I don't think anyone is worried about spending in terms of the amounts, we just don't want the season risked when it was clear as day we needed a midfielder for the first team.

The club always plays this risky game though and to their credit, they more often than not redeem themselves.

It's just looks glaringly amateur when we're not performing to our astronomical levels on the pitch

Kelleher

TAA Gomez Konate Robbo

Elliott New DM Carvalho

Jota Nunez Diaz

Other players of note: Jones, Ramsey, Bajcetic

Now we'll need some more in for sure, and we sign three new players a season at least on average so we obviously will, but this ageing squad thing, despite be the new de rigour whinge, is massively over blown imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That is not a squad that is going to be competing for the league, IMO.

It's obvious Robbing is referring to the squad

Have to say Kash and Titty called it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's obvious we don't compete with big spenders, we haven't for a long time, even before FSG. How is that "calling it"?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Reports would suggest we competed with Utd for Nunez. Reports also suggested City contacted Van Dijk shortly after we messed up the deal the first time.

Utd were also in for Mane before we signed him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think saying that overall we don't compete with the biggest spenders is a factual statement. Of course there are links with other teams. Would you say we competed with Madrid for Tchouameni?

Bellingham now heavily linked with Madrid and suggestions he wants to go there and he will be their top target. Could be nonsense of course but if true then that's us out of that race and I think everybody knows that.

I'd say based on that lineup Robbing has provided that in order to compete for the league we'd need to upgrade at GK, centre back and at least 2 midfielders.

Then add squad depth.

You didn't last year either and said our squad was miles behind City's tbf.

We average spending over £100m a year so in three years time that squad I listed will have likely have had over £300m spent on it.

Only a few months ago we were winning game after ga e with the same midfield situation we have now.

Perhaps there is some confusion between tactics and personel. I'd put our current problem down to tactics first and foremost. When lower half of the table teams are getting in behind our defence with just two passes then it's not about this or that player IMO, it's tactics.

We have added Carvalho too and Elliot has become a regular after being injured for most of last season. We will sign at least one midfielder in January or summer, maybe two, and Milner will leave. Hendo and Fab have been below par this season too, when fit.

£100m a year gross, because we've raked in so much in sales.

Who is being sold to make that £300m?

Fab is the sad one for me, he's been an absolutely wonderful player for us, so reliable even when we were crap in the 2020/21 season but he really hasn't shown up this year.

Last summer is on Klopp as much as it is on the owners. Giving Milner a new contract and then saying we have 8-9 midfielders so no space was a huge mistake. The injury prone lot got injured and then lastminute.com he asks for a new midfielder. FSG had already closed the accounts and we ended up with another hologram in Arthur.

Sums it up tbh

We average over a £100m a year. Selling Neco makes not a jot of difference to us.

Yeah the only core group players we lost were Coutinho, Wijnaldum, Can & Mane.

The others didn't matter

The thing with that NET spend trophy stuff is people include players who were already here when Klopp arrived which doesn't really make sense to me.

So some act like selling all the players Klopp didn't want, taking that money, adding tens of millions to it, and spending on players Klopp does want is somehow a hinderance.

It really isn't. Anyone miss Sakho and Benteke? I don't but I enjoy the £49m that we spend on Diaz.

posted on 6/10/22

Yeah selling fringe players to the tune 50+ mil should be praised...not used in a negative way

posted on 6/10/22

The real measure is total squad cost and the wages they cost if people really want to go down that route, everything else is more than erroneous.

Cba to lay it out but I suspect we're third or fourth for both and top ten in the world too.

That's a reasonable view though isn't it, those midfielders were practically on the cusp of a quadruple last season and it should be enough for 3 different midfields.

Just looks like we're suffering from a physical and mental burnout at the same time as some key injuries - maybe they should have seen it coming but it's only happened once following a season ending in disappointment, and that was arguably triggered by a freak injury on Van Dijk..

"That's a reasonable view though isn't it"

Not really considering the injury record of most of the midfield was public knowledge. I'll be surprised if Keita & Thiago clock the same amount of minutes this season. It's like relying on Gomez & Matip to stay fit as our CB options

posted on 6/10/22

I just see it as a calculated risk since we missed out on Tchouameni - with 5 subs this year I suspect we thought we could manage those more injury-prone players by subbing on Keita or Jones or Milner late-on in games but we've just been very unlucky

posted on 6/10/22

Calculated risks have backfired on us before. We sold Lovren and spent that money on Tsimikas and went into season with 3 CB's expecting VVD to stay fit. The rest as we know is history.
