Rafa winning the champs league with houliers team. I stand by that. Credit that he then got then there in 2007 with his squad/team - but he lost

benitez is a good manager if you give him a team on match day and tell him here are your 21 players.

The moment he starts handling the transfers as well, beware.
Napoli is great for him cause De Laurentis handles deals himself. Managers just give him a list of names for positions and he buys who he wants or can from that list.

You're an idiot then I'm afraid. No offence mate but its a ridiculous comment.

I take it then that If Moyes does anything worthwhile this season all plaudits should go to Fergie?

yes but Houlliers team was shít,it was a minor miracle what Rafa did in 2005

Steven Finnan
Jerzy Dudek
Djimi Traore
Harry Kewell
Milan Baros
Luis Garcia

all started that 2005 final against a Milan team that was the best team in Europe

Dida
Cafu
Stam
Nesta
Maldini
Gattuso
Pirlo
Seedorf
Kaka
Shevchenko
Crespo

And Mourinho therefore won the league with Ranieri's team.

I think one of the flaws of Rafa is buying players with a good director of football you have a great combination.

So did Di Matteo win the CL with AVB's team?

Ranieri was very good at Chelsea IMO. He should have been given time

If Moyes wins a trophy, it will be with Sir Alex's team. He won't be credited with a genuine win for about 4 years seeing as Sir Alex had left it to the new boss, with a future.

Benitez is a brilliant coach when he's at his best.

Wow when you compare that line up of ac milan against our team rafa and co really did make a miracle. How on earth did we beat them with that team!

So Moyes will get no credit at all?

posted on 18/9/13

FJM probably a sliding scale of credit, 4 years sounds a little too long to me....

The unfair side of this is the previous manager is rarely seen as a good excuse for the current managers problems.

I think if we win something this season Moyes will get a lot of credit for actually bringing a CM in!

I don't get it at all. The team that Houllier left Rafa was decent, got 4th, we weren't even in the Champions league the season before Rafa.

Rafa took that team added a few players, changed the tactics and formation and won it. How can Houllier get any credit for that?

The huge difference between Rafa and Jose is their relationship with the players.

Jose is all about gaining the trust of the players to the point where they will 'die' for him. Just watch the video of Materazzi and Jose embracing after the CL final to see how much certain players loved Jose.

Rafa IMO is a very good coach but lacks certain skills to be a manager in the mould of a Jose of Ferguson who both have a great emotional attachment to their players which plays such a big role. Of course this can back fire as it did with certain Real players with Jose and Ferguson's relationships with certain players (Rooney and Nani recently spring to mind).

Rafa is a very good manager, all you need to do is see his record to understand that but he definitely has weaknesses. Jose IMO is an incredible manager, yes he has had money but he is also tactically and mentally one of the finest managers of all time. His record for Porto was unbelievable and his treble achievement with Inter during the peak of Pep's Barca was also a brilliant achievement. Replacing Ibra with Eto'o, Sneijder, Pandev and Lúcio was excellent business that ultimately won him the treble.

Why do people rate Mourinho so much? I don't see it tbh

He is basically Roy Keane with more money after Porto
------------------------------------------------------------

I forgot Fergie got his players on a free transfer and minimum wage

Benitez was in a position where if he bought a player that wasn't good it was highlighted pretty quickly

Mourinho/Chelsea bought other top clubs targets (ala willian recently) and then they rotted on the bench until off loaded. City started to do the same

Mourinho is the second most over rated manager after Pep

Give them an everton and they would do an Avram grant after he left Chelsea. Yes that Avram grant who nearly won a CL
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surely the same applies to Ferguson then? who in the 90's and 00's before Roman came was outspending the whole country?

Even with your 3 in a row between 06 and 09, we stopped spending that much and you lot were spending more, to the extent that by the time it got to 2010 you actually had a more expensive squad.

Ofcourse money does help, but if you think a half decent manager, let alone Roy fecking Keane, could have walzed into Kings Road and had similar success then quite frankly you know nothing about football.

In the 90s man utd were one of the lowest spending teams. There was a reason why arsene wenger didn't moan about it then as man utd did't spend much. Man utd spent the most after the 97-98 season ended dreadfully still can remember overmars and anelka scoring big goals. 98-99 season we spent big only. 1986-mid 1998 man utd net spend was I believe £4m.

posted on 19/9/13

Without getting into a debate about spending, can I just point out that the Man Utd squad that won their first premier league was the most expensive squad assembled in English football history at the time. You spent less money after.

posted on 19/9/13

United were outspent by Liverpool and Newcastle were pretty close in the 90's. Your very own Chelsea were pretty big spenders as well.

Liverpool have still outspent us to this day but that mostly seems to go under the radar because they usually waste their money.

Really? Do you have any evidence to back that up?

I know we spent a bit but I never remember hearing it was 'the most expensive squad assembled in English football history'.

Our most expensive transfer at the time was Pallister at £2.5m which was still some way short of Blackburn's fee for Shearer (£3.3m).

posted on 19/9/13

Of course we spent money. We were catching up. We also had more managers, each one wanting to put their own stamp on the team and thus spending money.

Fergie's longevity and success meant continuity, which meant the odd big transfer here and there, adding to an already successful squad. Everyone else was spending to catch up, which is why lots of teams have spent more than you. But don't forget that in the late 80s and early 90s you were blowing everyone else out of the water with your spending.

I'm guessing that Moyes will spend a lot more money in the next few years as he puts his stamp on the team, especially if you underperform this season.

Our main XI for 92/93

Schmeichel £500,000
Irwin £625,000
Pallister £2.5m
Bruce £800,000
Parker £2m
Giggs FREE
Ince £1m
McClair £850,000
Sharpe £200,000
Hughes £1.8m
Cantona £1.2m

Total £11.475

Liverpool

James £1m
Jones £300,000
Wright £2.5m
Nicol £300,000
Burrows £725,000
McManaman FREE
Thomas £1.5m
Barnes £900,000
Walters £1.25
Stewart £2.4m
Rush £2.7m

Total £13.575m

These are quick looks at the 2 teams rough starting line-ups and Liverpool's is already more expensive. I'm sure if I looked at teams like Arsenal, Everton and maybe Blackburn too their total fees wouldn't be far off either. If you could pack up your claim with evidence that would be useful.
