I still think he needs to stay at Rangers. He's only won 1 trophy in 3.5 (almost) seasons which albeit was the big one its still not enough. Yes there was a rebuild job but in that time Kilmarnock won 2 cups. He should stay loyal and win the league again with a cup and then in summer move on to the next job.
Clubs like Villa, Newcastle and even Leicester will continue to look for new managers and he will be in high demand. Eddie Howe ain't going to last long even if he keeps them in league.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been said before though, what if the opportunity doesn't come again? If he doesn't join Villa now, stays at Rangers and fails, why would a PL club want him if he couldn't succeed at Rangers?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They should be winning the league though. He's up against some Aussie plumber who doesn't have a clue. As I said 1 cup in 3.5 seasons is not that impressive but he's still getting linked to big jobs. I can see Rangers doing the double this season.
Perfect way to sign off.
If I was Gerrard I would take the job, if you're good enough then you're good enough and although experience is great it is no substitute for skill.
He'd be daft not to take the job imo. I feel people other think these things.

Not exactly an "Aussie plumber" though is he in respect to the rest of the league and him as a manager. Just because you've never heard of him doesn't mean he's a bad manager.
It's not just 1 trophy in 3 and a half seasons though, the fact he's taken Rangers from where they started under him to where they are now. For instance, they were losing in the qualifying rounds of the EL to a part time Luxembourg side, they are now competing in the CL qualifying rounds and managed to progress through the group stages of the EL last season and may do the same again this season. Success isn't all about winning trophies, even at big clubs, depending on the situation you walk into.

Gerrard has done well and was given a decent budget plus time to do so. I would expect better results in Europe as a result although this season has been a struggle for them. If Rangers win league they get direct qualification to the CL this time which is a great incentive than some mid table battle with Everton, Burnley and Leeds.
Why would you expect better results in Europe with what they've got?
Being in the CL with Rangers is a great incentive but there is a better incentive to work in the Premier League I think than in the CL with Rangers. The resource in the PL is far greater than what you'd get with CL + Scottish football, this does seem like the next best step in his career to move to Villa.

I'm more intrigued as a Liverpool fan and him being a future LFC manager how he copes in a genuine title race which he has this season. Couldn't care less if he take Villa to 9th place.

I did also say that it's where he started to where they are now and I did also say that they still have a chance of qualifying this time around as well.
A title race in Scotland is completely different to a title race in England as well, especially when the quality of teams overall is different.

I don't get all this not ready stuff tbh, what's it based on.
Managers put on training sessions, analyse the opposition and their own squad and then put a team out to play a football match. Then there is the more ethereal stuff like motivation of players and so on.
Gerrard was an elite player who played with elite players in an elite setting winning elite competitions. He's not a Tesco worker learning the ropes before he can create a rota and conduct HR meetings. It's football.
In fact there is a school of thought that it is harder to manage at a lower level.

How many managers have successfully stepped up from lower quality leagues directly into a PL job without intermediate steps?
Graham Potter the only example I can think of from current PL managers.
No one is saying he's not ready but also there is no rush. He's not like Rodgers who kept winning trebles at Celtic and got bored so couldnt wait to join Leicester. Gerrard has one less trophy than Callum Davison during his time in Scotland which would follow him if it doesn't go well at Villa.
Win the highly possible league again, take Rangers in the CL for the first time since the 00s and then in summer tell his agent to get him the Newcastle job. The Saudis will sack Howe on the spot.

You would rather Gerrard is involved in a (2 horse) race for the title in Scotland than gain experience in tactically competing with the likes of Klopp, Pep, Conte, Tuchel, Benitez, Rodgers, Biesla, Moyes?
Sorry but I can't understand that at all. The quality of manager in the EPL and the experience he'd gain would be absolutely invaluable.

Err he can do that next season. There is no rush. I would rather see him win things, build on his portfolio and then he can go on a 2 year work experience watching Moyes and the rest.
In summer start at a new club which there will be plenty, get a preseason, his signings and his way of football.

Apologies Fred, think I mis read that.
What I'm saying is yeah, you wanna see a bit of work first but I feel after a couple of years that's likely enough and I feel Gerrards work at Rangers is. Potter did insane work abroad.
But I don't feel some 10 year work experience with clubs that are likely not going to challenge for honours will prove much more myself. It's about players really.

Theoretically he could, if another club was looking for a manager and considered him suitable. But he'd be reliant on another mid-table club (which is where Villa should be) losing manager.
For the experience he'd gain why take that risk. I certainly wouldn't in his position.
This is also about the type of club, Villa are a decent set up with ambitious owners and a good group of players.
And it's not 'work experience watching Moyes and the rest'. Utterly moronic comment that.
The next time someone wants me to do the thread can I have some notice please

Potentially replacing Klopp in 2024 so yeah going to Villa is work experience.
I hope he takes the Villa job which means we can judge him in this league against one of the best tactical managers in the world.
Liverpool shouldn't appoint a manager based on sentiment. It should be on what he has achieved previously.

Mostly all of them??

Some sources close to Villa saying the deal is done and he's just finalising his backroom staff, announcement in next 48 hrs.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You mentioned earlier how well he has done in the EL but this season it's not been that impressive.
I'm more intrigued as a Liverpool fan and him being a future LFC manager how he copes in a genuine title race which he has this season. Couldn't care less if he take Villa to 9th place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You would rather Gerrard is involved in a (2 horse) race for the title in Scotland than gain experience in tactically competing with the likes of Klopp, Pep, Conte, Tuchel, Benitez, Rodgers, Biesla, Moyes?
