Nothing to be ashamed of. Vize-Weltmeister this time. Not too bad with all the hindrances they had to face.

By hindrances, you mean the FIFA corruption, right?

What examples do you have of FIFA corruption to stop France winning

That was never a penalty on Di Maria. He was already on his way down prior to any contact.

Who are the next generation to come though? Any talented young English CB in the pipeline?

Shockingly poor. Ben White and Tomori. Thats it imo.

Was Tomori in this WC squad? He is already 25.

As Lex said, I think White can forget his international career as long as Southgate is in charge.

We have a lot of decent young defenders though none stand out as the next Sol/Terry/Ferdinand/King right now

Maguire, Stones and Dier all have another tournament or two in them

More worried about striker... Maybe with all the talent we have in wide forwards n number 10 it won't matter too much but the like of Tammy, Toney, Watkins are a clear step down

Not really. Keeping clean sheets isn't the problem. It's scoring enough goals against quality opposition IMO.

You can't rely dissociate the two though. Maybe the coach would have taken more risks and push forward if he had Campbell/Ferdinand type of players instead of Maguire who has the turning circle of Jupiter.

Southgate has a blind spot in that he is too loyal. Thats helped when it came to Saka when media departments/fans were bent on making others sound better than him. However it hurts England when it comes to players who are older and now a bit naff. Tomori was arguably the best CB when he played in warm up games and Ben White has been outstanding since he joined Arsenal and offers great deal of flexibility. Which makes him ideal in bringing the ball out of defence into midfield. This is why I've been bleating on about Saliba/White future partnership for a while now. If Arsenal win the league or at least be back in the CL consistently will it make it hard for Southgate to leave him out.

I think we will suffer as long as England are unable to push up from the back and compress space. See how good the Argies were the entire tournament by doing that and so dominating midfield. So if Southgate fails in the Euros he is out anyway.

Naaah. I get your point but Southgate wouldn't set the team up any different IMO. This is his style. He's got some of the best attackers in the world and still sets up defensively.
