I'm very much like you in that respect. I was a massive Rooney fan and still am to a certain extent but agree that this summer is key.

We either get him to sign a new contract and hope he keeps a decent level of performance up over the next 5 seasons or sell him while we still can.

But have we seen the best of him? - Yes

His touch isn't there anymore - Agreed

He has lost a yard of pace and he is giving the ball away more and more each game. - Painful viewing sometimes, isn't it?

Fergie was hardly going to come out and say "Yes, Wayne is leaving us in the summer" was he? - No.

How would everyone feel if they left in summer and joined PSG, Bayern or somebody like that? - Ok, if we got someone like Gotze to replace him, and added a commanding box-to-box midfielder (can't think of any)... Maybe Fellaini?

when he's bad..he's bad... when he's good... he's a genius.

Tough call.

It's such a hard decision Fergie has to make.

He's been a truly great player for us but I don't think he's the same player he was 3 or 4 years ago. He's definitely not going to get any better now.

I think if an offer of around £30m came in, and not from a PL rival, we'd have to take it.

I'd love it if we could bring in a Gotze or an Isco in his place too with the cash raised. Or Ronaldo if we're being silly and dreaming.

I saw one poster on a website suggest this deal. He was half joking but it did intrigue me.

Rooney for Wilshere. It solves one of our problems and solves one of Arsenal's.

No. Not in five trillion years. NEVER.....

Not with ten thousand men could we do this. It is folly!

Hey, Wilshere is the real deal and in 2 or 3 years we may regret not going for a deal like that.

Ridiculous, we aren't Arsenal. Imagine seeing Rooney in an Arsenal shirt scoring at OT - no fooking way!

Player swaps rarely happen. Especially when they are as high profile as those two. So it's a non starter.

I wouldn't be surprised if Arsenal and even Spurs made offers for him though in summer. We won't and can't sell to Chelsea and City. But maybe we would to one of those two. I don't know.

Seems more likely that he'd be sold abroad though for me.

I was deeply upset about his bust up over a a new deal in 2010 and with what he said about the club and how much he is reportably on.

I can't for the life of me see United giving him even more. It will be a pay cut or he leaves and I reckon the latter is more likely. He isn't worth a pay rise at the moment either.

A bit different that Rob. That's the first time we have played Madrid in 10 years. They aren't in direct competition.

I think this might be Wayne's last season with us because I just can't see United giving him even more money on a new deal and I don't see him accepting a pay cut to stay.

He'll be sold abroad though I reckon. Most people say the langauge barrier will be an issue but most of these teams speak fluent english these days anyway. Most of bayerns, PSG's, Madrid and Barca teams can speak english.

Hilarious. 2 big results do not go our way and your point of view changes? These problems have been mentioned for almost 4 years now, long before the so called drinking rumours and what-nots.

He is not leaving. Fergie will not want to admit his mistakes and more importantly no team who can afford him is stupid enough to sign him. Imagine fans who cannot see past goal tallies and running around souring on a player, let alone foreign managers. If there was an english manager in any of the likely suspects, then maybe but with city, chelsea, psg, et al in mildly smart hands, no one is going to take him off our hands. We are stuck with him, which is not bad, but we can do better. Rooney could have been better.

Redastomatoes

As ever totally missing the point.

Not really anything to do with the two results. He didn't even start one of those games ffs. It's just his demenour and general play that is just not up to scratch.

4 years is a bit too much though. It's not been that long. But he's definitely not getting better that's for sure.

Are we going to offer him a new bumper contract? Can't see it.

Is Rooney likely to accept and reduction in wages? Can't see that either.

Or we likely to let him run down his current deal and leave for peanuts or even nothing? Can't see that option either.

I reckon he may leave this summer. Just my opinion.

I don't think we would need a replacement straight away.

I think Van Persie, Hernandez & Welbeck would be pretty decent. With Kagawa playing further forward where he likes to as well. And there's Zaha who can play there.

We have one or two really talented young forwards too like Will Keane who people talk about at the club as one day possibly emulating Rooney.

I think the money would be much better spent on a world class left winger and Centre mid too. Then our squad would be complete.

Rooney is just about to enter the peak of his career. Ages 27/28 are usually the best years of most peoples careers. No point in selling him yet. As for Wilshere's inclusion in the transfer of Rooney, please stop with the poor jokes.

Get Rooney's fitness sorted out (his genes were always going to catch up with him) and play him in his natural role - in the central midfield area (for those still uninitiated) and we may see the two or three more years necessary from him to lift him to legendary status.

MUFC do, however, need to invest in a proper long term striker. RvP was always a short term risk because of his age. Wellbeck is not good enough for MUFC - by a long way - and although Hernandez is another legend in the making, this will only be from the bench.

I felt last summer that MUFC should have made a move for an unsettled Dzeko. I think he is built for this current squad.

But for goodness sake hang onto Rooney if we can.

How though?

Two years left on his deal. So he is either going to sign a new contract or leave. We won't let him run it down when we could easily get £25-30m for him.

Is Rooney going to ask for even more money with it being his last MAJOR contract? Will United be willing to give him even more money? Or would he accept a reduction to stay on and fight for his position? Doubt that very much.

There's far more to it than just ability. All these things have to be considered too. If the finances don't add up.....he could be sold.

posted on 11/3/13

I wouldn't be happy with United giving him increased terms considering that he has regressed as a player since he signed his last one.

posted on 11/3/13

Agreed, Rooney has been a brilliant servant...
So he hasn't shown the consistency of CR7 or Messi, but we know them two are extraordinary, but Rooneys service has been brilliant nonetheless...

Wouldn't mind seeing him end his career at UTD..
I would be gutted if he left...
The mans a big time asset.

If he goes. It's too someone in England.

Coleen will simply not up root a new born baby too another country. Both her and Wayne are known for liking home comforts.

If he leaves utd people are gonna have to accept its to either city or Chelsea for big money and the only two clubs that can afford his wages. Either that or we have a player on 200k a week picking splinters out of his rear.

He is not gonna go abroad.

Can you imagine him trying to learn Italian or French? Fromae frais, he would be worse than Del Boy.

Exactly my point.

I love Rooney to bits but I just don't see him accepting a worse deal than his current one. And I'd be surprised if United upped their offer at all. He's not earned it.

We might have to reluctantly sell him, so we don't risk losing him for peanuts or nothing because I don't see a new deal happening. A little Similar to the RVP situation last summer.

posted on 11/3/13

The new language thing stopping him going abroad is nonsense though really.

Most of the teams in Europe that might be interested in Rooney have squads that are fluent in English. Bayern, Barca, madrid, PSG......all those teams have fluent english speakers.

I think it would be very incredibly difficult for him to sign for City. Chelsea seems a little more realistic but still a bit far fetched. Arsenal and Spurs.....possibly but they couldn't afford his wages.
