If Benitez came in under different circumstances I don't think he would have got half as much stick as he did.
Di Matteo was a Chelsea legend, results weren't going our way admittedly but he was still very popular with the fans.
Benitez's comments were a convenience to many fans so they could justify their anger at his appointment.
