I would put him in the VDV category of player.

Add912, you cannot ignore 75 goals in 115 appearances. You don't achieve a high ratio of goals per game without ability.

Add, I know full well how he is. An extremely frustrating player, always offside and not a very gifted footballer whatsoever. However, he is an improvement because he is a class finisher, good in the air, and his hold up play is decent. Quite lazy too though

Name me the players that have a better goal ratio than Gomez. I can only think of 3-4, and they're all valued at 45m+

Doovde it's not his goalscoring that's his problem, it's his ability as a football player

He would be a superb signing, but IMO he is too good for us. He was Bayern's record signing when he joined and I would have thought would be on well over £100k a week.

Nice to see we're being linked with good players though

So... He's carp, but luckily scores a lot of goals, wins leagues, wins the CL and wins domestic cups by fluke?

the thing is that ade is actually a ridiculously good player - when he is on it... we saw that v chelsea away.. he was unreal.

the problem is that there is no inbetween.. he is either on it (rare) or he is woeful.

a shame.

Analog, I'd say his goal scoring is his ability. You don't win countless trophies and score that many goals if you're shíte, do you?

Cannot believe that even hypothetically, some folk would be against Mario Gomez being in their team...

Mental!

Chronic I don't get Ade, he was unbelievable at Chelsea, one of Tottenham's best display from a player all season. If only he could have put a few more of those shifts in

Doodve, yes, as I said he is an excellent finisher, always in the right place at the right time. That's pretty much his only contribution though. He's tall, so he can head the ball, and he's strong, so he can hold it up to a reasonable standard too. However, he can't pass, or dribble, or do anything else really. Put him anyway other than up top and it would be like sticking a random bloke from the crowd on. No coincidence that Bayern bench him, play mandzukic, and progress. Mandzukic scores less, but the team plays better because he's less selfish, works hard, and is a decent footballer too.

He'd still be an improvement though, like i said

I don't want a striker who can pass or dribble I want one who scores goals

Gomez would suit the premier league. He is physical and a good finisher. Would be a good target man too. I would be delighted if we got him.

Strikers who can only score goals ie Gomez, Defoe, Bent, etc. are a dying breed in football, it's not the 90's anymore. Strikers need to be able to do much more now

posted on 8/6/13

Analog, I disagree. In a 4231/433, the CF needs to be able to score goals. This was our main problem this season....

Analog, Spot on!!

That is exactly why he will not be going to a top, top club for ridiculous money.

Doovde, great goal scorer, awful footballer. Doesn't Darren Bent have a great record in the prem too?

Saying that, I think Gomes would suit AVBs style of play.

-----------------------

Remember Drogba for Chelsea when they won the title? He scored something like 15 goals but as their best player in the 433. You really want the forward to hold the ball up.

I hate strikers who are defined by their goals. It basically means that if they don't score we've basically played with 10 men because they do not contribute in other areas.

In a 442 I'd agree, but as a lone striker you need to be in the box. As a CF your role is to score. The amount of times I saw Ade on the left wing and no one in the box. That frustrates me...

The top strikers in the world are all great footballers too. Of course strikers need to score goals, but also contribute much more as well. Limited strikers are becoming less frequent. Falcao is a huge exception, but even then I maintain that he's overrated, there are quite a lot of better forwards than him. The day he wins a champions league I'll change my opinion

I would take a striker who scores 15 goals a season, but makes 15 assists too, than a striker who just scores 25 ie Gomez, although for 7 million I would rip your hand off

posted on 8/6/13

I think you are being unfair on Gomez. He can hold the ball up well and bring others in to play. IMO he is an ideal striker in a 433/4231.

Last season he was superb for Bayern and Germany. Mandzukic has come in and been top class so there is no shame losing his place to him.

So what you're really asking for is a striker and a creative midfielder.
