Rangers smokescreen
by cybershed (U4943) 4 August 2011Comment on this Article Rangers bidding for Goodie was a non-story.

IMO, the series of bids by Rangers were a smokescreen to make it look like they were chasing talent to strengthen their squad. If you are really serious about signing a player, why on earth would you table bids well below the level of a bid that has been accepted? It just doesn't make any sense at all!

The only logical conclusion is that Rangers were NOT serious about signing the player but wanted to give the impression that they were involved in the bidding. Thus, they ensured that all their bids were well below the asking price.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You wasted a fair chunk of your life posting this drivel didnt you.

Rangers thought Cardiff were the other serious bidders for Goodwillie. Blackburn only appeared on the scene this week after a move for another player broke down.

Rangers thought Goodwillie wanted to come to ibrox. Goodwillie is a Rangers fan and Ally wants players at the club who will play for the jersey.

Yes the bidding was ridiculous and Rangers should have pur the £2m on the table the second the court case was dropped.

But to speculate this is all a big ruse to pretend Rangers are willing to pay money for decent players?

Oh dear!!??

Rangers have made themselves look ridiculous throughout the Goodwillie saga. Yet by your logic they have been failing with multiple bids in an attempt to IMPRESS the fans?

Anly an Arab could come up with guff like that.

posted on 4/8/11

have to say, goodwillie didnt make a peep the entire time, didnt look to be bothered about signing for rangers at all.

usually if a player really wants to go there he will say so in interviews but he kept his mouth shut, now he needs to develop that in his nightlife.

Yes, I admit I am speculating. The only other speculative interpretation of Rangers bidding activity here is that they are just utterly incompetent. But I cannot beleive that anyone could be THAT incompetent.

Sorry Coach - but the bidding behaviour by Rangers just doesn't add up. All Rangers needed to do was match the valuation which was £2M up front. This would've been accepted by United and the player could then have entered into talks with Rangers.

But Rangers activity was bizarre. They said that in their opinion the player was not worth £2m, fair enough, they didn't bid that in writing EVER.

Rangers put in a number of bids throughout the week, sometimes twice or three times a day. Most of them were verbal - which would not be consiered in any case, but they kept increasing the bids by paltry amounts. NONE of them matching the current leader in the race (Blackburn @ £2M up front).

What is your interpretation of Rangers behaviour then?

There was a belter of a comment on the Record's site this morning, calling for a boycott of Tannadice and criticising the "usual self-interest from Dundee United".

Er, yes, as opposed to Rangers egalitarian policy of free money and players for everyone?

For once, Rangers couldn't afford one of our players and he didn't particularly want to go to them anyway, that's absolutely all there is to it.

Tough.

ibrox elite, so what if united moved the goalposts? we can sell our players to whoever we like, for whatever price is best. who are you to say we cant? just because the SFA panders to your clubs every whim doesnt mean the rest of us have to! honestly you lot make stagger me with your bitterness and paranoia

Point is you believe everything you read in the papers. Is that your source for "he never wanted to go to Rangers" as stated by one of your fellow fans? If not, then when did Goodwillie ever say that?

firstly I believe my fellow arab was refering to a comment left by a rangers fan calling for a boycott so cant really see what your point is. As for goodwillies preference well I'd say the lad seems happy enough with his choice wouldnt you?

Tell me, in what way did United move the goalposts?

Was it not Whyte who stated in the daily rangers that Goodwillie was not worth £2 million,

United always stated the valuation of £2m, which most people seem to have been able to understand outwith ibrox.

Never at any time did rangers make a serious bid in writing, all their talking was done by phone or through the daily rangers.

Did Goodwillie ever say he wanted to sign for rangers?

You lot must understand that if Goodwillie really wanted to sign for rangers he would have refused to even talk to Blackburn.

So go ahead with the boycott many of your fans have been proposing on websites and radio talk shows, I for one would be happy about that, maybe then I would bring my children to games at Tannadice against rangers without having to expose them to the bitterness and hatred that spews out from your so called football fans!

posted on 4/8/11

From what I heard, and this was third hand, the way Goodwillie saw it was that if he had to choose between a Championship club and Rangers he would have gone to Rangers, however if it was a EPL club then he was always going to go to the Premiership.

Obviously once Blackburn were interested that it was it finished for Rangers. He was never going to go there.

As for all this "he's a Rangers fan" thing.....the simple fact is that the club that Goodie has most affinity for is Dundee United, not Rangers. He may well have supported Rangers growing up, but he's an Arab now. This happens with players, just ask Jamie Carragher.

barab - dun utd publicly said they wanted 2m. He went for 2.8m and a sell on clause. These are all facts. So tell me how utd didnt move the goalposts.

United stated that they valued Goodwillie at £2M, they were offered more than that by Blackburn, what do you expect them to say to Blackburn, no its ok lads just keep the 800k and sell on clause because rangers have (after 6 bids of less than £2m) tried to match your offer at £5 a week for the rest of the century.
Get your heed out the buckie bottle and wise up!!!

Do you honestly think Goodie would have signed for you lot at less than half the wages he was offered at Blackburn?

I will say it again.....HE NEVER WANTED TO SIGN FOR YOU OR HE WOULD HAVE REFUSED TO EVEN TALK WITH BLACKBURN AND FORCED A TRANSFER TO RANGERS......

posted on 4/8/11

barab - we all read the quotes from utd for 2m. So i think its safe to say blackburn did as well. I also think blackburn would of went to utd with 2m. Wouldnt you agree?

Blackburn ended up paying 2.8m plus a sell on fee. Do you think they did this as a goodwill gesture or for the good of their health? No.

They paid it cos thats what utd wanted. Therefore utd moved the goalposts.

My god, you guys are hard work.......

they came back with an improved offer to try and ensure they got Goodie, which they did, at no time did rangers offer as good a deal as Blackburn, or the wages for the player. At no time did Goodie ever refuse to talk to Blackburn, or insist he wanted to talk to rangers...................................................

The movement of goalposts seems to be something you are hanging onto to fuel your bitterness against any club who doesn't pander to you lot!!!!

I hope you are going to boycott games at Tannadice, we could do without your bitterness here!

United said they wanted £2M up front - add ons were never publicly stated.

Rangers did not offer £2M up front - they proposed a schedule of payments over the course of the player's contract (if he was to agree to it). This was not acceptable to United -end of!

Besides - despite what the DR claimed, Goodie was not interested in speaking to, or signing for Rangers. Seemingly Goody's agent informed Rangers of this early on, yet Rangers decided to waste everyone's time by tabling ridiculous bids.

He's gonna be a star in the EPL - not interested in your diddy club so just get over it.
