Give any decent player in Europe or South America the choice of Villa or Tottenham and he'd choose Spurs everytime.
Is that in the past 24 hours you have been proven wrong. Hence the article we are all commenting on. Unfortunately as it stands Tottenham nor Villa have a wage structure to attract the best players. That is why Bale will inevitably leave.
After all we are all pretty much playing for the last 15 places"
do you know how many points we finished above you last season? Or how many years we have finished above you? Saying everyone is playing for the last 15 places implies that you (Aston Villa) have a good chance of getting 5th this season absolute laughable. There are 3 teams probably challenging the title (United, City and Chelsea) .... 2 teams definetly challenging the top 4 (Arsenal and Spurs) with potentially Liverpool entering that race. 2/3 teams challenging Uefa cup ie Everton etc......you are one of the teams currently relegation battlers so how you can put us in the same level as you is beyond me
"Explain how it doesn't make sense for Benteke to move to Spurs apart from money?
Do you think Benteke knows or cares about the history of either club?"
If Swansea finished above Liverpool for a couple of seasons would you expect players to suddenly see Swansea as a bigger club?
If you look at it across the whole season it is fair to say there was a big gap points wise and performance wise between Tottenham and Aston Villa in my opinion
However, if you look at the final 3 months of the season where new players have settled in (the final 11 games) Spurs got 21 points and Villa got 17 points.
The gap as the season wore on started to shrink. Since that point Villa have strengthened the squad with numerous signings and Tottenham have also signed a player. The teams look more evenly matched going into the next season with Spurs having the edge while Bale stays fit and at Spurs
.
When you say "how many times you have finished above you" over what time period? Over the last 3 seasons you have. The 3 before that we did. What's your point.? Or are we going to decend into a "history debate? If you believe Spurs are a power house of English football they aren't and never have been. I think I made it clear in my previous post I don't care much for the history debate, but (whether you care to admit it or not) Spurs trophy haul is poor and is poor in comparison to clubs such as Huddersfield, Wolves, Everton, Chelsea let alone Aston Villa. You seem to place great value on not finishing first. This is a very strange barometer of success. You and I both understand what I mean. If Villa were wound up tomorrow I will have seen them win everything except the FA Cup. Can you say the same.... Thought not.
Sorry a convoluted way to answer the question "how many years have we finished above you"
The answer is less than we have finished above you. In the Premier League anyway. 12 - 9. Or expressed as a percentage, Villa have finished above Spurs 25% of the time.
We have won virtually the same amount of trohpies if we are talking about history, there is barely anything in it. We have a better trophy history than all the clubs you mentioned apart from Chelsea of recent so i don't see why you are bringing them into it. Like i say your last trophy was 1996 and ours was 2008......recently we have been much better than you in every area of the field. Yes you might of been european champions back in the 80s but so were forest and look where they are now.
Brutus, you are clearly on a wind up so won't even entertain you. If you acutally think that Spurs and Aston Villa are "evenly matched" going into the next season than you have serious mental issues. So i guess Villa are going to be challenging the top 4 then???? by your logic they must be
Don, if you read again I said MORE evenly matched, and I also stated with Bale in the team Tottenham have the edge
i will correct you on a couple of things though mate.
Aston Villa have won 20 major trophies, Tottenham have won 17 - that is not virtually the same especially when you consider Villa's, in fairness, have won far more of the main/big competitions.
Also, if winning a more recent trophy is going to be the barometer of success then Wigan, Portsmouth, Birmingham and Swansea are more successful than Spurs
Everton and Chelsea have both done well overall too.
Don I hold no grudge towards spurs. Like I said I wish you luck for the coming season. The reason I bring up the other clubs is their success in the league.
But as Brutus points out in terms of trophies won, you guys don't come close. I'm not sure but aren't many of your 17 the Charity Shield?
I know on the old 606 you lot got wound up with Holte banging on about track records, and I understand this must have been annoying, but ultimately he was right. I don't know of a better measure of success than trophies won. We can debate the relevance of the reference period, but these are the ultimate measures that define a club.
Charity Shields are not included in Tottenham's total of 17 major trophies as it is not considered as a major trophy.
Of the 17 major trophies Tottenham have there is a very good FA cup record with Tottenham being one of the top winners of that competition with about 8 I believe
But platt, you talk like your major trophy history is a lot better than ours when it's clearly not. You are not really that far infront of us at all. If you look at the major trophy table Villa, spurs and Chelsea are relatively close with United, Liverpool and Arsenal leading by a distance.
Brutus, yes spurs have got 8 fa cups which was the best record until United over took us.
I'm still not having it though. I personally think spurs are a bigger club than Aston villa by a small margin and are better supported aswell as known more across the globe. I guarantee people would know the name Tottenham Hotspur rather than Aston Villa.

