GAME PLAN
I want us to play a direct pressing game. This will entail moving the ball about quickly and getting it to our target player as soon as possible. I want us to use the wings as much as possible when on the attack. We must close down the opposition with immediate effect, pressuring them off the ball and forcing mistakes. The centre of the field will have players capable of winning the midfield battle by using their physique, skill and power to overrun the opposition. This game is all about limiting their options at the centre of the field and then releasing the ball to the creative players. We have slightly less pace on the pitch than usual but we will be able to use our winners to open up the opposition. They will be looking to move the ball forward as quick as possible so by using the skill of our players, we can take advantage of any space left.
Off the ball we need to force them into making mistakes. This means keeping the game tight and stopping the opposition any freedom on the ball. Push the opposition out wide and back towards their goal. I want them to be so pressured that every time they collect the ball there is someone on them. I want them to get frustrated and physical so we increase the chances of them having a player sent off.
I want us to play dirty in order to get the frustration out of them and open more space for our side to take advantage of. This means being a bit extra physical in our tackles. I also want us to look for a penalty when in the box by diving when possible. We need to get the goals so if the opportunity arises we need to take advantage of it.
If we are winning from the 70th minute I want us to start to keep the ball for longer periods and hold possession. Slow play right down and seriously time waste.
Positional Tactics
Our full backs defensively need to push the opposition back and reduce the space made available on this side of the pitch. They need to prevent the wingers from running in behind them and cutting inside of them. They need to cancel them out and limit the opportunities for them to make runs and collect the ball in good areas. Offensively they will need to move forward with the ball and use up the space left by the opposition. When our wingers cut in, I want our full backs to take up the wide position and put the crosses in.
Our centre backs need to keep with the strikers, stay in command of their play. We need to limit the opportunity for them to find space by keeping goal side of them at all times. They need to use their height and strength to beat them off the ball. They also must be aware of any high balls into the box and runners that have cut inside. Offensively only go up for corners.
We will play a defensive midfielder today who will protect the defence and hold up play. This means filling the gaps and creating a defensive wall to stop the opposition from breaking through. Coquelin must keep with the playmaker by discouraging him from moving into space, limit the chances he's able to create and keeping goal side of him at all times. Limit the available players for them, and force them to pass the ball back. Offsensively I will not allow Coquelin to go forward. Ramsey has the freedom to move forward in order to create that extra option. He needs to control play more by creating and forming the attacks. He should look to move forward to be the new option.
Our attacking midfielder will be Silva who will look to run into space and finding the opportunity to change and dictate the game. He must force the opposition to open up space and allow the attacking players to break through. I want him to move about all across the centre and depending on move towards the right or the left to the ball. Defensively he must prevent people running forward and creating more ability for runs. He must try and collect the ball and release it to our wingers to form attacks since.
Our wingers need to use plenty of their skill, strength, power, pace and physicality to open up the opposition. I want them to force the attacks straight at them, bring the defenders out and then allow our attackers to take advantage. They must cut inside, run in from behind and cross the ball in so that our attacks don't end up predictable. Try and use our full backs as much as possible when attacking the opposition so that having to handle more than one player forces a mistake. Defensively they should fall back and help the full backs to defending and prevent the wingers from creating opportunities. Ronaldo should stay further forward as most players will look to leave the ball for him in the next attack.
Our striker needs to use their brain to workout how the defence works. They need to run at them using their strength and skill to cause nerves in their defence and force mistakes. The striker needs to open up space and find space as he is good at getting On the end of crosses and opportunities created. He needs to use his height to open the scoring and also use his power to force his way into goal scoring opportunities. Defensively I want him to move back to the centre circle and wait for the midfield to supply the ball to him in the event of an attack, if after 70 mins and we are winning I want the striker to move further back to control and protect the nation. We just time waste as much as possible.

