Athletico and dortmund don't compete at the top, both Clubs have won one league in the last ten years haven't they? Just like us? Taking into account the fact these clubs don't have sugar daddy clubs popping up from nowhere to provide competition
---------------------------------------
Dortmund have won the league twice in the last 4 years. They did this just a few years after nearly going bust. Dortmund and Atletico have the formidable prsence of Bayern, Barca and Madrid to overcome and they did it. Thoseclubs are bigger challenges than Chelsea and City. We just hide behind tired excuses. Liverpool made the excuses look silly las season when they rose from 7th to ALMOST winning the title.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Man united have been in the top 3 most formidable teams in the world for a long long time. Just imagine this example.... the german league currently has bayern as easily the dominant team (man united) and dortmund as the team that occasionally wins something and challenges the dominant team (arsenal) all of a sudden a russian and arab take over lets say wolfsberg and leverkusen (city and chelsea) and spend a billion pounds on players instantly propelling them into the top four whilst competing for all the players dortmund would want to sign. Do you think Dortmund would stilll have won 2 leagues in last four years under these conditions?
You must have been in a coma when Benitez was trying to flog off Alonso in 2008, to replace him with Barry. Only for Alonso to have his best season after the move failed. We were heavily linked at the time and Wenger spoke about it. Public knowledge.
_____
Ah yes....and you sat with your big mouth at the table? You are sure on what wages Alonso is? You know for sure that we could afford the fee at that time.
Just fack off...
Chelsea have bought their share of trophies.
Sherif is talking out of his bum hole. It was clearly said back in 06 Arsenal wouldn't compete for some time. Instead of looking at short term why don't you look at the long term prospects? After all what is 9 years of "no success" compared to decades if stability?
So what your basically saying is we could of spent but it was a risk? So if we spent and didn't win anything or increase our stature meaning more revenue we could of been in trouble, so Wenger didn't spend because of a fear of failure?
Godlee.. the figures need to be interpreted properly for a start. having money in the bank is pointless if the club loses 30m+ every season, it won't last long. you need to have the revenues to sustain the spending.
-----
They have been by Swiss ramble where he clearly states we could have spent more money than we have, obviously if we spent and didn't finish inside the top four there could have been consequences but if your happy to back a manager that wants to avoid failure more than he wants success I guess each to their own.

This. Wenger has set us up for decades and decades. Teams dream of doing what we have done. Many times the owners of the likes of spurs liverpool everton etc have cited Arsenal as the perfect example of how to move up to the next level in terms of training ground and moving to an elite stadium. Spurs are just starting to do it now, ten years after we did it! Do you think during this time they will be able to finish top four every single year?
Ah yes....and you sat with your big mouth at the table? You are sure on what wages Alonso is? You know for sure that we could afford the fee at that time.
Just fack off...
------------------------------------------
Yes we could afford the fee and wages, seeing as our wage bill was bigger than Liverpool's at the time. And Wenger said nothing about the cost but aid some crap about "killing Denilson" if we buy Alonso. Any more excuses?

----------------------------------------------------
Really? When was that said? What does it mean to compete? So, looking into our financial figures and huge profits over the years, what did you see that ave you the impression we couldn't compete?
"I have been criticised for not hiring Xabi Alonso or Gareth Barry. But if I signed them, I would have killed Song, Diaby and Denilson,” he said
“I told the shareholders we have to trust this team. Everything is based on my own conviction," he said.
"If in two years I don't have any success, it will be my fault. It is a bet I made.”
----------------------------------------------------------------
Those were Wenger's exact comments in 2009 after he got a lot of stick. You would note nothing was said about lackng money. Infact, it suggests the shareholders wanted a change in transfer strategy but he went out of his way to convice them of his total faith in his young players. But yes, it's all because we had no money to spend.
if your happy to back a manager that wants to avoid failure more than he wants success I guess each to their own.

well that's the myth isn't it, that Wenger is content with mediocrity. The stadium move was a sign of the clubs ambitions and will take us to new heights, we had a long term vision and they saw it through to the end. We had a few difficult years against the massive spenders but in the end I'm happy we did it our way.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Back when we moved in to Emirates, something was said that Arsenal would have to sacrifice success for long term stability. Those profits were needed to pay of the stadium debts, signing long term sponsorship deals meant that by around 2010 Arsenal were left behind in revenue terms, as likes of Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool signed lucrative deals. So until the sponsorship deals with Nike ran out and the original ones with Emirates, Arsenal had to balance the books. Now Arsenal have the most lucrative sponsorship deal with Puma in English football history add to the fact that a new Emirates deal has been signed. All the while during the trophyless period...
Haha it's like talking to a brick wall, no matter what new information is presented that contradicts your initial stance you won't budge. If you can look at the financial reports and still dismiss them is there any point in a debate?
the delusion is strong in this one
Its not like we haven't challenged for trophies on the previous 8/9 years. We reach I think 3 cup finals (1CL and 2 CC) with a bit of luck we could easily have won the CL and the Cup game against Birmingham.
All it takes is abit of luck in finals as unfortunately we didn't get any.
Well done Sheriff and Godlee for talking common sense

He's blatently lying Godfather. The much more logical explanation is that he developed a fear of spending around the same time we moved into our £400m stadium. Through therapy and counselling he's managed to stop being scared of spending, conveniently at the same time we have loads of money to spend. How lucky is that
