Not the fastest to accelerate but once he gets going he's very quick, apparently he ran 100m in 10.7 seconds, not sure I can believe that though.

He's like many of the other footballers people have mentioned, he gave up his Athletics career for football, I'm not saying he's the fastest but he's quick.

To be fair, Walcott used to absolutely hate playing against Enrique, due to the Spaniard's speed and strength (leans his body in so Walcott can't get by).
However, the Spaniard did get beaten in a foot race on a couple of occasions by Ramires the other year in the FA Cup final.

It's a difficult question to answer, because players have different relative speeds over different distances.

100m is generally used as the barometer for pace, but in reality, you never see footballers actually run that distance in a match; pace over 5-10 yards is much more important.

In terms of 100m sprinters, the Premiership has a few: Kiwomya, Onouha, and Miyaichi have all recorded incredibly impressive times over that distance, and as I recall, James Vaughan (not a Premiership player any more) was at one point the fastest 11 year old in Britain, I believe!

I don't think you can really say unless you specify a distance and make them race. Dunc claims Valencia held the record based on an extrapolation of his sprint against Liverpool, but Castrol index found Walcott to have run the top speed in the Premiership, and extrapolated that data to suggest he would have a 100m time that would have got him into the final of the Olympics! But reaction and acceleration time have a big impact, so even that's not really a true reflection.

I will through in some honourable mentions of players that don't seem to have been mentioned though:
Cameron Jerome, Nathan Dyer, Bassong, Shane Long, Martin Ollson, and Micah Richards (longer distance) all deserve a mention.

Does anyone remember the Rumbelows sprint challenge?

Back in 1992 Saint and Greavsie ran a competition to find the fastest 100m runner in football. They ran heats over several weeks (I think every club sent someone) with the final being run just before the Manchester United - Notts Forest League cup final.

I remember watching United's Danny Wallace in the heats running a very slow time of about 12.40s. I was 14 at the time and running 12.00ish.

Malcolm McDonald did 100m as part of a show called 'The Superstars' and ran it in 10.9 seconds, which is incredible considering it wasn't his sport and this was nearly 40 years ago!
