You're both right, going for the title was unchartered territory for Rodgers and he did very well but at the same time naivity let him down at crucial times.

Maybe we just have a different understanding of the word naive. I don't regard it as a negative - an insult, or indeed something intending to belittle. I simply regard it as something to learn from. An area which can be improved on.

Let me put it another way - Brendan can learn from this season. He can improve. He did make mistakes and he can become better as a result. You (correctly) say that Brendan is a young manager. Young is often synonymous with being naive. Can Brendan improve? Yes I think he can. More importantly, I think he has the capability to improve, and is humble enough to realise that he can get better. The meaning of the word naive relates to all of that. He will become much more experienced as time goes on. And as a result may very well become a much better manager than he is at present.

Good post Ripley.

For the record I think Pel was naive when he thought teams near the bottom of the Prem would just roll over for us in the early stages of the season.

fair enough ripley cant argue with that, i guess i look at the term slightly differently but no matter good post

We probably do interpret the term differently, but that aside, I do think we are essentially of the same opinion. My intent wasn't to belittle Rodgers in anyway, and in fairness, words such as "naive" can potentially suggest otherwise. All said and done though, great season for Liverpool, and a great season for Rodgers.

Ripleys I get what you are saying but how can you call him tactically naieve when he was able to adjust his tactics mid game, or use a different tactic to counter certain opponents?

Sorry but to call a man naieve when he's come second in the league, and been widley praised for his ability to switch it during games is simply wrong.

He's made mistakes and will make more in the future but naieve! Come off it he's tactically very sound.

You mean the way he adjusted his tactics while winning 3-0 to obtain a 3-3 draw? Very tactically sound

I love it when BP does his rounds and gives everyone a virtual slapping.

If you have the second best player in every position, the second best subs, and the second best manager, odds are you'll win the league comfortably.

Because generally speaking everyone who you're competing against will have 4th, 5th...7th 'best' players scattered about and sporadic depth despite having the 'best' centremid, striker, keeper,or supersub.

that's why the team of the season is usually scattered across a lot of different clubs.

City:

Most expensive squad - No

Biggest squad - No

Strongest squad - Possibly but open to debate.

Best squad - I think so and certainly the most succesful this season but once more, open to debate.

By and large Boris, you finish according to where you are in the wage bill league.

posted on 15/5/14

Not really, we were paying wages to about 4/5 players who were at other clubs and didn't make a single appearance for us which is why our wages were so high and we finished 2nd anyway that year.

As stated, the Pool in the crosshairs!