General:
Aston Villa’s set-up will be reminiscent to the Dutch team in the 2014 World Cup. A back three, two central midfielders, 2 wing backs, a 10 and two centre forwards. Aston Villa’s back three can situationally morph into a back five with the wing backs dropping into the defensive line. Aston Villa’s 3-2 defensive block will allow easy circulation of the ball in the defensive area due to the natural positioning of the players in this system. This team will be one that presses in defensive phase, one which moves the ball quickly in transition phase and one which circulates the ball to open spaces. The 3 up front will look to take up good positions and cover space, reducing possible passes for the opposition team. The ball will be moved quickly when Aston Villa regain possession to take advantage of opened up space with the opposition not in their normal defensive structure. Both forwards need to make sure they run into wide areas where the full backs are probably missing and get a 1v1 with the centre halves where one could put the ball in and while the other gets into the box, link up with full backs when they come forward as well. The centre midfielder and the number 10 will get up to support the attack. Defending the 18 yard line is the main aim and will limit the opposition to long shots. All players stick to positions and won’t be dragged out of position. If the opposition want to play fancy passing and have 90% possession, let them, but our team will be compact not allowing anything to get into the 18 yard box.
Navas:
Claim crosses if possible. Always clear lines, and hoof up the pitch towards the strikers whenever possible. The ball must stay clear of the 18 yard box at all times. Communication is key with centre halves to avoid confusion when deciding who claims a loose ball / cross.
Can and Koscielny:
Deals with opposition attackers. Koscielny keeps an eye on their attacking midfielder when he gets close to the 18 yard line. Koscielny will also mark their striker closely not allowing him space to turn. Koscielny or Kroos will deal with knock-downs to their supporting player depending on who is closer. Can will try and win headers when long balls are played towards the back line. Can will not be as aggressive but step up to attack players that come down his side. Koscielny will be the centre half who steps up and clears up balls before it reaches their attackers, but must only go if he’s 100% sure he’ll get it. Both will protect the central centre half to the best of their abilities. Go up for corners.
Toprak:
Sits in line with the other two centre halves, he is not a sweeper. Will try and win headers when long balls are played towards the back line. Will also clean up any balls / players who manage to get through the other two centre halves. Go up for corners.
Zabaleta and Shaw:
Will both go forwards and support the attack. Will also act as extra bodies in midfield to help with holding onto the ball. Can drop into a back 5 if necessary. Main aim is to provide width and thump in crosses at every opportunity. Shoot if there is a clear sight of goal. Stays back for corners. Must not commit to tackles otherwise wingers will skip past them, just stay close, limit their space and show them onto their weaker foot.
Kroos and Koke:
Sits deep, breaks up play and snap at their heels then break with the ball. Kroos is an engine that can cover a lot of ground when defending. Koke will buzz around and dictate play, bursting forwards at times to provide an extra body in attack. Koke will be a bit ahead of Kroos to be more involved in exchanging passes with full backs / De Bruyne, even going level with De Bruyne at times to use his incredible vision to find teammates. Kroos stays close to the centre halves. Both sprays balls wide to wing backs and directly to the front 3. Kroos stays back for corners. Will not allow the opposition any time on the ball in front of centre halves. Kroos sticks to position when wing backs fly forwards, providing cover if needed. Kroos will stand outside the box during set pieces to smack in rebounds if not taking a set piece.
De Bruyne:
Will constantly hit balls towards both strikers and if not possible, to the wing backs flying forwards. The number 10 will press the opposition along with the the other midfielders when without the ball. Will stand outside the box if not taking a set piece to hit a rebound.
Lacazette and Reus:
Holds up play for the support midfielders and spray the ball wide to wing backs when they come forward, if not then they will pull wide to exploit attacking space. Get into the box at every opportunity when their partner pulls out to wide areas. Both should be able to play quick one-twos with each other if they happen to be close to each other. Both will play on the shoulder of the opposition defence and will attempt at times to get in the space between centre halves and full backs, if there isn’t a lot of space. Their pace will allow long balls to be launched occasionally to them.
SUBS:
Winning/Drawing:
75 mins: De Bruyne OFF Fernandinho ON
Fernandinho replaces De Bruyne and will slot into centre midfield to shore up the midfield and to help keep the ball better in order to close the game out. Proper 3 in midfield.
Losing:
75 mins: De Bruyne OFF Dost ON
Essentially going 3-4-3 where Dost will join Lacazette and Reus up front. Offers the option for the others to find him to run onto the ball and to lump the ball to him.
