I understand your argument, but I don't agree. From watching the team (literally every game), it is clear we are a much more stable, much more together unit. We were unlucky this year, Arsenal went on an amazing run, got a lot of luck - we were short of luck all season.

I don't think the table is always a true reflection of what a teams progress is. Especially when the placings between us and Arsenal was so marginal. They literally won 4th place over us on a dodgy referee decision, an piece of luck, a late goal we conceded - we're as good as Arsenal.

We were unlucky to come 5th - so easily could have been fourth. That's not backwards progress. That's maintaining our position... and with a new manager, new personal, especially in such important positions, a host of important players injured for long periods and still, no NEW STRIKER - I just can't see how you can say that we are going BACKWARDS.

Position wise yes, of course, but in reality, like I say, if you contextualise everything, we're on the up.

Chicken your problem is that you don't think long term whatsoever. AVB was brought in to plan for the future, the fact that he dropped a league position means nothing at the moment, everyone else can see we are pushing to progress, one step backwards, two step forwards, think about it like that. One season is not the be all and end all, open your eyes

The Good

You cannot make excuses because of "luck" this season and not at least recognise any "unluck" from the season before.

And i'm sorry to disagree again but the table is the absolute true reflection of how a club is progressing in the sport they play in.

And the same goes for every other sport you can possibly think off.

Simply "thinking" or having the "opinion" that your club is progressing holds no value at all in the real scheme of things.

Liverpool think they're better than Spurs but how would you say to an LFC fan that they are wrong?

I know how i would say it, i would say that after the 38 league games that both teams played, we scored more points than them in this season, which puts us higher in the league table than them.

You cannot say, well we won more points than we did last season against a bunch of different teams & players, so i'm going to take it upon myself to create my own ranking table - and we're better than X, Y, Z.

If Sunderland finish a place lower than last season on more points they will get relegated - that just cannot ever be seen or considered as progression. Now just because we've dropped a place at the other end makes no difference.

We have to stop trying to beat an irrelevant stat from the season before but instead concentrate on the more important target - which is actually beating the other competitors and scoring more points than them in the SAME season.

You can use any other stat you want, you can claim we scored more goals from odd numbered shirts compared to even, or say we made more defensive blocks than the previous season, but as with the comparison of points tallies - its totally irrelevant & pointless. The table measures where every club is in their respective league is, and we have gone from 4th to 5th (backwards). Going up from 4th would be 3rd - we finished 5th.

I'm sorry but there is no crystal ball available here. Just because you believe we have gone one step back to go 2 steps forward means no more than my gut feeling that we'll continue to fall under AVB.

And whilst you dont believe that dropping a position means much at the moment, it still means we have gone backwards.

Now regardless of whether we agree about AVB or not, you are the first poster on here that will actually admit 4th to 5th is a step backwards - even though you believe it will be for the best in the long run, at least you can see it.

And i dont mean that patronising (in case it sounded that way).

Not always. But league tables are black & white. There is no grey areas. You cannot argue with it. The table tells us how every single club did in that particular season.

I'm the opposite, i actually think this group of players is far stronger than we had before and AVB should have secured 4th or even 3rd with these players.

I have no hatred for AVB. He seems like a very nice man. A likeable chap. But i just dont think he's good enough for Spurs.

Do you think every Spurs player is world class? If not, do you hate all the ones that you dont think are?
