Why we'll be more exciting next season.

Okay, fair enough but how many times this season have you seen United do that. Examples.

...Consider, for example, how different we looked between 2005-6 and 2006-7. The only significant player we added in the summer of 2006 was Carrick, who had a decent debut season for us without absolutely running the midfield. The greatest change was selling our star striker, thus creating the space for the Rooney-Ronaldo-Saha triumvirate to run riot. Other than that, we simply had existing players bedding in (Vidic and Evra) and taking their game to a new level (Ronaldo).

I watch United because I aways have... and always will whilst I can afford it. Thats what supporters do. I have seen thick and thin, believe me. However as a customer I am allowed to grumble occasionally without having to take crap from the likes of you who has no clue about what I am talking about.

You remember a game from 5 years ago where United were poor... and that is your point....ffs!

Part of the reason we have so many idiotic and fickle fans is because of our success. winning is great, dont get me wrong, but..............................

Does that not sound idiotic and spoiled to you??

Nobody is forcing you to go, maybe go to Tottenham instead, their games are exciting

Bottom line is we have a young foreign keeper who is aclimatising, we have had an unsettled CB pairing, a different CM pairing most weeks and wingers who between them have been poor. Im not surprised its not been vintage United this season however winning is the important thing come the end of the season. .

Rob,

where do you stand on the fact we constantly seem to sit deep to teams??

when you look at how we start out you have

DDG
Rafa (1 of best RB's in the league
Evra (one of best LB's in league)
vidic
rio ( 2 of best cb's in league)
carrick (on of best CM in league)
rooney and RVP ( best strike partnership in league)

thats 7 out of 11 players who are regular starter that are either the best, or one of the best in the league in their positions.

if thats the case, why are we often penned back??

to me that suggests negative tactics.

I do think there will be resolution of some of our weak spots this summer.

In midfield I don't believe Fergie will want to rely on a pool of Anderson / Giggs / Fletcher / Scholes (who seems to be de facto retired now) when one of Carrick and Cleverley is unavailable.

The situation on the wings clearly needs to be sorted out too.

What 'crap' am I giving you? I'm just saying that you pay money to go see your team play. You can choose to get upset about 11 grown men kicking a ball around not 'entertaining' you to the required standard without making one complaint about the negative way the opposition set up making it next to impossible for United to blitz them in every game.

I gave that one example because I figured only one example was enough to further the point. I can give 20 examples if you like.

----------

no, to me it sounds like winning isnt the be all and end all.

ive supported utd for 30 years, ive seen players like milne, Donaghy, Webb, giuliano maiorana (remember him?) play for utd.

ive supported them when a decent fa cup run was all we had to llok forward to.

im not spoilt by success, because i went for years without it, so i can appreciate it when its there.

people thought last season was the end of the world, but i didnt.

we came second to a team who had spent hundreds of millions to mount a challenge.
i was more annoyed about how we threw the league away rather than the fact city won it.

Back then there was criticism of our defending but now with 5 clean sheets in a row people are moaning about our boring play

Come on Rob, we're Man United.. We should be winning 4-0 every game. We've lost our way. Past teams, average league, best of a bad bunch etc etc etc

I'm sorry, we've been playing horrible football for years. Not just this season.

What is actually most amusing is the suggestion that we will have a settled side when Sir Alex tinkers with his team and formation for every single game.

I really don't want Nani to leave, but he may well do. I can see him being used in a deal to get James Rodriguez in at OT, a mighty fine winger and top prospect.

We're always 'penned back' against the better teams because that's how we play against the big teams. We are and have been a counter attacking side for many years. We allow the opposition onto us leaving gaps behind them for our wingers and forwards to exploit on the counter attack.

The only reason it hasn't been as devastating this season as others is 2 reasons.

1) Our wingers have all been off form and
2) We've had a new striker in RVP who i'm of the belief we still haven't fully worked out how to fit him in that system.

Au contraire, I enjoyed our football since the CS in 2011 up till that horror show against City where our football was changed back to being boring but more solid at the back.

I watched him a couple of weeks back. He does indeed look excellent. I personally prefer Bale but as he'll cost a bomb Rodriguez is an excellent alternative.

RVP's Left Foot

Agreed, but part of me would like to sit back and watch the fury on this website if we went into next season with Valencia / Welbeck on the right and Zaha / Young on the left.

Arab, that was 3-5 games and then we started playing kak again

posted on 18/3/13

i dont think our football has been bad for years, but i do agree with Arab, its been far more negative since the city spanking.

what utd need is a talisman type of player.

someone in the ronaldo / cantona mould.

==================

I'm sorry but we counter attack but are not a counter attacking team.

For years we've penned teams with wave and wave of attacks and have punished teams on the break when they attacked us.

To suggest we are a counter attacking team is not accurate

posted on 18/3/13

I agree on that Dunc.

We do need someone to get the ball and run at the opposition. Someone like Bale or the like.

Dare I say it, someone selfish enough to just do his own thing like Ronaldo used to.

Whilst we all agree winning it whilst playing the most swashbuckling, exciting football ever seen would be great,i think SAF and most of us would say at the end of the season winning is the be all and end all.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

But that's my point MuDD. How can we have wave after wave of attacks and punished teams on the break if the opposition just doesn't attack us like Norwich and Reading?

We almost need two styles of play these days. One which is counter attacking against teams who attack us and the other is trying to break down the most negative of teams.

It's not that hard to implement two styles but as this season we have as many as 5 players in a game who have only been in the first team for a season and a half it will take time.

I don't think SAF will be that silly to do that
Out of our wingers, I'd want Young to go. I am in the minority that still believes in Valencia returning back to that blistering form he had over the past few years, he's just going through a yearly dip imo.

posted on 18/3/13

I don't think we can categorically say we are or are not a counter attacking team. Fergie likes to have a tactically flexible side which can tailor its approach to the needs of the game.

There's evidence (with the recruitment of Kagawa and the occasional use of the diamond formation) that he wants us to develop a way of playing through the middle more, though I'd doubt that he has converted to this as 'the way'.

Is it possible that we are partly in tactical transition? That we'll look more coherent as we fine tune this side of our game and Kagawa grows in prominence?
