Such bad planning this season..

posted on 11/10/22

Im not gonna lie, if Salah has another season where he does next to nothing I would sell in the summer.

posted on 11/10/22

His performances are not great but his numbers are still good. I don't want him going anywhere.

We don't have the midfield to play like City or Arsenal...even more so when Thiago is not in the team
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Arsenals midfield is Partey and Xhaka isn't it?

posted on 11/10/22

True...4 goals & 3 assists in 11 appearances.

Even last season from Jan onwards he still got a decent amount of assists

posted on 11/10/22

Still need to give Salah the ball, as much as possible, in the half spaces on the right hand side though. How we're justifying these current tactics is beyond me

Yeah and Odegaard, who's been mad underrated this season...but Arteta's coaching and style of play would emphasize on passing through the midfield with receiving the ball in tight spaces...our midfield was built on different stuff until Thiago arrived.

I would play 442 with Salah and Nunez as the strikers which allows Salah to be closer to the goal and Elliott as the wide midfielder. Gomez and Konate on the right hand side of defence gives us the defensive stability and this allows Elliott more freedom to attack and link up with Salah and Nunez without worrying much about defending. We saw glimpse of it in the first half against Arsenal when we defended in a 442 shape with Jota and Nunez and later on with Firmino instead of Jota.

Yeah fair point, I too like Odegaard.

Goals ain't really the problem for us anyway is it.

What's bugged me is just the simple things.

Take Arsenal's second goa. They worked so hard to get back into the game and have managed it (again, fair play on that really).

So we leave two defenders back from our own free kick a minute before half time up against Martinelli, Saka and Jesus (I think even Gabriel got up there before half our players).

That's just amateur football really isn't it. Who the actual fvck organised that?

posted on 11/10/22

City players would have fouled Martinelli the moment he touched the ball. Take the yellow and move on to the second half.

How often are we opening up defences with our pace though?

From their corners, yeah we still use that tactic quite a bit. Maybe in the bigger games but against 80% of the opposition we just camp outside their box most of the time probing for an opening

its the norm for players like thiago matip keita ox jones tbf i expect nothing else.

We always used to do this, but had the energy levels to get back and stop the attack, plus Fabinho who'd just take a yellow.

We don't have the energy anymore.

Nah. What in the space of 8 weeks?

I'll subscribe to us not being fit enough but something as flaky as energy levels I cannot buy into myself.

Hopefully we bring someone in during January and I think we will. Having that impetus, much like Diaz brought, would be no bad thing.

Yeah I was furious, absolute schoolboy stuff.
I’ve mentioned it before but it’s the type of thing you expect from relegation sites not title challenging material. Shambolic.

Some of the stats that have been posted on here actually point to relegation numbers stat wise defensively.

I mentioned a couple of seasons back before but the difference this time is that I/we/anyone whatsoever seemingly anyone don't actually know what the issue is.

Before it was we simply needed defenders. Now? I haven't got a clue tbh. Seems to be a whole mixture of little things.

Yep

Aging squad
The decline of Salah/VVD
Key players dropping off
Injuries
New players
Mane departure
Bad summer transfer window
Terrible pre season which collided with the actual season

I'm still not buying this Paul Merson excuse that losing Mane is costing us.

Its obvious that its a factor, but the cracks are far deeper than that IMO.

But when he was out of form for overt a year we kept winning. This is defo more deeper than selling 1 player.

I think the mental side is likely causing a lot of our defensive issues.

That 2nd goal for example with Trent going over to Martinelli. To me that was 100% Trent wanting to make an impact by sprinting over and tackling him, whereby if it came off he stops the goal and gets praised. He was trying to be proactive but the obvious play would have been to just stay in the middle.

When things are going well defending is almost second nature, but when things are going bad you constantly second guess everything.
