Was listening to talksport they had Sam Allardyce on who was the opposing manager when we last lost at home v Palace.
He said that because we press so well they really only had one option, that was to hit Benteke and play off the knockdowns with a very mobile advanced midfielder playing around him.
This is because our fullbacks push up leaving space either side of the central midfield pairing and their first goal came from that.
Would prefer Ox and Milner today for this reason, that they can provide a bit of width on the opposing flank if the fullbacks don’t get high, but also provide cover when they do.

Yeah but our midfield plays much more differently than the last time we lost to Palace. We just don't leave many gaps these days...we're full on 125% focused for the full 90mins these days. I honestly can't imagine how mentally drained these players must be after every match.

Playing it long and looking for knockdowns when you’re up against VVD is futile.
I love how he doesn’t just head the ball clear, rather he passes to a teammate with his head. There is no second ball to win as it invariably ends up at the feet of one of our players
The defence being able to play a higher line helps as well. Space between the midfield and defence isn't as big as it used to be plus the players' positioning has improved immeasurably the last 2-3 years.
Feel free to enjoy a wahl meltdown:

Is there any chance of Yarmolenko playing? Wary of his height v Robbo. Yarnolenko would have a point to prove after that saga of us signing him or not.

Yeah well Konoplyanka and Yarmolenko were both linked.
Yeah they both were, in fairness to RITH

they both suck so i dont think we were really interested in either at any point
Kono career never took off after that failed move. Went to Spain and Germany and flopped and now back in Ukraine at Shaktar. We may have dodged a bullet there.
Wasn't it the owner of Zenit? that messed the whole transfer up...not us.

Probably. As you have gathered I haven’t been too hot on the details
I pretty sure the owner pulled the plug just as Ayre was about hop on Pegasus and conclude the deal for us.