Team:
-------------------- Caballero -------------
Marquinhos -- Ramos -- Cahill ------ J.Bernat
---------- Fernando.R --- I.Rakitic ------
Jovetic --------- Carlos Tevez ------ F.Ribery
------------------- Harry Kane -----------------
Subs bench :
Johnson, Sagna, Paulista, Coentrao, Wilshere, Pastore, Bacca
---------------------------
Subs:
C.Bacca > Kane – 70th minute – Bacca is a real physical presence up front and great in and around the box so I want him leading the line and getting at them as much as possible.
Pastore > Jovetic – 70th minute – Pastore play in a similar style, v direct and creating openings.
Wilshere > Rakitic (80th min+ (if winning) - Wilshere look to press and ensure we're dominating.
------------------------
The outline:
A massive game this as we know our season boils down it, so what do we do we go in with a side that has experience, leaders, form players who will graft down both ends of the pitch, pace down the flanks from both fb's and wingers and clinical finishers all hopefully proving the best receipt of success in today’s game.
Work rate and energy will be key today from the very 1st minute we need to be on our toes looking to press and manipulating proceedings, I want us first to everything signalling a positive intent and spreading that morale and ethic to everyone out there that this is a key game and we need to win at all costs.
Defensively we need to work as a unit from Ramos setting the example at the back to Kane and Tevez not allowing them to play out from the back, we force errors and keep their attacking threat to a minimum.
Attack wise we must pay with intent but mix it up on a constant basis so we’re not predictable, width is key however we can play long into Kane with Tevez in the ‘hole’, I want Rakitic bossing the midfield and feeding it selectively whilst Ramos and Cahill amongst others are both threats from set pieces.
-----------------------------------
Individual tactics:
Caballero comes into the side for today’s game. He has a real presence in and around his box so he must command well today, very vocal, quick off his feet and distribution swift and on point.
FB’s both very solid defensively and must look to keep it simple today, we need to present from the outset that it will take an almost striking effort to get past these two, I want us to get as physical as possible looking to muscle them off the ball and pushing them out wide so they have as little space as possible to work with whilst ensuring putting in a decent delivery is as difficult as possible. Our wingers need to assist them as much as possible doubling up on the opposition’s and not giving an inch so we can prevent them cutting inside and imposing themselves whilst limiting 2 on 1 situations.
Ramos and Cahill add additional layers to our defensive solidarity, Ramos is as committed as they come and should look to lead the line. He’s responsible for marking their main striker today and should firmly look to get stuck in going toe to toe with every challenge and pushing him back as much as possible, Ramos is a tough nut and one of the best when it comes to adapting to a physical nature so will put his body on the line for his side today. Cahill partners Ramos and is entirely in his comfort zone. He should look to keep an eye on second runners and look to keep everything in check generally staying alert to any danger and covering Ramos's tracks through his more substantial pace and mobility.
Fernando adds force and bite to our midfield, He should look to flex his muscles and get snapping at heels. He must work tirelessly for the full 90 with his intensive pressing setting the perfect example to others as we work collectively to keep them out. I.Rakitic partners and I want him to support Fernando as much as possible whilst playing in a more box to box role looking to run his socks off adding as much as possible to our play down both ends. Rakitic also adds so much creativity to the side so I want him dictating the tempo to our needs looking to make himself available at all times, getting our forward players in time and space and in short running the show.
Jovetic comes into the side, a nimble player with great footwork I want him very direct looking to use his drive to fly past challenges and opening up the game so others have the space and time when they receive the ball. Ribery has a similar role on the left, I want him taking on his FB as much as possible and mixing it up with deliveries, occasionally cutting inside to good measure with the support of Bernat in behind. C.Tevez starts in a more centrally attacking role today, I want him up and down that pitch supporting our play in every means possible, attacking wise looking to make himself a link in between our wingers so he is always available for a pass on the edge of the box and taking the burden of Kane occupying their defenders and riling them both on and off the ball.
H.Kane is the perfect foil for us up top today. He will defiantly get the better of defenders as he is strong, energetic, powerful and can hold his own. He’s able to score all types of goals and is a very willing runner pressing from the front. He’ll look to link-up with others as much as possible holding up the ball and bringing others into play generally influencing our play as much as possible.