On Modric, we would have been happy to retain his talent, but as I recall from 2011, when we rejected Chelsea, we were certainly unhappy about his attitude. And to Don's point, we certainly never said Chelsea or Real would have been a step down/smaller club in the present day.

Plenty of Spurs say Chelsea are a small club, just one that got lucky with a sugar daddy

The problem I have when trying to argue points on her, or in general, is that there is a proportion of Spurs supporters who are idiots. Much the same with every club.
So you try and put together a point, it will be be undermined by something one of these people said once upon a time. Reminds me of the people gloating saying mind the gap to gooners.
Chelsea are clearly a bigger club. It's safe to say that they definitely have more fans than us. And the rest, given their success over the last decade is unarguable.
I think the confusion of this thread is that a) no one knows what makes clubs bigger than others, unless there is a clear gap, and b) size of club and whether a player would want to move from one club to another aren't exactly the same thing. Or else Liverpool, who admittedly still punch above their current status with signings, would be able to attract the best players in the world.
*More fans now, particularly globally.
The problem with the big club argument is fans trying to equate it with the current standing of their club. History is where you came from, and whilst it might give you a sense of pride, basking in the glories of bygone years means absolutely nothing when it comes to judging your sides chances in the coming season.
Over the last few seasons Spurs have been chasing top 4, Villa have ben struggling to stay in the top flight...that's not opinion, it's just the way it is. History, heritage and fan base don't make the slightest difference when it comes down to it.
Don, in terms of major trophies surely a team has either won more or not. Whether the number is 1, 2 or 3 or 4 different it is still crucially more
If you look in the last 20+ years Tottenham have won, what, 2 trophies - which just highlights what a big difference the number is
If it wasn't for Fergie Tottenham would probably still hold the FA Cup record mate
As for the point about people knowing the name Tottenham Hotspur more than Aston Villa again I doubt that is true. One of the clubs has won on Europe's biggest stage, played more in the top flight and competed in the World Club Cup and European Super Cup- the other Tottenham simply haven't. You probably have to take yourself out of the situation to look at it objectively.
Also, a quick look on internet trends shows there has been more interest in Aston Villa than Tottenenham Hotspur over the last 10 years and last year. It's factual rather than a opinion.
I don't think so Brutus mate, not sure where you got your Internet trend fact from because its clearly not true. Spurs are a better supported club than villa that's for sure worldwide and nationally.
Brutus, in the last 20 years spurs have still won more trophies than Villa.
Don, I understand you think that and I'm not saying you're defenitely wrong but the information I have seen isn't supporting what you are saying mate.
As for last 20 years both clubs have won 2 league cups each
Both clubs should have won more that is for sure
Most are responses to spurs fans.
"well we didn't want him anyway" comments.
"He was never worth that."
3 to 4 years ago Spurs were rock bottom of the league and Harry saved you.
It is unlikely either side are going to get into that kind of mess this year.
But with both wobbles it was the same cause, losing a manager and a poor manager stepping in and bringing in a load of rubbish. McLeish for us, Ramos for you.
If AVB goes and takes Bale and some Joker is appointed, don't be so arrogant that the same mess can't happen again.

With the squad he had, you expect nothing less from a vaguely decent manager.
