Not happy with Merino.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think he's a sensible signing albeit not a 'fancy' one. He reminds me of a more mobile version of Xhaka. He's a good duel winner, retains possession well and can play defence-splitting passes from deep.
With Nwaneri also coming through, I do wonder if he's a short-term signing so that we eventually blood through Nwaneri into the first team over the next couple years. Wouldn't surprise me if he's a squad player in a few years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think he's being brought in as a squad player, rather than a starter.
The only game I've seen him in was the group stage dead-rubber at the Euros, which wasn't much to go on.
The AV guys have scouted him though, and his progressive passing isn't a strong point, apparently. Great ball winner though, as you say.
Does make me wonder whether the idea is to have him as an Elneny match closer type - though one Arteta will have the confidence to actually use - rather than a partner for Rice.
Maybe he won't be the only MF signed by us this summer?
I want to see how South Sudan do again in Basketball as they nearly beat the US in a warm up game. I doubt they will come close again
Did anyone see Chelsea's highlights though?

I suppose we'll see, but there's plenty of games this season for him to get minutes. I also think, given Partey's slight decline and unreliability with fitness, it's a welcome addition to the team.
It's interesting you say progressive passing isn't his strong point because most of the analysis I've seen of him highlights that his game is about ball progression but in a 'controlled' way. I haven't seen a lot of underlying numbers though, so I can't comment from a statistical perspective.
Fabrizio said we have a few midfield targets in mind, so I wouldn't be totally surprised if we do bring in one more in the middle. But it may depend on another player leaving after ESR.
I thought the opening ceremony of the olympic games was sensational and difficult for the next olympic organisation to top. Absolute wonderful show.
Thanks for that Mark Kermode
