My opinion on Webb is set in stone though. He struts about the pitch like he owns it, oozes authority whilst failing to make a big call on its merits. He's closer to the worst ref in the PL than the best imo. But he continues to get the big games and continues to make crucial wrong calls.
Make no mistake, I wanted Arsenal to win today. BUT I am tired of seeing Webb influence the result of games through simply not having the conviction to make the right call. It's like Groundhog Day.

I agree. I hope he doesn't ref any of our remaining games.
Shouldn't be allowed to ref any team's games. The replay showed he was looking directly at the incident and he didn't want to make that call. Yet again. It's unforgivable.
That is true Merrysupersteve, however you're preaching to the converted here, for all football fans.. except those on the PMGO,
" Howard Webb, who will go to the World Cup this summer as England's top official, decided Oxlade-Chamberlain's clumsy challenge from behind was fair"
It is so frustrating. Seeing a big game decided by poor officiating is just wrong to me. All refs make mistakes but that wasn't a mistake today, it was just turning a blind eye. And we've all suffered (and benefitted to be fair) from his weak officiating. There are better officials out there and you don't have to look too far to find them.
Webb wants to make sure he doesn't influence the match so badly that he actually stops reffing the match.
there's irony or summat in there
Kaisers
That sums it up precisely. That's not what I look for in a ref.
Just a bit of general input here, not necessarily about todays penalty decision. In the OP there's mention of the striker not going anywhere or being denied a chance at goal so it shouldn't be a penalty.
Well frankly, what the fack has that got to do with anything? You seem to be confusing what a foul is with what is a straight red for denying a goal scoring opportunity. A striker could be surrounded by 10 defenders and running away from goal but if he's fouled in the box (just like anywhere else on the pitch) it's a penalty. The goal scoring chance element only comes into play when deciding whether to send a player off, give a yellow or give no card at all
The second one wasn't given because suarez bounced off the turf needlessly like he'd been shot.
The first one is what I loathe about modern football and you see it every week in every game. The Alan Shearer 'ah there's contact he's entitled to go down'. Absolute rubbish.

If the reason the second wasn't given is because of a theatrical fall then there's no place for Webb as a referee. A fouls a foul no matter how a player goes down
Oh yeah, no doubt it's a pen. Webb just wants to guarantee his place in Brazil!
Alright chap! Thought you were making excuses for him or something!
Haha! It is frustrating that he is supposedly our best ref but kicking someone in the chest is acceptable. Even Chris Foy would get that one right.
Yeah, don't mean to sound bitter but he wasn't great today. The pen aside he missed some bad calls for both teams.
Ah well, at least it was only the cup
He never is. Good luck with the remainder of the season apart from the return match against the blues!
The second pen not being given was Suarez own fault for the theatrics that followed,it must have put a doubt in webbs mind. Its human nature to not want to be conned and his previous will have counted against him.
It won't matter anyway because Arsenal will get seriously buttf ucked at wembley by City in the semi or final