Darmian--Zouma--Laporte--A.Sandro

El Ghazi-------Barkley-------M.Depay
---------------A.Morata----------------
Berahino, Solanke,
A chance to see how our second string get along, they have the opportunity to show me they are capabale of stepping up.
We go out to play our usual fast, free flowing football, nothing changes in that aspect, when we attack we do it as fluid as possible, we dont want to dither on the ball, make desicions quickly, pass and move, defensively we do it as a team, 451 with the wingers tracking back leaving the CF up top, we close everything down, and really pressurise them into mistakes
Mvogo is a very agile GK, can get around the area very quickly and close down strikers, his huge frame makes life difficult for the opposition, will release the ball early to the wide players.
Back four s young but confident, Darmian and Alex Sandro and fullback love to attack but as always we stress only one attacks at a time. We cannot allow ourselves to be exposed at the back with any quick counters by them. Stick to there wingers, push them out wide and stop them cutting in and becoming a danger. Attack, support the wingers, get to there outside giving them an option, if you do recieve the ball , fire in crosses to the CF.
Laporte man marks the CF and Zouma sits spare, these two are the future so will look to put on a dominate display, Laporte wont give the CF any time to manouvre his way into goal by pushing him back wards, not physically but positionally he will force him back not allowing him the freedom of the final third, always watching him even if we are attacking. Zouma the spare man will take a step back and watch to see how things progress, will be there to help other defenders if they lose there man. Will attack all high balls and any big men that come up for set plays, he himself will go up for corners.
Witsel and Marchisio are solid enough in the middle can both defend and attack, so defensively, without the ball Witselwill look to pick up the AM and Marchisio the 2nd most attacking threat from nmidfiled, the two work perfectly together and on the same wavelength, onto there players very quickly and do not allow them to dictate play. and pressurise them into stupid passes as they panic, attacking ONE moves forward the other stays back, both can do it and have the energy to do so , so get up and support the forwards, awaiting any ball that comes out and shoot if possible, both hvae good shots., Look to bring the others into the game, with nice quick passing.
This is a chance for El Ghazi to show his worth, with Depay on the left the two want to showcase there talent, Lamela aint even on the bench as we put trust in our two young Dutch wingers, quick, skillfull and both with a very good eye for goal, love taking players on with pace. Play with no fear, take players on, if it doesnt work, track back and follow the players who has the ball, always fighting. Keep trying it will pay off. Take them on down the line with support from fullbacks, if they arent there quick one twos with Barkley and drive into the box and take a pop at goal. Defend the lines in and get back and support the fullbacks when they have.
Barkley is a free role, help out defensively and support |Morata as much as possible, look for the ball as much as possible, alot will go through him wether its a through ball to Morata and he drives on, or quick passes to the wingers freeing them up, or playing the ball down the line for them to chase. Always has his head up looking for that desicive ball. When defending thre will be one midfielder left for them, so get onto him quickly and dont allow him to start attacks from deep.
Morata has everything, cna hold it up, take players on with pace and a great eye for goal. Always on the last man pushing the Cbs back making them play a deep line, look to spin off his marker when Barkle plays the through ball. if nothing on look for the wingers driving in as well as Barkley and look to lay it off for them. Even without the ball, look to split the Cbs or drag them out of position freeing up space for others.

