AVB appointed by Zenit

what has AVB actually accomplished in his managerial career?

-----

An unbeaten season with Porto, including both domestic cups and the Europa league.

That aside, what had Rodgers won when he took over at Liverpool.. Mourinho before he took over at Porto..?

Porto are actually in the luxury position of being able to take the Europa League seriously though and as i said above, i don't think it's the mark of a great manager who's able to dominate a weak league with a team who normally wins it anyway and with players like Hulk, Moutinho and Falcao

Maybe it's not the mark of a great manager.. doesn't mean AVB isn't though.

for me anyway the issue is he hasn't really proven anything, haven't seen anything to make me think he's particularly special

So do you think we're in a better position with Sherwood than we would have been with AVB?

If you do, then I think you're completely mistaken.

People have an entrenched dislike for AVB, probably because of his dour personality but more likely because of the way he's portrayed in the press.

You dismiss his achievements in the Portuguese league and then dismiss his achievements in Europe on the basis that he was in an easy league. Quite astonishing.

The vast majority of managers out there aren't "proven" then, in fact by your criteria SAF was largely unproven.

I think he has Gareth Bale to thank for a flattering record. The fact remains we played some awful football under him, bad signings were made on his watch and we got rid of a few that I would have considered better than we signed... Huddlestone for instance. A lot of the blame sits with Levy and Baldini, sure, but AVB is more responsible for our downfall.

------------

well he has though. he has proven far more than say a Harry Redknapp has done. redknapp did a better job at spurs than avb did, but in his whole career harrys top prize is an fa cup, whereas AVB's is a Uefa cup.

so unless you are going to tell me that redknapp is also not a proven manager, then it doesn't make sense for anyone to label avb as unproven.

unproven in England would be more of a case, but even that is not so, as a record points haul for a club you manage in the prem era, points to him at least having something about him.

AVB did some very good things at spurs - he definitely sorted us out away from home (something redknapp started), and he also guided us to some very good victories.

overall not as good as I wanted him to be, but clearly "proven"

Absolutely unbelievable!

What "downfall" are you referring to?

We were 5th in the league when he was sacked and we were still in all cup competitions.

Furthermore, I think people are overstating his influence on transfers. AVB was a "Head Coach" not a manager. Levy & Baldini chose the players, of that I have now doubt.

Carried by Bale last season, we finished lower than the previous season and would've finished about 7th or 8th if not for GB. We were awful second half of last season, carried that into this season & couldn't eeverse it - ugly style, grinding wins, humiliating defeats, ridiculous high line, isolating the only striker he had that could play in his system.

Sorry but how AVB keeps getting these big jobs is beyond me, he must give a mean presentation. I wasn't sorry to see him go, just sorry that Levy hadn't thought it trough properly and was reduced to replacing him with the janitor.

--------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry, but Bale had played nowhere near his potential under Harry, apart from during the CL campaign and fleeting glimpses of it otherwise. I still maintain AVB deserves credit for turning Bale from a clearly talented but inconsistent performer into a game-changing player

Does it really take a genius to put Gareth Bale in the bleedin middle of the pitch behind the striker? I think people are forcing the role AVB played in Bale's development here

not really. who said it did?

think people were just stating facts, bale played his best football under AVB.

that is simply a fact

AVB is one of the worst coaches I've ever seen manage a top 6 club.

The reason he keeps getting highly paid jobs is because he talks a bunch of jargon in meetings with owners desperate for a 'young, hungry, visionary' with a project to implement.

Truth is though - nobody in any of the top European leagues wanted him - so he's ended up in the failed manager's home that is the Russian League where guys like Luciano Spaletti and funnily enough, former Spurs boss Juande Ramos ended up.

To be honest, footballers generally get better as they get older. It's called maturity.

It's not like he was crap before AVB came. Didn't he win PFA POTY when Harry was in charge?

Stop forcing it, its cringing.

Eh?

I am simply stating that of teams usually considered to be in the top 6 (the better clubs in the PL) he is the worst coach I have seen at any of those clubs that I can recall.

what does that have to do with anything though?

So AVB is not as good as Fergie, Mourinho, Wenger, Pelligrini (backed by fortunes) and this makes him a useless manager?

I think you're allowing your personal dislike for AVB to cloud your judgement and make ridiculous statements

It has something to do with the fact this thread is devoted to discussing AVB and his credentials. Surely you knew this?

Not even gonna lie to you mate, you're having an absolute mare on this one. I made a comment about AVB being a bad coach, which largely contradicted those who were playing up his coaching methods and how he helped to coach Gareth Bale into a top player. Not rocket science.

I'm sorry that you've found it difficult getting your head around that though. Maybe you could do with a glass of water? Or go walk the dog for some fresh air.
