Doubt Real Sociedad would be willing to lose BOTH Zubimendi and Merino in the same transfer window. If we wanted Merino, we should have closed it out before Liverpool got serious about Zubimendi.

Not sure Merino is the answer to our chase for an 8 either. Not watched much of him, but it's strange that his pass completion every single La Liga season for Sociedad is always in the 70's. Which suggests he's a tad sloppy on the ball - not an attribute you typically associate with Spanish midfielders. Expected he'd compensate for that with his creative output in the final 3rd (maybe he loses the ball a lot cos his passing is ambitious), but he seems to be a workhorse mostly. If we wanted a workhorse, might as well have gone for Conor Gallagher.

The guy's also 28 - older than I expected. Which means he'd finish his contract here in his 30's and leave for nothing.

I think that might be the plan cos we can't sell Partey. Sell ESR instead and bring in Merino for cheap and then all being well in a couple of years Ethan can take that role after being groomed for it. Then we sort the DM replacement next year.

That Merino guy looks average/decent at best. Seems like a squad addition at best, don’t see how he improves the starting XI or is even an upgrade on Jorgi

Zubimendi on the other hand looks decent and would be an ideal partner for Rice in midfield imo

Zubimendi is not left footed. Think Arteta is keen on a left footed player to play the "Xhaka" role and Merino fits that. But I agree he is 28 and not that good
