
Holding was shiiite, Partey dominated, Xhaka didn't play well, Ode was okay, Tierney was decent, White, Gabriel and Ramsdale did alright.

So, Southgate staying as England manager at least until the Euro. How you guys feel about it?

I don't actually mind Southgate as much as some people do. And if the FA are looking to have an English manager manage the national team... I can't think of any obvious alternatives to him at the moment (assuming Chelsea don't pull the trigger on Potter anytime soon).

I guess Ben White can kiss his England career goodbye though.

Arteta pretty much confirmed Saka and Martinelli will start against West Ham. Tomi, Zinny and ESR less likely to be involved, but not totally ruled out (can't see ESR playing for a bit though, maybe Oxford?)

They were targeting Boxing Day for ESR's return.

I've missed quite a bit of footy this year, including footy news. What's up between White and Southgate?

MA: Emile Smith Rowe hasn’t started to train yet. Hopefully he can start next week. We really need him.

Zinchenko is doing well, Tomiyasu has started running

Not so much White and Southgate but more to do with White and Holland. Apparently White is a bit dim and doesn't like doing film study that is an important part of training and build up these days. Analytics taking over sport.

Thats the problem that Southgate has to solve. He needs two fast CBs who can push up and compress space. I suppose you can only go so far with antiquated counter attack tactics.

Was Zinchenko always this much of a sicknote? Guy's done well when he's played, but seems to miss more matches than he plays.

No he didn't. He said the article used the word "alleged" and there was no credibility to it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually he did confirm it with his 'non denial'. Obviously some journos were briefed by players and he could hardly lie. So he did the next best thing.

“Well, not really. What I’ve been shown was alleged and there was another word that was used.

“I think by commenting on the story I could be giving it any form of credibility, really. We explained why Ben left the camp and I think it’s important that that is respected, really.”

One reason why players like Southgate is because he tries to protect their reputation. And thats what tried to do with Ben. If there was nothing to it he would have said the incident between Ben White and Holland did not happen. But he did not do that.

Frankly its a non story if thats all that it was. Ben White is young and is still maturing. So he'll be back for England soon enough. Its hardly career ending to go over the top with Steve Holland. Especially when England lack top quality CBs like Ben White!

No he refused to comment on it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because commenting on it gives it credibility...

posted on 18/12/22

yes and what does not commenting on it do? Southgate is not going to lie! Its the usual 'non denial' denial used in political speak.

posted on 18/12/22

yes and what does not commenting on it do?
=====
Takes away its credibility.

posted on 18/12/22

No it doesn't! It leaves it up in the air. Had he just said it did not happen would have killed it on the spot.

posted on 18/12/22

Would it? Or would you just accuse him of covering it up?
