we should have at least 5 but its a cup competition so anything can happen

The ones I remember:

96/97
01/02
09/10

Were all excellent chances for us to win it.

I'd say we were simply outclassed in the two finals against Barca, though things might have been different had we taken advantage of our early domination in Rome (and had Ronaldo not been so determined to simply outshine Messi - I was furious with him after that game)

All ifs, buts and maybes though.

After the treble we should of made our European mark on the CL.

Other than that I cant fault United or Ferguson with regards to our chances against possibly the best football team I've ever seen in Barcelona.

The CL is ,in general, lot better nowadays what with so much competition.
I dont think we'll get one team dominating over a period of success, the closest was Barca and like mentioned they were a truly, truly special team.

Cant wait until Saturday btw.

From the ones I can remember I think we could have easily won the 2000 CL as we were knocked out against a quite average Real side. Could have won in 2009 as well but just didn't perform in the final. CR7 trying to win it on his own didn't help either. Could also have done better with the 93-94 squad but the foreigner rule didn't help at all. SAF did become a better tactician in latter days and I think had we played a bit more of a cagey game around the turn of the millennium that is where we could have made our mark. Sadly wasn't to be.

Should have won in 2010 but NOT in 1999

It is interesting how you see where you should have won but lost. But you completely ignore where you did win but should have lost. I.e. 1999. Fans of other clubs are no different, mind you'll

..............

Ok, I will bite, why shouldn't we have won in 1999?

thank goodness for Barcelona, because were it not for them we would be talking about utd players being considered the best ever and talking about the achievements of lord Ferguson.

2001/02 and 2002/03 were frustrating because of the location of the finals.

2001/02 We should have gone past Leverkusen and then who knows what could have been in Glasgow.

I know we got easily beaten by Real the season after but they weren't as good a Real as people made out which was witnessed by them going out in the next round. Winning it at OT would have been great.

I'm sure many of us are claiming we COULD have won it had luck gone our way. Bayern fans would have every right to suggest they would have won it in '99 had luck gone their way, they completely battered us for 90 minutes in the final but didn't take their chances, much luck over the years when people claim we COULD have won the CL.

Stating that "the sun is always shining" means that things go our way, so we'll keep the 1999 one and the 2008 pens. And the Eusebio miss in 1968!

In 1999, United were the best team in the CL by a long way, and the most exciting. They won in less than convincing fashion, but they were all over BM for the 2nd half.

Something that's often overlooked: BM's free kick should never have been awarded, and they sat on that for the whole game (albeit with some counter attacks)

It is a total myth that United were outgunned in that match. Given United's record in the CL of never giving up, it was very brave of Munich to try and keep us at bay, and it was lucky they managed it for as long as they did.

For a few seasons we had Keane, Scholes, Giggs, Beckham and Veron in midfield with RVN up top. It's just a shame that during that time our defence weren't top class and/or inconsistent. Rio was obviously there in 02/03 but didn't really have a consistent partner until Vidic. Still no matter what the 99 and 08 wins are still major highlights and in a tough CL era where no one club has truly dominated it's good to have won the competition. The best thing as well is that we were deserving winners on both occassions when we won it (deserving in terms of being the best team over the course of a season)

Have you actually watched the game??
United had more shots, mores possession, and territorial advantage!!!

Vidicschin - totally outplayed in the final until the last 5 minutes. Bayern's miss numerous chances to go 2-0 up and finally win on two strikes.

Bayern, IMO, could count themselves unlucky in 99 in the final based on the chances they had. However, I don't think people remember their very late equaliser in the group stages in Munich that year as well as their offside goal. Had Bayern not been able to get a result in that match they would probably have gone out having lost their first game away to Brondby.

or the fact that the best team ever to play the game was wiped out in 1958, when they were on the threshold of dominating Europe for a decade
...........................................

Do you care to tell us how this is a fact? Anything will do.

Which was the one they went out to the Robben volley? They should have won that game were it not for the individual mistakes.

BM sat back most of the game, and were constantly thwarted by the offside trap. Two chances is hardly numerous is it. Although I admit that "2" is a number.

People recall several things about that match, usually pertinent to woodwork, and two late goals. And then they build their own picture of what happened.

You ask any United fan now whether they would have rather won 6-0, very few of them would change it!

You could argue that up until the 99 final Bayern were the best team in Europe. They were also up for the treble, won our CL group beating Bayern home and away (I think) as well as knocking out an excellent Kiev.

The fine lines between success and failure mean we will be in the record books for our treble while Batern only won a Bundesliga. On their day they were just as good as us that season, a real beast of a team which was why they won the CL not long after.

Are you serious, we won the game because we scored more goals but for 90 minutes Bayern battered us.

"You could argue that up until the 99 final Bayern were the best team in Europe."

They lost to Brondby, and struggled in both games against us (but had slices of fortune that evened themselves out! What would the odds be on a Teddy Sherinham o.g. stoppage time equaliser?!). I believe they beat Barca in one of the games, fair enough. But United should have beaten them too. Again, what were the odds on two 3-3 draws!

I think it's still fair to say that over that season (and CL campaign) United were the best team. And before we discuss "luck" any further, we had no pens that seasons or o.g.s or dodgy decisions.

If you want to talk about "lucky" look at the Inter game in the second leg. I would say we were more lucky in that game than any others.

..................

Bayern played us three times that season, but failed to beat us on each occasion.

In the final thay didn't batter us for 85 minutes what so ever. They scored early on and defended that lead for most of the match. Late in the game was when they had two clear cut chances to put the game to bed.

They didn't. Tough s h it.