A makeshift team to see how some of the sgquad pkayers get on
Play to the strengths so ball at feet and look to pass there way through the opposition, A stong back four Inigo is captain and he sits spare while Juan Jesus picks up the CF, Inigo just keeps an eye on any others coming through or our defenders losing there players. Fullbacks stay tight and only attack when in no danger, when they do support the wingers best they can by driving out wide. A strong keeper behind the thenm
Casemiro and McCarthy are solid Casemitro is energetic and wont give anything up as he tracks the AM, get right into his face, McCarthy is just as feisty and the two will be tough to break down, once they have nice easy balls to the forward four.
Januzaj and Bolasie are quick and skillfull very direct and play wih no fear, its a friendly so who cares, drive at the fullbacks, take them on, use Vazquez as a pivot to pass and drive into the box to support Dybala. Pass and move, duck and dive tear them a new one..this is your chance to prove yourelf for the forthcoming season, help defend when you have too
Vazquez our No.10, in a free role support his mate Dybala like he did at Palermo, the two are a viscous partnership, full of goals and support each other so well, know there movements and exact mindset. get the through balls to Dybala and move up onto his shoulder to support him.
Dybala a very highly rated young lad, goes into the season as our No.1 striker but with Gignac breathing down his neck he has to hit the ground running. Full of movement, Vazquez will find him so he needs to get into free space which will allow him a pop at goal. A man in great form and high in confidence which every striker needs.

A mix of big names and some younger players looking to earn themselves a place in the squad for next season.
We will start in our usual formation and look to press quickly and stretch the game by getting the ball into wide areas where we look to overload, with FB running beyond and AM coming across to support the man on the ball. Pressing higher up allows us to spring defence into attack at extreme pace and take advantage of the flair players we have going forward, getting plenty of balls into the box and using one twos around the area to work chances. If we have to keep possession we will do so, we have the players for a more patient approach when needed.
Defensively we are always solid, lots of power in midfield and the work rate to go with it in order to keep the opposition out. The two CMs provide a shield who will break up attacks and release the forwards, looking to overpower the midfield. The defence stay narrow, Fb and CB joined together so there are no gaps, if one is beaten he has his partner in position to recover.

Friendly vs Stoke

-------------------------Vietto
Subs: Valdes, Ginter, Höjbjerg, Klaassen, De Arrascaeta, Kampl, Rolan
Captain: Hector Herrera
Corners: Lucas Moura (Kampl) / Felipe Anderson
Free Kicks: Firmino
From kick off we’ll have a ‘pressing’ 3-1-5-1 formation with the aim of playing a nice passing game and using our obvious pace to get the opposition on the back foot, with the ultimate aim of causing some serious damage to Stoke’s back line.
Muslera is a gifted composed keeper who commands his area, and distributes the ball in a very intelligent and effective manner.
The trio of Jedvaj, Süle and Wimmer are composed young defenders who will look to play a low risk, sensible defensive game. There is no need for risk taking, as they will find support from Matías Kranevitter when required and they will always have plenty of options when looking to distribute the ball. All 3 are strong in the air and equally technically gifted with the ball at their feet.
In front of this defensive trio, Kranevitter will play as the defensive midfielder who if required will be comfortable in slipping into the defence (a la Mascherano style). Kranevitter is a great tackler, has a big engine and is also a great passer of the ball. He will keep the ball moving with neat tidy passing, whilst not doing anything too extravagant and fancy, and he is more than capable of getting stuck in the nitty gritty of things.
In front of Kranevitter we have Geis and Hector Herrera who are both fine passing footballers. They will look to play a quick passing style of play, playing beautifully timed balls for Lucas Moura on the right, Felipe Anderson on the left and Firmino down the centre to run onto.
When we are on the back foot so to speak Geis and Herrera will drop much deeper and so on – technically becoming a 3-3-3-1 formation. We aim to use this flexibility to tinker with the formation according to how the game pans out.
Geis and Herrera have more than enough pace to get back into shape again and thwart any possible counters.
Lucas Moura, Firmino & Felipe Anderson have no defensive worries in this match. They are purely here to batter opponents with wave and wave of tidy pacy attacks. All three are extremely talented individuals with fantastic pace and skills. The ability to go past a player, take on defence and to play the sort of tricks that will wrong foot the opposition. They are as equally at home at making assists for Luciano Vietto and each other as they are at creating chances for themselves.
All 3 have tremendous engines and the intentions are to batter the opposition back line until they have no option but to submit to this constant attacking threat from the right, left and straight down the middle.
Luciano Vietto’s movement, technique and clinical finishing are hallmarks of his game, and whilst he is certainly quick, as the old adage goes the first two yards are in your head and Vietto’s intelligence and off the ball movement often allows him to steal a march on defenders. With licence to drop deep and combine with our 3 Brazilian attacking midfielders expect some exciting attacking threats across the width of the pitch.
Subs:
70th minute: De Arrascaeta on for Firmino
80th Minute: Kampl on for Lucas Moura

