And what about the 2 shots off the woodwork in the last 15 minutes you can't remember?

I think it's fair to say there's a number of occasions where we've been on the end of unfortunate circumstance.

Porto 2004,
Bayern 2010,
*Barca 2011,
Real Madrid 2013,

*And as i argued, one of the Barca finals could slip in there, especially the second one.

We should have knocked out Leverkusen, Porto and Monaco.

I could trawl the net to pretend that I knew the exact timings of the attempts, but even if they were as late as the 75+ minute, they were certainly rare counter-attacks.

So to answer the OP's question...

I think we should be looking at 2 more CL wins in reality. Certainly one, but probably 2 under Fergie's reign.

I forgot that. Monaco 1998!
And the pesky away goal. How many times has that been our undoing!! At least 4 times just to my memory (which, as 1982 points out, is not flawless!).

That Inter team wasn't as good as the Juve team from 95-97 or Real's team in '02, there were harder obstacles to overcome in those seasons than in '10 IMO.

I think you underrate that Inter side. They were very, very good.

Leverkusen also gave Madrid a run for their money in the 02 final. They weren't exactly an unstoppable force.

Or you could just look to my post about 15 minutes ago where I clearly stated when they happened.

Can you imagine if THAT Barca side weren't around, we could of had 3 in a row (I know it isn't that simple).

As mentioned earlier in the thead, we could be talking about the great Utd side had things been a little different.

Busbybabes,

On paper we should have beaten Leverkusen but for me, at that time, Fergie hadn't really mastered the art of European football. The slower pace, the more conservative and tactical approach... So for me I don't feel too bothered about some of those earlier knock outs. The Porto one was awful though. The disallowed Scholes goal and the poor quality of the teams left in the competition...

With respect, your memory was giving you details of a game that nobody else ever saw, so I didn't take it as gospel.

I think we'd have beaten Madrid in '02

Anybody else's reply button not working on iphone?

Where did I claim away goals are not a flaw???

I think that it is fashionable to say this because they won it. But had we met them in the 2nd round, United would have been strong favourites. I remember them talking about potential opponents after the group stages, and they were listed as a side that United would beat comfortably. Didn't we outplay them home and away the previous year?

They kindly got rid of Barca for us, and we failed to hold our end of the bargain!!

Bayern on the other hand scored 1 and hit the woodwork twice.

...........

And that was it. Other than that big Pete had very little to do.

This isn't what I would call a battering, under any stretch of imagination.

You obviously didn't see the game and have been duped into thinking we were getting battered by WUM fans.

I think that Inter side were very beatable as well. They set up against Barca the same way we should have done in the 2011 final.

Have you forgotten what you wrote 2 minutes ago, why did your room me regarding away goals when I have not mentioned it once?

"How Many CLs Should United Have Won?"

The number they actually won.

Just as it is for every other team that has won it, or not won it.

Ridiculous question, and responses.

I cannot explain it any more clearly! Just re-read the comment. I was referring to my memory.

If I wanted the opinion of a half wit I still wouldn't have asked you, as that would lead people to think you possess half a wit. And we all know that would be an utter lie.

I'm sure you can stretch the sinews of your imagination slightly more than that. Just read the article.

I draw your attention to the word "if".

That '99 team was truly excellent. That said, bayern were the better team for 90 minutes (take the red tinted glasses off), only the most amazing period of injury time prevented that. However that come back just showed how remarkable that team was, in terms of pure spirit and desire, amongst the class that enabled them to pull it off.

Perhaps one more CL trophy would have been just.

It's not red-tinted. I would be more than happy to sit here laughing about how we were trounced in the final, only to steal it in the dying embers of the game. But it just is not true.

At best I would say it was pretty even.
