Yeah, Napoli doing the double over Ajax was always the best case scenario. If we beat Rangers we'll need just 1 point to secure a spot in the next round. One leg in the next round if all goes to plan and these days it doesn't seem to matter too much whether you finish 1st or 2nd in the group.

From there you never know what might happen.

6-8 weeks isn't as bad. If he needed an operation he would have been out until Feb. Still a disaster for us. Relying on Bobby to continue his purple patch as Nunez settles.

Salah as we know is out of form while Jota has not found the net since February.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was amazed that we didn’t sign another forward player.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Were you? We’ve signed two in two windows, as well as Carvalho.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So Carvalho is ready to go and play a part then?

We needed imo a ready to go forward who can cover the front three like Mane could.

I hope you are right and Carvalho steps up to the plate now in Diaz’s absence

We do need a forward who can play on the right. Especially with Mo out of form. The likes of Jota, Diaz, Carvalho and even Nunez prefer the left.

That is one for next summer though.

Yep agreed!

I would start playing Harvey Elliot in his old position RWF

Elliot has zero pace. It would have been Diaz but he's injured so now we are looking at Jota.

Diaz was the Mane replacement. Nunez will likely slot in on the left with Jota/Firmino through the middle. I never said that Carvalho was signed as a ready made starter, but you can’t sign a player for every eventuality. This is the first time since we’ve signed him that Salah has had a big dip in his figures, we were never going to sign a high value player to cover him because he’s always been an ever present starter.

Normally I'd agree about Elliott but with the tactical switch to salah this season I don't think his lack of pace would be an issue.

Can't remember Salah using his pace too much this season.

Yeah it’s an option as it just isn’t working out for Salah atm, we need other options in that position.

I think Eliiott has the skill to beat his man 1v1 if he can isolate them out wide like we are trying this season...so I dont necessarily see pace as a major problem.

I would also say he lacks the positioning or movement to play out wide but with the tactics we've been trying this season, you don't even need that. Just stay wide and come infield when the ball reaches your feet.

I would try it in the cups just to see how he interprets the role

Elliott could be our bernardo silva obviously long way to go but ive been impressed by his work rate even if a little ineffective defensively at times but hes got real quality on the ball and is tenacious. Really should be a coaches dream to have to mould at such a young age. Same with Carvalho and the others, why they need to find a system for them going forward and nunez, not salah and thiago etc.

Diaby from Leverkusen. Mudryk is playing well in the CL but he prefers the left.

We should have gone for Adeyemi. He was outstanding against Bayern last weekend.

Pace on the wings is what made us one of the best teams in the world. Elliott isn't a winger.

Matip injured now

Out for two weeks.

He has been shiitt though so not a massive loss.

posted on 11/10/22

How often are we opening up defences with our pace though?

From their corners, yeah we still use that tactic quite a bit. Maybe in the bigger games but against 80% of the opposition we just camp outside their box most of the time probing for an opening

posted on 11/10/22

Diaz aside, ironically our injuries might actually make us better

Konate and Gomez for Matip and Trent could make us more solid.

Salah pace threat is there. It is an outlet. VVD looks for that pass all the time. Elliott is just not a wide player so should not be tried.

posted on 11/10/22

again our wide players used to cut in and our width came from robbo and trent. robbo and mane had a good partnership too.

Hell I think Minamino could have done a job this season, just another option to try something different, especially with Diaz out.

Guess we go back to 433 again or:

Hendo Thiago
Salah Jota/Firmino Carvalho
Nunez

Didn't Firmino play on the wing for Hoffenheim at times

posted on 11/10/22

It'll be Jota and Carvalho playing left surely. Nunez at times too, certainly in match if not on paper.

It's more against teams who want to attack like City, Arsenal, Chelsea and other top teams in Europe.
Mane and Salah were great at this in their first few seasons.

I can't see Elliott or Carvalho being effective at this in our current attacking and pressing template where the winger is wider positioned. City doesn't need quick wingers as they play a more patient technical game which is all about one touch football in the final third.
Elliott and Carvalho should only play in the role Jota played against Arsenal. Odegaard is a similar player and he plays the same role for Arsenal.

posted on 11/10/22

If we don't have the players to play a certain way then I feel we should maybe not play that way.

Although I do think Elliot can do a job on the right but I do agree with the above, that would require a more patient build up at times.

It's tricky but I expect us to go into the market in January now.

We don't have the midfield to play like City or Arsenal...even more so when Thiago is not in the team
