Good signs last night

posted on 26/1/17

Yeah, I saw a lot of complaining last night especially at half time.

Defensive issues are still there and we seem to concede in the same way every game but I felt we looked more like the team we have been this season as opposed to most other games this year.

I saw that coming last night. No invention in the final third and susceptible to the counter. Sturridge looks a shadow of his former self. Guess all those injuries are catching up with him

posted on 26/1/17

Yeah, more encouraging in the second half. Wouldn't read too much into their goal, but we do seem to be gotten at too easily. I think this is more to do with the midfield allowing oppo attacks to get going, too easily. We simply don't break up the attacks early enough.

I think the tactics have been wrong tbf

Sturridge needs the ball at feet imo and he wasn't getting that due to the huge gap between strikers and midfield. All he was getting was crosses from the flanks and was scrapping at half chances... He should've done better, but he was hardly getting much service imo... Look how deep he was coming at times

Firmino should be playing in the hole with Coutinho in and around him, but all Firmino was doing was stepping on Sturridge's shoes up there imo.

Can was the real passenger once again imo and recently I've notice how important Wijnaldum is.. He rarely misplaces a pass and shouldve been picked over Can.

Also Lallana offers nothing when he plays in advanced positions.

As I hate to say it, Klopp doesn't seem to have a plan B... And his style of play relies heavily on Mane creating space for himself and others..

Lastly Lovern scares the hell out of me and needs to be improved upon...

Wij + Can midfield for me

posted on 26/1/17

Earlier in the season our front three were finding space between the midfield at defence. Opponents have cottoned on to this. With Mané and Coutinho we had WFs who can find space both could move wide and best a player (especially Mane). Now opposition defences are limiting this space, our players are no longer on the half turn and the ball is just being shifted sideways.

It's frustrating, but without a front three of couts, Firmino and Mane we look pretty toothless in terms of creativity and penetration.

Disagree with most of 1Man's comment

Our worst 3 performers on the night were Hendo, Milner & Lovren. Captain, vice captain & senior defender. But still people complain about lack of leadership in the team and mentioned everyone else in the squad. If Hendo's injury is affecting him that much, he seriously needs to be dropped. The amount of times he was caught out of position was really worrying. Can bailed him out at times when attacks were breaking through because he was much better in his positioning on the night.

I think the only thing you could really fault Sturridge for last night was his finishing and maybe some wrong decisions in the final third. But then you'll also have to fault nearly the entire team for their decision making in the final third.

I dont know how anyone can say Can was a passenger last night
He was literally the only midfielder actually creating decent triangles in & around Swansea's box. This kinda of stuff always goes unnoticed though. Pretty sure Klopp notices it though, which is why he always seems to be picked.

Lallana was back to the kind of player we're used too this season. Not sure how you can say he doesnt offer anything.

Like i said, there were good signs last night. We created some very good chances, just couldnt seem to put them away. Cant fault the style of play or tactics...just the finishing.

I think we need a new striker now, as well as a wide forward.

With Ings career in limbo and Sturridge looking like he's on the wane, we need more goals and movement from a centre forward as an alternative to Firmino and the raw Origi.

I don't think it's entirely Sturridges fault that he hasn't looked very good this month, but this was his chance and he hasn't remotely taken it. He doesn't run in behind anymore, he barely runs at all in fact. His movement is too easy to track now and because he knows it he has lost his confidence in front of goal too.

An experienced centre forward with good movement, doesn't have to be prolific, just a steady source of goals, is now vital in the summer IMO.

Agree but that new striker needs to be able to perform a job in the wider positions as well for me.

Still think our front three long term is Coutinho-Firmino-Mane, they complement each other very well and we rarely lack ideas.

If we lose one of them to injury or other reasons then we never have the balance right with the replacement. Playing either Origi/Sturridge pushes Firmino wide where he is ineffective. Firmino has to be playing CF only from now on for me so it's important a new player could cover a wide position too.

Sturridge looks done to me, pace completely non existent now and defenders seem to have worked out if you keep him with his back to goal he just ends up dribbling the ball towards our penalty area. Add in his injury problems he's offering us little at the moment. Considering his wages, injuries, attitude (at times) selling seems pretty sensible.

Origi is worth persisting with but is still going to be very inconsistent for most of his career I feel.

I agree and its why I never spoke about the title even when we were swatting teams aside.

We were 8th last season and thereabouts too before that. In fact, apart from the SAS season, we have been midtable for a long time. There is a reason for that.

Last summer Klopp added Mane, Matip and Wij who I feel are solid players that can be part of a successful team. I would say last summer was a hugely successful window transfer wise, which is very rare for us.

We are just about guaranteed to improve on last season as I can't see us finishing lower than 6th which means we are guaranteed to be in Europe next season.

For me it's all about another couple of successful transfer windows and we'll go places under Klopp. He's a good manager but he's no miracle worker and he's clearly doing a job on us but having been in the wilderness for so long it will take time and transfers to make us consistent.

Compare this with someone like Conte who joined a team of league winners. Klopp joined a poorer team. Need to be patient.

Top 4 this season, maintain top 4 next season as a minimum target and then go from there.

6th doesn't automatically get Europe

I feel oddly indifferent this morning. Watched the game when I went home last night and after the first half you could see the writing on the wall. hell even during the first half being aware that one goal for them meant we needed 3 was enough to convince me we had no chance, especially on current form.

I think we are where we deserve t be. We've improved, but not enough. The dazzling forward line at time masks the lack of quality through the rest of the team.

posted on 26/1/17

If we get top 4 then I'd say we've improved enough for that period of time as expecting more will 99 times out of a hundred result in disappointment.

Improving 4 or more places at the top of this league in one season is no mean feat.

====================
Fully agree with this. I was suprised that Can got taken off but maybe he was tired. Out of the midfield 3 he was the only one that was trying to make things happen in the final 3rd. Unfortunately we had a striker who would be more use to us if he was back on the treatment table.

I would probably still pick Wij over Can but don't get how Can is becoming the whipping boy for some. He's not been great in some games but he never hides.