Guarin has the freedom to move forward in order to create that extra option. He needs to control play more by creating and forming the attacks. He should look to move forward to be the new option.
Our attacking midfielder will be Lallana who will look to run into space and finding the opportunity to change and dictate the game.
Bellarabi should stay further forward as most players will look to leave the ball for him in the next attack.

Geronimo Rulli is a very agile GK, can get around the area very quickly and close down strikers, his huge frame makes life difficult for the opposition, will release the ball early to the wide players.
Laporte man marks the CF and Chambers sits spare, these two and Zouma are the future so will look to put on a dominate display, Laporte wont give the CF any time to manouvre his way into goal by pushing him back wards, not physically but positionally he will force him back not allowing him the freedom of the final third, always watching him even if we are attacking. Chambers the spare man will take a step back and watch to see how things progress, will be there to help other defenders if they lose there man. Will attack all high balls and any big men that come up for set plays, he himself will go up for corners.
Kovacic and Bender are solid enough in the middle can both defend and attack, so defensively, without the ball Bender will look to pick up the AM and Kovacic the 2nd most attacking threat from nmidfiled, the two work perfectly together and on the same wavelength, onto there players very quickly and do not allow them to dictate play. and pressurise them into stupid passes as they panic, attacking ONE moves forward Witsel usually the other stays back, both can do it and have the energy to do so , so get up and support the forwards, awaiting any ball that comes out and shoot if possible, both hvae good shots., Look to bring the others into the game, with nice quick passing.
This is a chance for El Ghazi to show his worth, with Depay on the left the two want to showcase there talent, we put trust in our two young Dutch wingers this season as back up to the two main men, quick, skillfull and both with a very good eye for goal, love taking players on with pace. Play with no fear, take players on, if it doesnt work, track back and follow the players who has the ball, always fighting. Keep trying it will pay off. Take them on down the line with support from fullbacks, if they arent there quick one twos with Marchisio and drive into the box and take a pop at goal. Defend the lines in and get back and support the fullbacks when they have.
Marchisio is a free role, help out defensively and support |Morata as much as possible, look for the ball as much as possible, alot will go through him wether its a through ball to Morata and he drives on, or quick passes to the wingers freeing them up, or playing the ball down the line for them to chase. Always has his head up looking for that desicive ball. When defending thre will be one midfielder left for them, so get onto him quickly and dont allow him to start attacks from deep.
Morata has everything, cna hold it up, take players on with pace and a great eye for goal. Always on the last man pushing the Cbs back making them play a deep line, look to spin off his marker when Marchisio plays the through ball. if nothing on, look for the wingers driving in as well as Marchisio and look to lay it off for them. Even without the ball, look to split the Cbs or drag them out of position freeing up space for others.

Second Half:

Lucas Moura-------Firmino-----Felipe Anderson

Guarin has the freedom to move forward in order to create that extra option. He needs to control play more by creating and forming the attacks. He should look to move forward to be the new option.
Our attacking midfielder will be Lallana who will look to run into space and finding the opportunity to change and dictate the game.
Bellarabi should stay further forward as most players will look to leave the ball for him in the next attack.

Attack, support the wingers, get to there outside giving them an option, if you do recieve the ball , fire in crosses to the CF.
